Thanks for your advice. Worked wonders. I have successfully changed the pronunciation of tick and it now pronounces apostrophe. However I am not having the same success with bang. I want to replace it with exclamation. I have followed the same procedure as apostrophe but oddly no success.

NVDA doesn't have a restore defaults button in that dialog, but this
will work:
1. Find your user configuration directory. If you're using an installed
version of NVDA, Pressing Windows+r and typing %appdata%\nvda should put
you there.
2. Delete symbols-en.dic.
3. Restart NVDA.
