Re: Potential NVDA issue with Google Chrome

It sounds like typical Chrome inattention to accessibility.  They seem to break something every number of months.  I was recently upgraded to a version of Chrome in which the about page is not properly accessible.  I can't read a lot of the information.  This sounds like an expansion of the same sort of problem.  I really doubt that this is a screen-reader problem.

Subject: [nvda] Potential NVDA issue with Google Chrome

About the same time as I updated NVDA from 2015.4 to 2016.1, Google Chrome was updated from version 48 to 49.  I am now experiencing problems accessing the the Google Settings page and I’m struggling to determine if it’s a NVDA or Chrome problem.  Note in my NVDA Browse Mode settings, ‘Automatic Focus Mode for focus changes’ and ‘Automatic Focus Mode for Caret movement’ are both checked.   This is the problem:

Press the alt key, then press spacebar to open the Chrome menu, then press the s key to open the Google settings.

The page opens, NVDA makes the camera sound indicating Focus Mode and focus is in a settings search edit box.

Tab or arrow out of the edit box, NVDA does not make the Clang sound indicating Browse mode.

Press NVDA key+space to manually enter Browse mode

None of the browsing quick keys like h or d work even though I know these items exist on the page.

I’m leaning toward it being a Chrome issue rather than NVDA because standard web pages work fine.  When I used NVDA 2015.4 with Chrome 48 the Settings page was very accessible but things have drastically altered.  Is there anyone with version 48 of Chrome who can verify that Focus/Browse modes operate as designed and the Browser quick keys operate properly in the Google Settings page?

Cheers

Chris

Have you tried the site?  I have tried Grease Monkey and Kill Windowless Flash now and then.  I seem to recall that it doesn't work on this kind of player.  Some things are just plain inaccessible.  As I said, it's a vague memory and I may be wrong but my recollection of this kind of player is that it is just not accessible.

Ok, that's good.
Next, you need to install a mozilla addon called Grease monkey.

After that, you must install an addon called "kill windowless flash"

Your local station is using an inaccessible Flash control or
Flash player, I'm not sure just what.  I think they switched to
an inaccessible Flash player.  You might be able to get the site
to play using a physical mouse and the NVDA feature that
announces what is under the mouse as you move it but I don't know
if you can or not.  I don't recall ever being able to get Flash
to play from the keyboard when I've come across this kind of
inaccessible control.  However, you might want to play with other
browsers and screen-readers to see if any of them provide access.
Someone else may experiment and figure out a way to get access.
Or perhaps I'll find something but it doesn't look promising.

Re: Windows trouble

This is very speculative and you haven't even asked about other behaviors to try to isolate the problem.  Why do you attribute problems to complex causes like this without further investigation?  We don't know if other commands work such as n for skip links.  We don't know if web pages can be read properly.  We don't know if streams play properly.  There has not been any determination as to how fast a file downloads.

There is some problem but is it a screen-reader problem or a browser problem, or  as you speculate, a network problem?

It could be a conjested connection, in the afternoon my wireless gets

Restart all systems.
Could be a virus I guess.
Anyway ring your isp and ask for a account reset and service refresh
because of issues connecting to the net.
If this does does not work they will probably do a reformat on your
exchange point this shouldn't take that long.
Next, have another phone with you and either call them back or have them
call you, you want a linetest.
Usually there maybe a problem with a device, if it is a device, a filter
is usually an issue or its a failing cordless.
Next, they may ask for an isolation test.
pull out all phone jacks from the wall.
if they find an issue and its their problem ie up to your house but not
into it they will fix it free of charge usually.
If its inside it could cost you up to 120 bucks to get the call out.
If you often have issues like this, its usually 3 bucks a month, round
100 a year at least here in new zealand for wirepoint to point insurance.
This extends the coverage of the technitions from the street to your
actual internal jackpoints and wiring your devices are still your
problem but those repairs could include connecters like filters and
adaptors for phones.
With fibre there are different issues but we won't go there.
If you have a noise on your line it may need repairing to.
Get wifiinfoview from nirsoft and find a channel that works with 1
network on or 2 and just switch your wireless router to that, you may
need help with this.
Over that check you don't have any broken cables.
On the pc side as well as a full malware and virus scan, I'd run a disk
check and full defrag and clear all the junk files and stuff you don't
need starting.
But this is firmly a network issue as I have had many in  my time.
Most of them have been broken componants.
As well as this your isp may switch your exchange channel over and with
my bad line that did help a bit.

My portable copy of nvda just crashed or something. There was just suddenly no speech at all and I hit nvda q to do a restart and I got nothing so I hit ctrl alt n and that started my installed copy and all is good again. I've noticed that occasionally the portable version will do some odd things like not speaking as it should and not reading items in a list as I arrow up and down but if I start my installed copy it is normal again. I don't know if there's any kind of log for the portable version so if someone can tell me where that log might be and where to send it, I'd be glad to do so and maybe track down a problem.

Hi all,

I must clear something up. I do not advocate dumping one browser for another. Actually, I use IE 11, Firefox, and Google Chrome. Each browser is best for certain web sites and also what you use the browser for. For example, I like using the mobile Facebook site on IE 11 better than the other two browsers. However, when I play YouTube videos, I like Chrome much better, because the video never pauses or stops altogether. I use Firefox for my banking site. It is good to have two or three browsers, because a web site may act totally different in one browser than in another. On both of my computers running win10, Chrome loads most web pages at least 20 seconds faster than in Firefox and 30 seconds faster than IE 11. It could be my laptops and set up as well. My advise is to have as many tools at your disposal as possible so you can do as many jobs as you can. Take care, and have a great one.

Yes, if you want to spend an unreasonable amount to solve captchas.  Rumola is much much cheaper and Webvisum can still be used with earlier versions of NVDA.  If you put a portable version of Firefox on your machine that is version 43 or lower, you can still use Webvisum on sites that require captchas to be solved and you can use the current version of Firefox on all other sites.  It may be that for someone who solves many captchas, this might not be as good a solution but for many, it may be a reasonable one.

I keep seeing, David, your claim that Chrome is faster.  How many machines have you compared Fire fox with Chrome?  I doubt that there is any meaningful difference.  I like the Firefox interface more and Firefox has many more popular add ons.  I am very skeptical that dumping firefox is necessarily a good idea and without meaningful comparisons, I shall remain skeptical that there is a meaningful difference in speed.

I have Chrome on my computers because there are sites, now and then, where I get better access with it.  I use Firefox as my main browser.

And as far as streaming is concerned, the browser doesn't stream.  Whatever player is used streams.  I am, again, very skeptical that Chrome is any better at streaming.

I tried the page you mentioned in FireFox and Chrome and initially, there did seem to be a problem with the Chrome version in that it only seemed to be partially loaded.  I pressed Control+f5 and it appeared to fix the problem  This reloads the page from the web site rather than using f5 alone which reloads the page from memory.  Your English is much better than my Swedish but I tried the 'Lägg in annons' link which opened up a form which I was able to read and navigate the same way in both FireFox and Chrome.  .

I've only been using Chrome a few weeks, having become interested after listening to a tutorial by David Moore, a fellow list member.  David covers working with forms in Chrome, so it may by worth a listen.  There is a learning curve with any new piece of software and I have taken some time to put some notes together about navigating and setting up Chrome, which I can send you if you wish.

Hi, Let's take as an example. We have an very popular sight here in Sweden call www.blocket.se It is an sight were people are selling used thing. Like Cars, mobiles, coputers electronics, apartment, simply, you can find everything there.
We have a such of hate/love to that webbsight.
However when i tryed to add an adds, it was more or less impossible to do it with Crome. I must use firefox. And there seems to be problems with loading page.
OK. i agree on that, if you simply want to read on newssight, then it works  pritty well.
However it is not fair to say that Crome is working very well to people who  are new and wondering. OK. for you techgais that could be nice to play and workaround. But an mayourity of people just whant that things should work as expected. and you cant say that about Crome.

Hi,
The browser Google Chrome will work much better. I have found this out for myself on three computers. Chrome uses HTML 5 to the greatest extent, and streaming works much better. That is my thought. Have a great one.

I tried the liev stream and interacting with the Flash player, but browser crashed.
The web dev will have to revert to previous player or move away from Flash to HTML5 <video>.

Try contacting the local website by email.  They should have a

I'm about to pull out what's left of my hair out.  Could anyone
help me?
I can't figure out what our local ABC affiliate in Charlotte NC
did to
their flash settings.  the website is:
www.wsoctv.com
Find the heading link labeled watch live.  It used to play
straight away,
but as of yesterday it doesn't.There is a clickable imbeded
object.  I
went into focus mode and hit numbpad enter and nothing happens.
Thanks.
