Hi, Brian,

The other day I installed google chrome and I do want to learn it well. Yes, I agree that it doesn't hurt to learn something new in case internet explorer dies. I can understand why people like what's familiar but I also see your point.

I am not having much luck at using Edge and NVDA. Are there any tutorials regarding using NVDA with Microsoft Edge?
Thanks

A few weeks ago, I posted a query to this list and some others concerning solutions for this issue and got absolutely no response.

And that should be utterly unsurprising.  WebbIE is a one-man project about which very little is known to "the outside world."  Then you have the fact that it's built atop what was once the dominant, but is now a rapidly dying, web browser and the desire to delve into finding answers is simply absent.

For myself, and I am speaking strictly for myself, I am not going to dedicate my time to finding a solution to something that is rapidly hitting a dead end that no one can fix.  It makes no sense for me to spend my time that way and, in the final analysis, it makes no sense to spend your time (for any you) that way because it is a dead end.  Learning a new and currently popular browser is a far better use of time and effort.  Several browsers now have  a "reader view" (see Firefox Reader View page for the leader on this) feature that essentially do what WebbIE had been doing - stripping things to straight text.  Clutching antiquated software to your (for any you) bosom makes absolutely no sense over the long run.  That has nothing to do with whether you're sighted, blind, or anything else.  There are clear indications when the time to begin letting go is nigh and when that point is passed.

Hi Group,

I played with this WebIE (version 4--supposedly latest version) and while it does work somewhat, I have great wait times when accessing pages with large graphics or embedded audio.

A few weeks ago, I posted a query to this list and some others concerning solutions for this issue and got absolutely no response.

I agree, though, that it really amounts to throwing good effort after bad to pursue anything that has IE11 as its underlying web browsing technology these days.  While IE11 is still getting security updates it is under no further development.  Web coding conventions have changed enough since development stopped for that to already be a functional concern.  Now there's no screen reader maker I know of that's throwing a lot of focus on IE going forward since it's been supplanted in the marketplace by Chrome and Firefox and Microsoft is intent on making Edge its flagship web browser.  There's a lot more interest in keeping on top of these three browsers while IE is going to become more and more a stepchild and will eventually likely end up unsupported beyond what already exists (which is substantial, but still, the writing's on the wall).

Yes, Rosemarie,

the webbie browser is way out of date, and many features that are on web pages will not work with webbie, and many features in JAWS like aria will not work either. You are really limiting yourself using webbie over a current up to date browser like firefox or Chrome, or even Edge with NVDA.

Configuration now sorted

Hello Brian and Gene,

Thank you very much for your help. My laptop does have a physical numberpad, so with my wife's help I located the insert key, and after opening the configuration menu, soon changed the keyboard layout to laptop and the hotkey to Capslock. I then set my other preferences and saved my settings. All well now.

Best wishes,

You wouldn't be taken to a create a new account page if you were using a new device or browser.  You might be asked to authenticate the new device in some way or to sign in with your user information but being taken to a create a new account page indicates another problem.  I don't know if the problem is user error with Webbie, some sort of incompatibility, or one or more settings that need to be changed.

Yes, I think so.  I’ve seen this when I had a problem trying to sign in using another device that was mine. I should say a friend’s device while I was on vacation in my own state.  Canada When I got home I had to go into the e-mail on our IPhone to allow it. then the problem went away. I could not get my gmail in my inbox. When I allowed the IPhone to my gmail. The problem went away. Did you try signing into your gmail on another device? Or were you using your own computer?

Re: dropbox working

I got a ticket and was told to reply to it, but direct links work again and have continued to work.
As long as that does I won't have to handle dropbox directly.
As long as that simple function continues, dropbox and me will be fine.

I'd take issue with you on this. I have had replies back from several

issue. It is true to say as is often the case that they do not fully
understand the blind experience, and this has been shows by their badge
systems recently introduced, but in the main they do tend to fix things.

Well I am just happy direct links work.
Sadly its clear that they do not respond to users. because I just got
a standard automated responce saying use the self service options.
Or the forums and many had the same issues I had.
It seems to be fixed for now.
Dropbox is a good service as long as it works that is.
I swear it must be staffed by cybermen its the only explanation I can
think of.

Very strange indeed.
There has been several notices recently telling of upcoming changes, or
improvements as they prefer to call them. to me they are in grave danger
of driving away the simple user who does not wantbadges collaborations
sharing folders etc, and only ever uses it to keep several machines able
to see a core of files and use the public links on places like this to
help out other users.
The did a while ago say they would not support XP and logged everybody
out then without any kind of announcement we coould all log in again and
use it on Intel chipped machines running xp, but not amd ones, but since
they also told us how to stop the client updating as well, and the 13
version still works, then it seems one arm of their organisation is
working one way, while another is doibing something else and not
explaining what they are doing very well either.
They do need to be careful as there are other players out there still
offering public links to cloud stored files.

As far as I know, you will get such a notice even if you didn't sign
up. I got a notice last week. As far as I recall, I didn't elect to
get the newsletters. If you don't use public links, I don't know if you
will get such a notice but I have public links and I did.

Hi Gene If you sign up for Drop Box news letters. They send them to you.
I have’nt signed up. But friends who did sent me messages saying that
your public folder is going private as of March 15 next year.

The message I received only a few days ago said nothing about any other
subject than that public links would be dropped in March of next year.
I see no reason, since Drop Box is working again, and since nothing else
was mentioned, to believe that Drop Box is changing anything else.

Hi.
Hmmm maybe dropbox crashed, it appears that everything works now as I
expected.
Dropbox.com stopped working for a little but is now back.
If it was a failier then false alarm.
If it was dropbox responding to everyone ranting at them, then I can't
complain.
I just hope they don't mangle it all again because I wasn't happy
about it.
It seems that it works though as it should with direct downloads, as
long as that works I won't have to bother about their inaccessible
webpage which I can't seem to get things to work on.

Re: Configuration menu

Gene

Also, though it's very very unlikely, if you can't use the insert key for some reason, you can open the NVDA menu from the system tray by right clicking it.  Then open preferences as usual and proceed as usual.

Clive,

NVDA defaults (or always has in my experience) to desktop keyboard layout since the vast majority of laptops now have number pads as part of their keyboards.  As Gene has already noted, you will use Insert as the NVDA key until you change your keyboard layout to Laptop, after which it will by the Caps Lock that you're used to.

As Gene also noted, if the keyboard on your machine actually has a "hard" insert key you can use that.  Number Pad zero, when number lock is off, has been the "soft" insert key on every machine I've touched in years (though I'm certain that out there, somewhere, is a keyboard layout that doesn't use it).
