Well, what is the issue with espeak new generation. I have to say I do not
notice any  problems that cannot be sorted by a few dctionary  changes, but
that of course is in English.
I think they will be missing out on a lot of functionality if the version
of nvda is sleft old.Much better to report the issues in espeak on an nvda
ticket and get it fixed.

Having said that, just trying it quickly with a portable version of the old
nvda. 50 seems to work ok, but may have some issues that only show up in
some cases.

Thank you for that Brian,

that makes sense to me as a probable cause. Thank you, CJ.

Well sometimes this happens if the bit which is focussed  refreshes.
For example, when  I see items load into the system tray, but focus is on a desktop item, every time there is a new item in the tray, the desktop item is read again.
For example, when dropbox or google drive start it can take a while for their icon to appear in the tray, so if documents or computer is highlighted, it says it again each time the tray updates.
I notice it on windows 7 and ten, but do not have 8
On the other hand I do have a laptop running xp which when it shuts down has the falling tones of nvda twice.
The reason for that one eludes me.

So the answer for you is to discover why the desktop or whatever the item is, maybe the program window title, is refreshed more than once. some programs do this all the time, speed fan being a case in point. However not seen it on firefox  I've not tried the 64 bit version, but of course if the machine has toolbars and add ons in the browser its quite likely as each is initialised it repeats  much in  the same way as the  download library does if its open when a download is in progress.

Hello,

after my old Windows 7 Machine gave up the ghost I had the fortune to
have a spare laptop to hand running on Windows 8.1. This seems to work
quite well apart from when I select a programme, say either Firefox or
Thunderbird. I can access these programmes well enough but for reasons I
do not fully understand when selecting say Thunderbird it will repeat
Thunderbird 4 times before shutting up and allowing me to start using
the selected option. I assume that I have made an error when setting
this machine up and am at a loss as to what setting is causing this
repetition problem. If anybody has experienced similar problems along
similar lines to my experience could somebody please advise me how they
rectified this problem or what I have got wrong? Any suggestions and
advice would be most welcome. Thank you, regards, CJ.

Re: All in one laser printers that work with NVDA

Misty,

Might I ask you to reveal the make and model of the Laser Multi-Function Printer-Scanner-FAX that you can't use?  Having this sort of information is as valuable for knowing what to avoid, at least at a given point in time, as knowing what does work.

I've had good luck with Canon's products, but have never gone the laser route in their product line.

All in one laser printers that work with NVDA

MistyDBradley@gmail.com <mistydbradley@...>

Hi everyone,
I am currently looking for an all in one laser printer. I purchased a printer a few months ago, but it is not accessible and requires you to do everything through the LCD screen and the menus. Even the software to install it onto my computer is not accessible, so I cannot even use it with my computer. Does anyone know of an all in one laser printer that is accessible? I don't mind if I can't use the functions on the printer it's self, but as long as I can install it on my computer and use it that way, that would be great. I would like it also to be capable of wireless printing with my iPhone, but but it doesn't have to have that capability. I just need an accessible printer that will work with NVDA and that is a laser all in one that does both scanning and printing.
Thank you,

Misty Bradley

I have a Behringer sound box on usb as the only connected, but there is also the inbuilt motherboard driven surround device, and for some odd reason on the last update of nvda next, the behringer was changed to sound mapper, but although this should have resulted in it still working as the default was the behringer, it failed and shoved it through the mother board one instead. This last install it has left it alone and so it has worked.
This of course might also be a symptom of the original issue some have with corruption of the .ini file at times. it seems as if part of a default and part of the configured one can end up in the working file producing odd results at times.
I do not know if this is being done via python or C, but I suspect some data is left in a buffer some place that causes these weird happenings from time to time.

The ms sound mapper is the right card to be honest, its fine as long as you don't need to switch to another card or have a default sound card or something that card is usually the windows default one which is only a problem if things are not connected right.

microsoft sound mapper not behringer speakers as I had. Now of course
since I was not expecting this to occur, I had not looked at the ini
file to see if it had corrupted, but certainly the sound was cut off as
the new version launched leving me to restart the machiene as all sound
unknown to me was being sent out to the default windows device not the
one selected and used by me previously. weird or what? Needless to say,
a reboot of the computer put things back, but the tell tale in the first
run after the update showed the .ini file had the wrong sound device
selected. I think they will need to watch this as it really should not
change anything in the .ini file until its checked in windows what is
being used.

Hello,
it might have been the ini file, or the synthesizer crashed, in which
case
NVDA will be smart enough to use Espeak as fallback so as not to get the
user stranded in silence.
Kind regards,

Hello,

after my old Windows 7 Machine gave up the ghost I had the fortune to
have a spare laptop to hand running on Windows 8.1.

Re: Repetition.

I don't think that is what is being described.  Evidently, when a program opens, the name of the program is repeated a number of times before the program can be worked with.  My question, and noone may know, is if this makes any practical difference.  In other words, even if the name of the program weren't repeated a number of times, the program might still not be able to be worked with for the same period of time or about the same period even if this repetition didn't occur.

In other words, we don't know if this repetition occurs while the program is opening or after it has opened.

Well, what is the issue with espeak new generation. I have to say I do not notice any problems that cannot be sorted by a few dctionary changes, but that of course is in English.
I think they will be missing out on a lot of functionality if the version of nvda is sleft old.Much better to report the issues in espeak on an nvda ticket and get it fixed.

Having said that, just trying it quickly with a portable version of the old nvda. 50 seems to work ok, but may have some issues that only show up in some cases.

Re: about firefox 50 and compatibility with previous versions of nvda

Gene

She can try using the portable version and see if she has problems.  That means she can keep the installed version as it is and eveluate the portable version's performance with whatever version of NVDA she wishes.  If she is satisfied, she will probably be satisfied with the installed version.  Or she may wish to continue using the portable version.  I use the portable version because if a problem develops involving loss or corruption of files in Firefox, I can simply delete the copy of the portable version I'm running and copy a backup copy to where I want it.  I can have the backup copy kept current by replacing the backup version with a copy of the portable version I'm running from time to time.  In that way, I have the same version with the same settings, add ons, book marks, everything the same backed up and replacing a copy that has become defective is very easy and simple.

I've seen reports here about problems with certain versions of NVDA and Firefox.  I don't know how widespread those problems are.  It may be that some people have them and some don't.  If your friend is interested, someone on list is likely to have information about where to find it.  I didn't keep the information myself and it would probably be simpler if someone who already has it provides it.

Re: NVDA And Bluetooth Speaker

Thanks, I Have checked in the control panel, audio devices, the Realtek sound device is the default and I have disconnected the Bluetooth now.
The odd thing is that the system sounds and JAWS run through the laptop speakers as required, it is just NVDA that is speaking at the logon screen and not at the desktop although if I shut down, it starts speaking again on the shutdown screen.

I have had this before with a set of usb sets.
If the sound is not on the windows sound mapper nvda will not switch.
I have also had the thing where windows will just not switch back unless you switch it back to the internal card.
There are 2 ways to do this.
1. connect the device used, then switch via sounds in control panel the speakers back to where they need to be, in theory with the right drivers if you get the latest it should work but it doesn't always do that.
Next get a sightling to switch it back for you,.
The easiest way is to switch back to your default before you shut down.
I used to get quite anoyed when say my brother had the device set to his expensive headset and just didn't switch it back or muted the sound.
In some cases I could plug in a cheap crappy usb set and change it back, other times I had to search through his clutter, find and wear his expensive gear he has told me to never touch, and then change the sound back to where its supposed to be.
There used to be a program called quickmix that did this in the old windows but I am unsure if there is a program that you can save configs via hotkeys to switch to a certain card.
Ofcause it has happened that I need the computer and there are no sightlings in which case I need to regain the use by any means necessary.
This involves me putting my recovery disk in and doing a reformat to get the audio back so I can use the computer and after I install everything again I forget what I am doing.
Its a big issue with users when you use a public system and they take their stuff away or plug it in and leave it there.

It was talking through the Bluetooth speaker when switched on but if you turn that off, the sounds defaults back to the laptop for system sounds but NVDA doesn't default back to the laptop.
If this makes any sense, has anyone had any similar issues or is there a way to select the default sound card for NVDA?
