Downloading as I write. Thanks for the update! Yes the bug mentioned of errors when just-ejecting a USB was very annoying! Thanks for fixing!

Hi everyone,

I’m delighted to announce the immediate release of Resource Monitor version 17.02 (aka 5.0 in the old major.minor scheme). This version fixes a long-standing issue where NVDA may pop up an error dialog when checking disk usage (NVDA+Shift+3) on some systems (particularly those equipped with a card reader).

For those new to NVDA world: Resource Monitor is an add-on that allows you to obtain various info about your computer, including CPU load (how busy your computer’s processor is), how much memory your programs are using, space used on disks, battery status, and current version of Windows you are using. This add-on started out as a hobby project by Alex Hall (contributor to Applvis and a long-time friend of mine) a few years ago. In 2013, I adopted this add-on to let translators translate messages in this add-on, as well as added enhancements and fixes with help from others (in fact, this add-on is the first NVDA add-on I worked on; my first original add-on is Control Usage Assistant, and a final version of that ad-on (the version I’ll maintain) will be released sometime this year).

More info about this add-on can be found at:

http://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/resourceMonitor.en.html

Enjoy. More add-on releases to be announced in the next few days.

When I used window eyes it installed java access bridge. Do you know if that app works globally regardless of what screen reader I use? Thanks for any help.

It does and I seem to recall you need both the 32 bit and 64 bits. Luckily
I've not delved in that on this machine, but I think its part of the java
download but is not activated by default. There is a command I seem to
recall.
Sadly from my experience much Java coded stuff seems to have been made with
no attention to using the accessible api in Java so its often all very
pointless and disappointing on real world apps.

If you are just talking about the screen-reader and not the services such as access to described movies on the Serotech (spelling) and other programs and services you can get bundled with System Access or, I believe separately, Serotech works well as a screen-reader but it is far less powerful than NVDA.  the only reason I can see to use it, and I certainlyu wouldn't pay for it for this reason, is that it comes with a nice version of Dectalk to use with it.  There is no equivalent version of Dectalk to use with NVDA.  But I wouldn't buy System Access just for that.  If you want to see what it's like, you can sign up and try System Access to Go, which is the System Access screen-reader made available free so you can use it by running it from the web when at a computer with no screen-reader on it.  Or you can try a demo of System Access the installed screen-reader from Serotech.

Hi all,

I have a question out of curiosity. I was talking to a girl on the computer, and she said that she uses System Access from Serotek, and used to use NVDA. I looked up System Access, and see that it still costs $400.00. Do you guys know the difference, and is there any reason why one should buy System Access over having NVDA. How does it compare to JAWS if anyone knows. I have never talked to someone who uses System Access, and I was just curious. Thanks a lot, and hope this question is not off topic.

Don't do it. I can't think of any way in which System Access is superior to NVDA in functionality or compatibility. Certainly if there are any such ways, NVDA's price trumps them pretty soundly. Of course, I haven't used System Access in a couple years, and some may say I'm just disgruntled, like a pig with laryngitis, but that's my opinion anyway.

I've seen this sort of problem being discussed by sighted people also, so I have a suspicion that badly designed web forms do exist.
I tried to do a survey run by our NHS earlier in the week and it was impossible not due to the boxes and buttons not being accessible but because the headings for questions etc, were not being rendered at all or in the completely wrong place for the response items!

No its not that. It is I think that the address does not get sent either to the outward stream or gets mangled. I think its the former since its often possible to refresh it, but not always.
Also I've seen parts of pages missing and the rest be normal but this might be the ad blocker malfunctioning in some way and blocking content.

Yes its as though it gets behind somehow. You wait and after sometimes a minute or so, it catches up and then is OK for a bit. I was wondering if it might be the file indexing that is taking the time or is it doing anti virus or updates in the background and not saying anything about the extra load. It would be nice to have a background task to monitor the resource usage over a session and then be able to look at it later etc. I know one can do this graphically but that is not a lot of use to us. I feel its a windows 10 issue.

Does a portable version work? Can you run the exe file using explorer to get to the folder?

I have found issues where the desktop icons seem not to work but generally this seems to be on everything not just one item and was last time due to some odball network tool that was misbehaving and putting up a focussed invisible window over the desktop which only the mouse seemed to be able to click through.

The other thing that comes to mind is anti virus issues, but one would expect some kind of error in that case.
Are you saying a previous version would work OK?

Hi friends,

I Have a Microsoft Windows 10 64 bit laptop and it completely refuses to load the latest NVDA, does anyone have any ideas what the issue may be?
You can double clik the desktop icon after a fresh install and nothing at all happens.
I Have even tried running it as an administrator.
The issues seem to have started after I installed a Bluetooth speaker, an Anker but I have now uninstalled this from the device manager and allso in control panel, view devices and deleting it there.

Sometimes firefox completely losessome datafromweb pages, such as when you use the file hippo update checker.
A refresh or 2 or three usually fixes it.

I sometimes happen to encounter it, so I would usually repeat an action
so that it does not fail for the second time. If it is not working for
you, I activate the focus mode, then I tab to the desired link, and then
I press enter, so that I activate the link. If it is to no avail, I play
with different browsers. I also make sure whether a web page is
maximized, so that NVDA is successful in communicating with it.

The thing about Jarte is that to open docx files it needs the purchased
version as far as I know. OOpen and Libra Office seem to be able to load in
docx files, but as has been discussed here of late, the authors need to do
some more work to allow screenreaders to work on all parts of them like
read
all etc.

Of course it might be possible to find an old copy of an older version of
Office pro corporate which I did and it still worked aand accepted the key.
Legal? Well, its a grey area isn't it. if the original buyer is giving it
away, then who cares.

Subject: [nvda] accessible word processors with NVDA

Hi,

My computer's keyboard's been acting up, and I have my Mum's as a
backup, but it doesn't have Microsoft Office on it, and I was wondering
if there was a decent free word processor out there, accessible with
NVDA, that I could install on that computer instead. It would be nice if
it could read and edit .docx files, but I'm aware I can't have
everything.

The most used features in Word for me are:

The Spellchecker, including a whole dictionary of words I've added so
Pokémon names, anime characters' names and names I just made up don't
get flagged;

The word-counter;

Page-breaks;

Headings (mostly for aesthetic reasons).

If there's something out there that does all these things, and is free
and accessible, I'll be pretty happy with it.

I should note this issue occurs only with Internet explorer 11 and I tested with the exact search engine in Firefox the same search and NVDA behaved as I expected.  I landed on the link hit enter it opened.  This wasn’t the case when using Internet Explorer.  Again the search engine and search were the exact same.

However you turn it off, it will remain off if you save the settings or use the default setting of having NVDA save the settings on exit.  All settings changes done through NVDA short cut commands can be made permanent in the same way as when made in the menus and dialogs.  It's the same change however it's made.  Saving the settings will make it permanent in either case.
