Re: NVDA question regarding Mac Keyboard
Hector Elias <hmelias09@...>
Hello Everyone: Thank you for your responses. I am sorry that I was not more specific on my earlier post. I am running boot camp on a 2012 iMac, so I do not have the touch bar. When I press NVDA + 1 to enter "Input Help" I get the following message, "NVDA + Shift + right arrow moves the navigator object to the next object." On my Mac I use the FN key with the right arrow to perform the key stroke to simulate the "End" key. When I press just the FN + right arrow, when in input help, I get the message, "end". So I know that the latter key combination works. I wonder if it will only take certain keys at once. If so, besides using Sharp keys, is there another work around anyone knows of?

NVDA and the Nano text editor
James AUSTIN
Hi folks
Apologies as i have asked a similar question before. Does anyone on list use Nano, a UNIX command line text editor please? I am able to read and edit text with the arrow keys, but NVDA cannot see Nano's cursor when it is moved with Nano-specific commands. The same is also true for VIM --- another text editor. While I can use Notepadd ++ and other graphical text editors, I work a lot with the command line and would prefer to stay within it if at all possible. I think Travis has used Nano on here? Thanks Take care James

I forgot to add that on Mac laptop and Apple wireless keyboards, the FN key is on the bottom left row at the far left. On wired Apple keyboards, if I remember correctly the FN key is in place of the Insert key, at the far left of the block of six above the arrow keys. Take care James

On a Mac the Windows key is mapped to the Apple key which is in the place of the ALT key on a PC keyboard. As for the touch strip along the top of Mac laptop keyboards is usable with Voice Over, but at present the touch strip has not found its way to the desktop keyboard. For other Windows key bindings, there is I think an app called Sharp Keys. Take care James

I believe like a lot of things, its gone past its support date, which means yes, you can probably still use it but nobody is fixing bugs etc.

I've noticed that some older updates for no longer supported versions of Word have also been pulled down causing later versions of windows to report that lots of automatic updates failed with unable to download the update. It seems they have forgotten to tell 7 and up updaters not to keep trying to download removed office updates, which is a little bit messy in my view. Most of the ones I see are updates for powerpoint, word and Escel etc in Office 2002/3. Brian bglists@blueyonder.co.uk Sent via blueyonder. So if END is actually on the down arrow, you might need to press NVDA+SHIFT+FN+DOWN ARROW? As Sukil said, try it in Input Help mode (press NVDA+F1) and see what that reads out. That should confirm you have the correct keystroke, and also some keyboards may not let you press more than two or three keys at once. Finally, with the status bar, check that the program you are using actually has a status bar, as not all do. If the program you are in doesn't have a status bar, NVDA should still report "No status line found." Regards Quentin. No me neither likewise live mail and other more recent clients. What I find bad for me is having all the accounts in one long tree which can make it muddly and hard to figure out which folders are tied to which accounts for sorting and if you hide some then you tend to lose messages when you forgot you hid them and have rules sending email there which you forgot you had!

This is why using the bodged up Outlook express is what I'm doing. Outlook is like using a swiss army knife as screwdriver. it has far too much in it. 20 Euro is not a great amount for three installs on different machines. It of course still has the bugs OE always had like the preview pane can crash it through nvda, but who wants that preview pane in any case. It also seems to be handling the secure connections fine as well. Yesterday I had to reinstall it due to it losing the ability to remember passwords, but I took the opportunity to get archived many old emails and tweak some rules while I was at it, It kept the accounts OK though so I'm not complaining. It forced me to do some housekeeping. The one problem it seems to share with other old clients is that if Windows 10 decides to make a whole new build like the anniversary one it trashes it, so its best to back up all messages when you get wind of an impending mega update from Microsoft. I had a look at the weird client in 10, but its a tonka toy really. Brian bglists@blueyonder.co.uk Sent via blueyonder. NVDA question regarding Mac Keyboard
Hector Elias <hmelias09@...>
Hello:
I am new to NVDA, and I am using Windows 10 on a MAC using Boot Camp. I am using the bluetooth keyboard, which doesn't have a numbpad. When I am using the keyboard command NVDA+Shift+End to read the status line; it doesn't work. Does anyone know if there is a specific issue with a MAC keyboard? I tried it on my XPS13 and it worked; however, that keyboard actually has a "END" key. Or is it something to do with a setting I am not aware of? Any input is appreciated. Thanks, Hector

Its thunderbird's answer to a callendar, I have not used it, I don't want it and its not accessible but to be honest with it off performance went up.

I only use thunderbird as a traditional email client, its about all I use it for I know I am not using its entire power or featureset but so what.

Hmmm well its about all we have that works to be honest.

windows mail is another choice. live mail 2009 is another choice. Eudora 7.1 is good but you need to enter certifficates all the time but its ok for non ssl systems I guess. The bat and pegisus mail come to mind unsure about status. Thunderbird without lightning is fine. The only difference between thunderbird and more traditional mail apps is that while it does have menus similar to a desktop app, like skype its basically a web app using the firefox engine which is using the chrome engine. It can run different clients fron irc to mail to rss to news so I guess we could call it a net shell to be technical. I am not sure if traditional mail programs exist, with the event of tablets and other things, short of going to a universal app, a web app or web shell like this is probably a good transition. Its not perfect, but just like nvda it and its browser companian firefox, see monkey, and the mozilla brouser and mail client before it is modular. Its what attracts me to the system.

Re: Facebook

I tried m.facebook.com and it didn’t work on my computer. I am using
Windows 8.1.
I do not understand while so many blinds use www.facebook.com just use m.facebook.com and
there is no problem at all!
I've asked for a good tutorial on using Facebook with
NVDA but so far, no luck. All anyone says is that Facebook changes their
web page interface so radically and so often, that it just isn't possible to use
except for Smart Phone app
versions.

NVDA and Vario ultra
Simon Jaeger
I recently started trying to use my Vario Ultra display a bit more. I noticed right away that it pretty much completely fails as a keyboard using NVDA. I can't use Braille navigation commands, quick navigation keys in browse mode, and last but certainly not least, I can't seem to backspace when writing. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this and knows of steps I can take to make it easier to use as more than just an output display.
Also, this may be unrelated, but I noticed that when reading a book in something like QRead, my display cuts off its Braille lines at the end of a print line. So if a paragraph just happens not to fit on one line, it gets split up in multiple places and causes me to have to scroll the display quite a lot. Is there anything I can do about this? The "read by paragraph" option seems like it should fix the problem, but in this particular case, it doesn't. The lines within paragraphs aren't separated by actual line breaks or anything, and that is pretty much the extent of my troubleshooting skills. Thoughts would be much appreciated.

Re: Reading Endnotes
Quentin Christensen
I'm sure it could be possible to write an add-on to do this - I'm not aware of one currently. The other option would be a macro to move the footnote text back into the main document, which would be an option if you want to read through a document, but probably not so much if you want to read in the middle of editing.

My understanding of Kelby's request was wanting to have the text of the footnote read out while reading a document using Say All - I could be way off of course!
