Hello, How do I enter a space and a backspace when using the VarioUltra and NVDA? Is there a list of commands for braille displays? Thanks.

Hi, it happens the same when I work with word documents. NVDA doesn't responde as fast as in other aplications, thunderbird or firefox for example. Any advise will be apreciated.
Best regards.

Open NVDA menu, then go to the preferences menu. Arrow up until
you find the Document formatting menu. Click enter on it. Tab
until you find "Clickable", which is checked by default. Uncheck
it so that it comes silent.

navigate facebook with nvda. I can click on
any of the surrounding information, but can’t
seem to get into the newsfeed and have it
read. Specifically, how do I get into the
newsfeed and then how do you get it to read?
Thanks for any help.

Let me join the Facebook thread.
Hi friends,
I have recently discovered that Google Chrome as a browser makes
it possible for us to do the live streaming on facebook. I have
checked IE, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Avast Safe Zone Browser,
but to no avail. The link Live Video, it seems, is not recognized
by them.
I hope this means something to you.

I've asked for a good
tutorial on using Facebook with NVDA but so far,
no luck. All anyone says is that Facebook
changes their web page interface so radically
and so often, that it just isn't possible to use
except for Smart Phone app versions.

Re: A Couple More Word Quesions
Hi Kelby,
But to answer your questions:
Moving quickly to misspelt words can be done with alt+f7. This jumps to the next misspelt word and automatically opens the context menu which contains alternative words. The issue with this is that you don't automatically see what the misspelt word itself is. If you press escape you can close the context menu and the focus goes back to the document with the focus on the misspelt word so you can read the text around the word.
Right clicking on a word is most easily done by simply moving the focus to the word and pressing the applications key. This works exactly the same as right clicking on the word and you can see either alternative words if Word thinks it's misspelt, or synonyms otherwise. You can close task panes - some task panes have their own keystroke - for instance, press control+alt+shift+s to open the styles task pane, and close it using the same keystroke. For most though, ensure the focus is on the task pane, press control+spacebar and choose close (press C).
Note that you can also use SHIFT+F6 to move through open panes and sections of the window in reverse order.
Regards Quentin.

1. Is there any way to quickly move to misspelled words in the
document by quick keys or does one have to use f7 to go to the
toolbar? (This is another thing NVDA might not do that JAWS can.)
Also, how do you route the mouse to a specific word so that you can
right clock on the word to see i.e. the thesaurus? I've tried this
with object navigation but I'm not getting anything?
2. Is there a way to get rid of the editing/proofing toolbar when
you're done with it so you don't have to push f6 so many times when
moving between panes?

Re: NVDA and the Nano text editor
Well to be honest I am waiting for the orbit, the braigo or the invision displays or other new tech units to make it here. I don't mind paying 600 bucks for a simple device to read the screen with, but till one comes out well. The orbit seems likely, a lot of people worked with this including people here in nz so it should be interesting.

I don't have a Braille display at present, which may be where the problem lies.
I am able to navigate with the arrow keys up and down and letter by letter. However, when I use one of Nano's navigation commands or another nano command, NVDA loses track of the cursor or else cannot read the screen say in the file browser for instance
Thanks for any help/advice

Yep, use nano all the time. I don't have any issues using it, but then again, I've been using linux since somewhere around 1992-93 timeframe, so I'm used to it, and don't have problems moving around the screen using it. There's always the control-L command if your cursor is completely lost, and you can't find it (doesn't happen often, but it does happen, much less now that dialup is gone), what specifically are you having trouble with? give me steps to replicate, and I'll find a solution for you.

Hi folks
Apologies as i have asked a similar question before. Does anyone on list use Nano, a UNIX command line text editor please? I am able to read and edit text with the arrow keys, but NVDA cannot see Nano's cursor when it is moved with Nano-specific commands. The same is also true for VIM --- another text editor.
While I can use Notepadd ++ and other graphical text editors, I work a lot with the command line and would prefer to stay within it if at all possible.
I think Travis has used Nano on here?
Thanks
Take care

I do not use MS Office, but are the endnotes at the end of the document, or at the end of each chapter?
If the former, might it be possible to find the first reference in the text, move to the first note and highlight them all Once highlighted you could try copying them to a new document. This should let you read them. A little cumbersome, if it works, but this is what I did on the Mac using Nisus Writer Pro.

Ah, I see. Maybe it's just JAWS that does that, then; or perhaps it's footnotes I'm thinking of. In either case, I know if you just save a Word Document with footnotes or endnotes in plain text it converts the way you describe.

Sorry, I jumped ahead of myself - I was initially thinking, NVDA identifies that there is a footnote / endnote, but doesn't read the text of the notes themselves, you would need to go to the notes section to read the note text. What I was then thinking was if there was an easy way to convert the notes into inline text, you could do that - and then either close without saving or undo etc if you didn't want to keep the notes inline.

Quentin,
I think you misunderstood what I was asking. I don't actually need to convert the endnotes into regular text, I'm just wondering if NVDA can/will read them when just doing a say-all in the document. I seem to remember it doing so but now it isn't; I could be confusing it with JAWS. (Since switching to my new laptop the combination of JAWS and Word has become completely unworkable, for reasons that remain mysterious to me and that Freedom Scientific has been totally inept at fixing as per usual.)
On 2/5/17, Quentin Christensen <quentin@nvaccess.org> wrote:
Hi Kelby,
Interesting question. I've never tried this so just went and had a quick look. It seems that you can do it manually, with a VB script or an add-in
tool. I found a couple of different sites, but this one lists the three main methods all on one page: https://www.extendoffice.com/documents/word/1192-word- convert-endnotes-to-plain-text.html
The only thing I think is that this leaves the notes at the end of the document as regular text (so you could easily copy to plain text or another
format which may not support Word's footnotes). I suspect what you were after was something that put the footnotes in the middle of the text where
the reference was?
One thing you could do, is to create a macro to do it. On the view menu (alt+w) is a macro option (m). From here you can record a macro, which once started, will "record" every keystroke you press until you turn recording off. While recording, you can move to the next footnote (alt+s,
o, n) then jump to the notes area (alt+s, h) select and copy the note, move
back to the main text, and paste the text from the footnote, perhaps in brackets.
Although I don't have an immediate need for it personally, I'll be interested to see if anyone else comes up with a good solution to this.
Kind regards
Quentin.
