Re: new to windows, need help with software selections
To be honest if you don't mind the 40 dollar pricetag, goldwave as well as a sound editor has a really good cd wripper using the freecddb.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
If you have been a nero user, then this is good. The only reason I'd ever use something like cdex is that like itunes its got gracenote intergration which has a slightly better and bigger following than freecddb. Saying that freecddb aint far behind gracenote, and as long its not that obscure even though you can get multiple disk titles for one disk its still good. The advantage that gracenote may have is that its payed for library and its in a lot of things from itunes to whatever. Those with a supporting product are able to easily make their own list and automatically import it to gracenote directly. The advantage of freecddb is that along with searching, you could download the entire thing over a gb or so to your system though I see no advantage in doing that. Its also easy to search and free, though its worth saying there is nothing background like, there are progress windows and the such while things are gotten if you don't care for that gracenote is your friend. Thats about the only difference and for most stuff things work fine.

I still run into situations where I'm glad to have
a Jaws demo on my machine. Just make sure it doesn't start automatically with
Windows, create a shortcut to the executable, and it can be run for 40 minutes
when needed without having to start Windows if you haven't already run it during
the current session.
If you want to check for updates to Jaws without
running Jaws itself, inside the Jaws folder in Program Files, look for a file
called FSAutoUpdate.exe. When activated, it will automatically check for
updates. To keep this on target, it's completely accessible with
NVDA.

way using NVDA. NVDA sees nothing in Avast unless self-protection is
turned off. What I've heard about this in the past is that the NVDA
developers allowed JAWS to see information from the program but not not
NVDA. This is, evidently, something that must be done one screen-reader at
a time. Also, it's a good idea to have a JAWS demo on the machine as
an alternative in case you run into a situation where NVDA doesn't work with
something or not well and you want to try another screen-reader.

The problem is that the CDex developers can do absolutely nothing about it, because the installer is created by a third party developer. I have managed to get NVDA to uncheck those options in the past, but I now don't remember how. Something about golden cursor and simulated mouse movement. Also, while we're on the subject, did you ever try switching to object review and doing an NVDA+enter on the uninstall button? No point installing a whole JAWS demo if you can make it work another way. If you route the mouse with mouse tracking enabled, and you don't hear the name of the button spoken, it is possible that NVDA doesn't actually know where the button is. This can sometimes happen if you're using object navigation keystrokes but you're in screen review mode, for instance. It looks like Dropbox has decided that my link to a piece of free software is in fact a violation of copyright law. Fantastic logical deduction. I put UTorrent 3.2.1 in an encrypted zip file. I have been using ublock origin for the last 3 years and have no plans to switch at the current time its previded me with no issue at all and is loads better than addblock+. It also helps that while not really needed ublock is the only 1 of the various security addons that made it over to thunderbird I don't know what I achieve with it on but I just installed it for no reason what so ever. Hi, A lot of people have said NVDA's touch mode is far from perfect at this point. I have never tried it and don't own a machine with a touchscreen. However, you are correct in assuming that Windows tablets typically have the same processor and versions of Windows. Just watch out for the ones running Windows RT, as that is completely different and will only run universal apps. Anything else is fine.
As for Windows vs. Linux vs. Mac OS, I personally think the whole
idea of attacking one operating system is idiotic. Everyone has
their problems with various ones. Each OS has things it does well,
and things it doesn't. I personally feel extremely efficient and
productive on a Windows machine, and I always get a bit ruffled
when someone tells me I could be working so much more efficiently
in something I've already decided is less so. I love tinkering
with things and Linux is great for that, but the machine I tinker
with needs to be separate from the one I use for school, work,
communication, research, social networking, etc. It sounds like
Linux GUI accessibility is great in some areas and shotty in
others, and some people are willing to overlook the problems
because of the open source aspect of Linux. Either way, it's glad
to see a list where that doesn't happen constantly.

in the preinstallation dialogs so I went through them up to the point where
other programs were offered. To the credit of the CDEX designers, you are
clearly told that other programs will be installed, though not in that
language. The installer doesn't try to sneak the other programs by without
you noticing as is often the case unless you are very carefull about
reading all installation dialogs thoroughly. But whatever means are
offered to opt out are not seen by screen-readers. I saw on the page where
you download the program that a portable version is offered. The portable,
version, according to a comment I've seen on another list, doesn't include any
potentially unwanted programs. Therefore, those wanting to use the newest
version of CDEX may try the portable version.

which u block are you folks using
mcLeod stinnett
--
from mack read from the faq, FAQ uBlock vs. uBlock Origin: what's the difference? Citing frustration with the increasing volume of support and feature requests from users of uBlock, gorhill (the original developer behind uBlock) transferred ownership of the project to the current uBlock development team, composed of contributors to the original project. Chris Aljoudi is now the lead developer of uBlock. Alex Vallat heads Firefox development, bringing uBlock to hundreds of thousands of Mozilla fans. After transferring ownership of the uBlock project, gorhill forked uBlock into uBlock Origin, a personal fork for which he's been releasing builds and providing support via the extension's Chrome Web Store entry. After the transfer, there were some issues regarding wording and attribution. After consulting with gorhill, this was promptly addressed and resolved — gorhill and the team are content and satisfied with the resolution. Even though there were no malicious intents or actual conflicts within the team, various aggressive false rumors and accusations were being spread. Some of those are: •gorhill was forced to give up uBlock for legal reasons. •uBlock was "bought" from gorhill. •uBlock is attempting to monetize. •uBlock is an illegitimate "clone" of uBlock Origin. ... and various others. The accusations have no basis in truth, and probably rather the result of some form of the "telephone"/Chinese whispers game. It's been openly discussed and offered to transfer uBlock back to gorhill; he has declined the offer. Which one am I using? Should I switch to the other one? You can tell by looking at the uBlock icon: ublock icon You're welcome and should feel free to use either per your own judgment. If you're currently using uBlock Origin, you're welcome to move over to the main uBlock project. Please note that the uBlock development team only supports uBlock, not uBlock Origin. Thus, uBlock Origin-specific issues are under gorhill's control. back to uBlock Home -- from mack

Yeah but if they are that old then I agree.
I was working with ccleaner and a few apps, suddenly I get messages after updating windows that they will not work because they are to old. If you are still using that program from 1995 then you may have to upgrade it sooner or later and that may be the time to look for an alternit. In addition I use privacy badger which is supposed to manage sites that care about you though who knows how that works, and https everywhere which has been touted as privacy but I do think is vary good for being secure. It does look like every site that should be legal moving to a more secured certificate approach anyway thats what all the new upgrades are doing anyway. Its short of a vpn or something more invasive and its not going to stop me if something gets through my week msse but it makes it a bit harder. To be honest my view is that if its getting through your firewall or antivirus or malware scanner or it even needs to get you notified about the potential thing, its allready to late. You may be ok but they have your ip and therefore location. We really should be focusing on keeping things from getting to the security software notification level, all the extras I have allow for more user control and some of them just work its not everyone's cup of tea, ie noscript does need you to allow sites from time to time when you know they are safe however as well as security its good as I said if you get a link you would usually have issue downloading, ie an audio or video file. If its not able to be gotten easily you can forbid the site from loading wen you click the link. The file comes up as forbidden. But now its there you can do file opps on it, and the file is yours.
