Re: nvda announcing clipboard functions and other keystrokes
Do you have any plans to develop any addon like you describe?

When ever i do a copy and pastei always use a extra step which is using the nvda key + letter C and it will tell me if there is text there or not.
My self i do not need to know or hear it say copy or paste. it is just a matter of when i do do a copy i put in that extra step.
The same idea if you use the nvda key + f9 key to start a mark and then the nvda key + f10 to say it has been copied i can confirm with the extra step if needed.

I used that add-on for a short while. The problem I found was that it wasn't reliable. There is an addon which makes these announcements available.
It is called Fake Clipboard announce or something like that.
You should able to find it on the addons repositary.

Hi, I have to figure this out and don't have an nvda machine to poke around on. It never used to bother me that NVDA doesn't announce cut, copy, paste, in particular, and other functions accessible using windows standard keys, but I've got a friend who is a new user of NVDA and he needs some more feedback from keystrokes, particularly these clipboard functions. Is there a setting to enable speaking for these keys, or do I need to install an add-on for this?

Re: Questions and suggestions
That isn't the reason and that argument is
irrelevant. The system tray wasn't accessible years ago through
Windows. There needed to be a screen-reader dialog to provide
access. That's how the whole separate access got started and System Access
uses the same command. Window-eyes uses a different command but it too
provides a system tray dialog.
There are times, like it or not, when the dialog
works better than using the Windows access method and it should be provided as a
part of screen-readers.
Sometimes, I get access to something using the
Windows method when the dialog doesn't work properly and at other times, I have
found the only way I've gotten access to an item is by using the dialog.
These instances where one or the other method doesn't work are rare but the
argument that the screen-reader dialog method is nothing but duplication is not
correct.

Because NVDA is not jaws, and there's no reason to make it mirror jaws
keystrokes. The windows-b keystroke will work no matter what you use for a
screen reader, since it's a windows command. That's why NVDA uses
it. There is no dedicated NVDA keystroke for this function.

to memorise all of them. But at least they’re there!
The only problem I have with Windows shortcuts being
linked to them is that, because they are global throughout the whole system,
it can unfortunately cause conflicts with other running applications that
utilise those shortcuts. For instance, I could assign a ctrl+alt+q shortcut to
launch QWS (a MIDI sequencer), and another application may use ctrl+alt+q to
mean quit. I have known ctrl+alt+o for options, ctrl+alt+x for exit,
ctrl+alt+n/p for next/previous, all of which can be assigned to a Windows
hotkey, and then it’s touch and go as to which item activates. Otherwise, I’m
definitely all for hotkeys!
As an aside, I must admit I do find it odd, and
mildly frustrating that there are four modifier keys that can be used to
register hotkeys and yet it is still possible to run out of logical keys! This
is even more so for global shortcut-linked ones, since I think you can only
have ctrl+alt and ctrl+shift combos. Possibly if you’re extremely dextrous you
might be able to have ctrl+shift+alt, I haven’t dared to try that one.
Lol.
First letter navigation. Now you mention it I am
aware of it. I use it all the time to move quickly to files in Explorer. But
for some reason it didn’t cross my mind for the desktop (even though I know
that is also controlled by explorer). I guess because my explorer is in detail
view, and the desktop shows as a sort of grid layout I treated them as two
separate systems. Strange how brains work!

Arlene,
MathPlayer by Design Science is a tool which lets you read and write mathematical equations in Microsoft Office and on the web: https://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathplayer/ Note that for some features, you also need MathType from the same site (MathPlayer is free, MathType costs $97 ($57 academic).
Kind regards

hi. for speaking menus also try for example: insert+p for preferences. i mean its shortcut directly like preferences which i mentioned. and for blank lines, if i read line by line, i also counter many blanks line in gmail, firefox or maybe other programs. use insert+a for using say all in laptop keyboard and insert+down for desktop. hope that helps and God bless you all.

Hi Sam
if you do a say all use the nvda key + down arrow key it will read the whole
message and you will not hear blank lines where they are. you only hear them
if you do it a line at a time by using the down arrow key each time.
I find it useful hearing them when writing up stuff.
The command was for a desk top pc.
the second question that you asked if NVDA is talking when you bring up the
preferences menu, just use the down arrow key and it will speak the first item on the menu and where ever you go to in the menus with the arrow keys.
Or is it some thing else like nvda not speaking at all on the pc?

Folks,
Several weeks ago, my NVDA (version 16.4) was unable to access Firefox (51.?). When I opened a webpage, the arrow keys just said unknown when I used them. I uninstalled NVDA and Firefox and re-installed both. I am now on NVDA 17.1), and I have the same issue.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: NVDA Web Browser Problem
hi. i was not familiar with mathplayer. but many months ago, i had this problem because of uninstalling one office program. i reinstalled office as the people in the list recommended me and the problem is solved. i had this problem only with firefox, not internet explorer.

Hi Arlene,
WINDOWS+B is a Windows command itself, not an NVDA command.
If you open the taskbar settings (easiest way is to open the start menu and start typing "taskbar"), then "Select which icons appear on the taskbar", make sure that "always show all icons in the notification area" is checked then it will ensure that you don't need to look in the notification overflow area to find some.
I think providing access to all notification tray icons even without that setting is the main extra thing that the Jaws setting does?
That being the case, we didn't want to use up a command to duplicate something which could already be achieved with an existing command. As for why Windows chose WINDOWS+B to get to the notification area, I have never figured that out.
Kind regards
Quentin.

Hi Gene,
Hotkeys are indeed excellent. One of the first thing I look for in a program is hotkeys. In fact, some have so many that it’s hard to memorise all of them. But at least they’re there!
The only problem I have with Windows shortcuts being linked to them is that, because they are global throughout the whole system, it can unfortunately cause conflicts with other running applications that utilise those shortcuts. For instance, I could assign a ctrl+alt+q shortcut to launch QWS (a MIDI sequencer), and another application may use ctrl+alt+q to mean quit. I have known ctrl+alt+o for options, ctrl+alt+x for exit, ctrl+alt+n/p for next/previous, all of which can be assigned to a Windows hotkey, and then it’s touch and go as to which item activates. As an aside, I must admit I do find it odd, and mildly frustrating that there are four modifier keys that can be used to register hotkeys and yet it is still possible to run out of logical keys! This is even more so for global shortcut-linked ones, since I think you can only have ctrl+alt and ctrl+shift combos. Possibly if you’re extremely dextrous you might be ctrl+able to have ctrl+shift+alt, I haven’t dared to try that one. Lol.
First letter navigation. Now you mention it I am aware of it. I use it all the time to move quickly to files in Explorer. But for some reason it didn’t cross my mind for the desktop (even though I know that is also controlled by explorer). I guess because my explorer is in detail view, and the desktop shows as a sort of grid layout I treated them as two separate systems. Strange how brains work!
Cheers. Damien.
