Re: the list

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

In my experience several things go wrong. Firstly, the server you post through can get on a black list or the place youu are, like virgin or bloggs.com can be seen as unreachable. also inactivity by you can be seen to mean you are not using it. In all cases some list servers drop your account. I don't know about this one, but certainly I've had this happen on yahoo and freelists in the past.

Ok, thanks.

I hope the moderators are seeing this because I did not unsubscribe from
the list but the server lost my subscription. Seems strange to me that
this would happen.

Hi,

Is this the correct list for NVDA stuff? I thought it was but earlier I
tried to post a question and got an error saying the server wasn't
configured correctly. It said the reason was because my email address
wasn't known on the server.

I have since rejoined and it look like it is working again.

Thanks.

Re: accessible antivirus

Hi!
I use Emsisoft Antimalware. It's fast, scans for potentially unwanted programs (such as adware) in addition to general malware like trojans and worms, and has, to my mind, the best behavior analysis around, spotting backdoors from how they behave even if the file itself is unknown, to provide just one example. This goes far beyond what is usually referred to as detection by heuristics. Accessibility-wise most things I need are in the tab order but I find myself resorting to flat review sometimes.
Greetings,

It did not happen with the previous Chrome versions. I have used the latest update since its release. I have detected the problem on the given pages. I do not use other pages with flash contents. The only thing I know is that it has never happened before. It is yesterday that I encountered it. But, what is interesting about all is that when I use the arrows, I can find the embedded object area. It will not work for me only when I try to get it by O, or shift plus O.

I'm sorry, when I replied, I thought someone else had sent these comments.  I think my e-mail program may have gotten behind and read the wrong name.  That information is important and completely changes what we can infer.  Please include details even if you don't know if they are important when reporting problems.  Everything you reported in your last message was important.  As I said, this seems very likely perhaps definitely to be a Chrome problem.  I hhope it has been reported.  You may want to report it as well.  we'll see if we get any indications that others have already done so.

I almost never use Chrome and it isn't current on my Windows 7 machine.  I can let it update and test it later tonight on that machine if you don't get definite answers before then.  I can check the site later after I let Chrome update.  But I can't switch machines now.  I was able to see an embedded object when I used my older version of Chrome on my XP machine.  I think this is a problem introduced in Chrome.  My older version of Chrome is still new enough that it should have played an HTML5 stream if it were available.  Let's try to be more certain.  Try going to the first link you gave and, starting from the top of the page, look for button the pag3e.  Do you see anything like a play button and other buttons you might see in a player?  If so, then the new Chrome is using an HTML stream.

Hi,
<snip I am a big fan of comic books and graphic novels, but can't read them easily because of a cognitive impairment.
PL] A screen reader is the wrong tool for the job. Graphic novels and comics have images that need to be described in context therefore even current image description solutions will fail because they do not retain context. Optical character recognition will not get you anywhere either because there is not much text. A better option is to consider places such as comicsempower.com who produce comics and graphic novels in accessible form. They incorporate image descriptions in the flow of the narrative.

Hi,

I have not seen all messages on this thread therefore what I ask may have already been covered. In what situation do you need to read text? If you are fatigued when reading long documents then a solution like text aloud may work better. If however, you need to navigate the computer by using speech, then NVDA is the way to go.

Depending on what you want read, and how much trouble it is for you, you
could use my clipboard reading program at:

http://www.softcon.com/files/clipspeak.exe

You simply run it, and it will read anything that has been copied to the
clipboard, then it exits. No fuss, no mess.

It's not designed to do anything else, so if you're not up to copying
text to the clipboard all the time, then it won't work for your
purposes, but if that's all you need, it works quite well.

Hello group,

I am trying to decide between using Windows Narrator, NVDA,
JAWS, or possibly other programs.

Although NVDA is free and is supposed to be good, I'm not
sure it is the right program for me. Let me explain.

There are several people using this family computer, and I
don't want an intrusive program that will take over Windows,
and run in the background and bother them.

We all use the same log in, and I don't want people to have
to log on and off as different users. I myself don't even
want to use this type of software all the time when I use
the computer.

I personally just want a program that I can turn on and off
whenever I want to read out loud a specific piece of text
at any given time.

Windows Narrator is pretty easy to turn on and off, but its
extremely difficult to control what it reads out loud, it
just starts spewing without end whatever is on the screen.

I also don't know how the voice sounds in NVDA, but I don't
want something too robotic sounding.

So based on that I just want to use this program in a limited
way, is NVDA right for me?

Re: Is NVDA right for me?

Fantasy Sports <fantasylife@...>

I've not heard of Windows Eyes, but I have Windows
Narrator.

The problem with Narrator is it just never stops
talking, and you can't control what it reads.

For instance, I copied and pasted your email into
Narrator, and and first it doesn't read it, but
later it just reads it over and over without
stopping :)

If anyone can explain Narrator to me, that might
suffice for my needs, if I could ever get it to
work efficiently.

If not, I will probably give NVDA a try a pay
for the voice.

As a long time user of Window Eyes I have found that NVDA with the
Access32 voice is very comparable to Window Eyes. With the uncertainty
of Window Eyes being a long term product, I would highly recommend NVDA.

I would give it a try. When you install it, you have the option of
having nvda always start when the computer starts or not. If you uncheck
this, nvda won't run unless you send the command of ctrl, alt, and N
keys. That will start it and it will speak. When you're done, just hit
the NVDA key (numpad insert plus Q and it will ask if you want to quit
nvda. just hit enter and it will be gone until you want to use it again.

I am a big fan of comic books and graphic novels,
but can't read them easily because of a cognitive
impairment.

I understand there are programs that can pull
the text out of PDF and JPEGS, so you can read
them with a voice program.

NVDA also has an OCR add-on, I understand.

However, I'm not sure how effective this might
be with different comic books and graphic novels.

Does anyone have any advice about this?

I have the sappy5 version of eloquence and I don’t notice this when using nvda.

%The problem has already been described as a slow start of Eloquence on boot up.  No recording is useful unless there are other problems that haven't been described and that can't be adequately described in words.  Unresponsiveness can easily be described in words as well.

If your having problems with the code factory eloquence I would contact them and maybe make a recording so they know  what the exact problem is.

I was under the impression that embedded eloquence  in Jaws is not able to be used outside, so you need to have one of the two, I think legal versions for nvda.
as an aside and this is not recommended, the old sappi 4 version distributed as via voice out loud with the old ibm home page reader, seems to be actually very reliable. I really cannot take Eloquence  though as I find its lisp very annoying after a while!

It also depends on your system as well. I hope I’m wrong!  For some
Elequence may respond quickly while for some it’s slow to respond!  I have
it in jaws 14 and I use E speak for NVDA.  Now, Mind you I don’t have Jaws
18 but if it responds no problem then you may have a good system.  I could
be lying!

I am sorry you have problems with Jaws also. Jaws 18 is fine for me at this
end.

There is a known issue with Code Factory Eloquence  with NVDA.

I have seen several complaints from NVDA users on other lists than this
which complain of the extreme delay with NVDA loading with Code Factory
Eloquence. This caused some to recommend using the illegal NVDA Eloquence
addon  as an alternative which drew an angry response from the person
retailing Code Factory Eloquence in this country.

If was from this person retailing the Code Factory product in this country
that I learnt the tip of amending sound properties in the Control Panel  as
a partial  solution to the slow loading. He in turn had got this advice from
Code Factry as I understand it.

Presumably as not all people have the same configurations in their Sound
Control Panel applet  the  experience of people experiencing this delay may
well vary.

Hi,

Using jfw 18 with elequence, I have this problem sop I don't think this is
an NVDA problem.  JMT.

This does not happen with the  illegal versions of Eloquence which is
disappointing from a a Code Factory quality point of view.

I managed to improve matters  to some degree by going into the Sound
Properties in Windows Control Panel, selecting my default sound device and
turning off all the fancy affects like surround sound and just selecting
just basic stereo as my output format.

This has had the affect of slightly diminishing the funkier music output
from my PC but I am not now waiting upt to a minute  or more for NVDA to
load.

I still get the problem of NVDA not responding with large file explorer
windows  but what I have learnt is that if you turn Narrator on with Windows
Enter temporarily you can navigate your file lists fine until NVDA wakes up
and starts responding again. I just turn Narrator off when NVDA finally
catches up.
