Re: NVDA and Columns
Jonathan Milam
Thanks, Robert. However, the columns that I want to navigate are outside typical browsers and are in a radio automation software program. I would’ve thought that NVDA would feature a way to hear the status of a particular column quickly without the need to physically scroll over to it, especially if it is several columns over from the left.

Re: Is NVDA right for me?

Well if there are people here with good computer knowledge and experience, then the main question I would want to ask next is how to get Windows Narrator to work properly. Is there anyone here who can help me get Windows Narrator to work efficiently, so that it reads outloud exactly what I want it to each time? Right Now, it appears that Windows Narrator is like a wild horse that just runs around and does what it wants to, haha. If anyone here can help with Narrator, I'd be very grateful.

Re: using physical mouse with nvda?
Just as a data point, when I'm using an external mouse with a scroll wheel on the laptop I'm typing on, and NVDA is active, the scroll wheel still performs the scroll function in Chrome, Firefox, MS-Word, and the Everything Search results window. There can occasionally be a slight lag when one has shifted to a new window with NVDA active, but even that is no more than a second or two before the scroll wheel will work again. The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. ~ Dorothy Nevill

as far as I know the program does scroll can you give me a example of a site that does allow scrolling so I can make sure that I am not doing something wrong?

NVDA and Columns
Jonathan Milam
Hi All,
I wasn’t able to find this in the NVDA user’s guide. I know that you can use control+alt and the arrow keys to navigate columns, but is there a way of reading a single column header? In other words, Instead of having to press a command 6 times to get to the 6th column and hear its status, is there a way of just pressing a single keystroke, alt+6 for example, that will read it quickly?
Thanks, Jonathan

Re: does nvda have number processing?
Quentin Christensen
Very true. I was thinking of the more context sensitive pronunciation I guess too, similar to the way that, for instance "dr", which in one case means "doctor" but in another case means "drive".

Re: does nvda have number processing?
David Griffith
If what is being asked for is to amend the way numbers are read I believe that NVDA already has this flexibility built into it.
On my system Eloquence reads out numbers in normal format by default with NVDA. If I want that number read out as single digits I focus on the number and press numpad 5 twice. This causes NVDA to reads out the number as separate single digits. If I want the number read out as a whole number again I press the numpad 5 once. Number processing can therefore be managed on the fly.

If you mean to read "12345" as "one two three four five" or "Twelve thousand, three hundred and forty-five", then not so much at this stage, the synthesizer mostly handles that currently. You could add an entry to the dictionary, probably using Regex would be easiest, to try and adjust how numbers are read, or else create an add-on. The tricky thing is with any adjustment to how something is read, that in different contexts, the same text can mean different things, for instance. "Ring the doctor on 5556835" would be more easily understood if the numbers are read out individually, whereas "I got a new high score in my game: 5556835!" sounds better as five million, five hundred and fifty-six thousand, eight hundred and thirty-five, but it's very hard to pick the right context.

Re: NVDA and QuickBooks

NVDA doesn't change the settings of other programs. I think what happens in this case from reading Angelo's message is that Quick books detects NVDA and automatically sets itself up to work with the screen reader, or offers to. Just like how if you open a PDF file in Acrobat reader while you have a screen reader running, Acrobat will detect that and offer to set the file up to read for you.

Re: Publishing an eBook with NVDA
David Griffith
I thought it was just worth mentioning that the Codex program produced for VI Users by James Scholes includes an Explorer context menu shortcut which converts from many document formats to ePub Mobi and other formats and back.
So with this program just focus on your Word Document in Explorer, bring up the context menu, select Codex and then convert to ePub from your available options. Seems to work fine in the limited use I have made of it. This program is most often cited for Kindle DRM Removal but these other ottions are also very useful.

I haven't used Smashwords, although I have published on other platforms. One tool I have used is Calibre which converts documents to and from a number of formats, including ePub (and mobi).
Once you have an ePub, it's worth running through: http://validator.idpf.org/ which will test whether there are any major ePub validation errors which will often throw up red flags on various publishing sites (Apple iBooks will reject books which don't pass that validator for instance - or at least, if they reject you, they recommend fixing any errors that site shows).
Kind regards
Quentin.

The archive is here: http://www.nvaccess.org/category/in-process/ We are very slowly planning an updated website, so there are some things we'd like to do, which may not make it into the current site, but which will hopefully be available once the new site is launched. I know a more easily findable In-Process is on my wish list :) Regards Quentin.

Re: using physical mouse with nvda?

Hi Hank, Silly question, but does the mouse wheel scroll down in the program you are using if NVDA is not running? I have enough sight to use the mouse as well, and I find sometimes, particularly on say the web, I will grab the mouse if I do want to scroll down and read something further down because I can use the scroll wheel for that. Regards Quentin.

Hi Hank, I hope Rui was able to help you. Another idea for learning Object Navigation are our "Basic training for NVDA" module, which, despite the name, does cover the review cursor and object navigation, and has a number of activities to help you get it down pat. You could try our telephone support. Both available from: http://www.nvaccess.org/shop/ Kind regards Quentin.

Edge and weird language changes
Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>
I have been asked to ask this.
It seems that Edge sometimes interpret English pages as having another language in all or part of the page. As yet I have not been sent examples. Firefox on the same pages does not. this to me suggests that the issue is not nvda related, but some quirk of Edge on some web sites, probably not tested on that browser. Just putting a feeler out before I reply really. I don't use Edge, it seems clunky by comparison to Firefox. Brian bglists@blueyonder.co.uk Sent via blueyonder.
