locked Incredibly basic Excel functionality, and a few extremely elementary questions

Christopher-Mark Gilland <clgilland07@...>

Guys,

I just have taken on a new position at my church. One of the things which will be required of me on a very regular basis is to read spreadsheet documents which will be created in Excel.

I should make it very clear that these files will not have anything in them of numerical value, nor have any formulas. The only reason they are using Excel is to keep things neetly organized in both rows and columns, and to make sure that things accessibly line up correctly.

So, being that we are not using Excel for the mathematical side of it, but more just for very basic organization, I’m curious how well NVDA will work with Excel, seeing that I honestly haven’t really used it heavily up until now. It seems to work very very well with JAWS, but I’ve not had the chance to try it with NVDA. If this doesn’t work, which I’m sure it probably will, then I’m going to have to work with them on another sollution, which isn’t a problem, I just need to know either way.

As for my few questions, provided that the lady who does the documents makes the first row of columns specifically be headers, like, name, location assighment, etc, then is there a way, say, I then went to the next row down and saw Chris Gilland, could I somehow query the header of that column and see that I’m in the, “Name” column?

Secondly, is there a way to have excel report the current cell coordinants without the need for me to focus on another cell, then move back to the one I initially was in thereby forcing NVDA to speak them? And finally, can I have NVDA read not just one cell at a time, but instead read me the entire row?

Thanks.

Chris.

PHPstorm and NVDA

Bogdan Onyshenko

Hello all. Please help. Here is the problem: when I try to use a PHPstorm IDE by Jetbrains it is written on Java I have a problem with it's editor. When I start to edit the text write somethin I can't access the previous text that I wrote one symbol ago or line. In order to be able to read everythin I have written I have to press Alt+Tab and focus an other window and go back to the IDE. How can I avoid pressing Alt+Tab and read text normaly? I have NVDA version 2017.1 and Phpstorm version 2016-3-3.

P.S. Sorry for my bad spelling. I will do my best to improve it.

Stephen,

I will echo Gene's observation that MS-Edge does not yet have a number of accessibility issues worked out, which is but one reason that I avoid it and encourage my clients to do so as well until they are.

I know what follows will sound like difficult advice, particularly since you are early in your personal journey with losing your vision, but you will find that you must have both an alternative screen reader (and on Windows 10 that could be Narrator) and an alternative web browser or browsers in your "back pocket" for use when necessary.  There are definitely enough similarities between the major web browsers that this is not close to impossible to do for what most of us consider routine browsing tasks.   JAWS and NVDA have enough similarity that using one or the other becomes reasonably easy, too.  I have not yet played with Narrator because it's not something that any of my clients have used or wanted to use yet.  I have seen all sorts of websites that would not cooperate with a specific screen reader, web browser, or both and that's for browsers other than Edge.  Even if it's at the most basic level you will occasionally need to punt to another browser, screen reader, or both to work around issues with the occasional quirky website that just doesn't want to behave for you.

Your description with regard to MS-Edge refreshing is interesting to me because, even though I'm not generally using a screen reader, it will do this when I return focus to my Gmail that's being displayed in the Edge browser if I've been away from that screen for a while.  This is a 100% consistent behavior that's been going on for a long time now.  I think it applies to other webpages, too, but now I'll have to test that out to be sure.

Re: certification test

I sat the exam and will probably be getting a proper certificate soon when I can actually afford it. I'm curious though; is there some way we could have the ability to see which questions we got wrong--or at least see our scores for each of the sections individually? I realize the former might be difficult to code depending on how it's designed, so I hardly expect this to be on the priority list.

Hi Gene,

Sorry I didn't get to help you earlier, glad you got the login sorted out.

The cost of the certification is $100 AUD, which works out to around $75 USD (or thereabouts currently, depending on the exchange rate).  The rate for renewals is 50% ($50 AUD or $38 USD or thereabouts, which is a yearly renewal.

Anyone can do the exam, there is no cost for sitting the test, however, after passing the text, to purchase a certificate and have your name added to the certified individuals list costs AUD $100, which is roughly $75 USD (depending on the current exchange rate).  You have 55 minutes to complete the test.

If you have worked through the "Basic Training for NVDA" module, and understood the material, you should be well prepared for the exam, however it is important to stress that purchase of the training module is not required to sit the exam or become certified.

Also, for those who have done the certification, apologies for the delay, I'm about to send the certificates out this morning.

Kind regards

Well, off-hand, windows ease of access has high-contrast options that might/should be possible to apply system-wide?

If you hit windows key + U, to bring up ease of access centre, tab over to list of settings groupings, arrow down to high contrast, and, use NVDA key + numpad enter to set focus to it, then that dialogue might offer you some system-wide high-contrast settings?

Otherwise, there are probably ways to enforce some style changes across both firefox and IE11 - like said, just have no experience with this type of thing myself.

In what sense does it provide better for low vision? Is this in terms of form sof adjustment/add-ons?

Ask that since, generally, firefox can offer almost any add-on that any other browser offers, including some that let you adjust general content rendering, etc., but, sorry - I have literally zero experience with low vision adjustment/adaptation, since I went from sighted to 100% blind a few years myself, but, for example, what comes to mind is that if this relates to forms of magnification, etc. then maybe using windows magnifier, along with another browser might be of some use?

But, like said, sorry, but, have no experience with this aspect of accessibility myself.

adding a braille table in NVDA, is it posible?

Fernando Apan

Hi all. I need to read braille scores which are written in a table from spain, so my question is if it's possible to create or add a new table in NVDA that I can select later in order to be able to read my music. In jaws, for example, I just copyed the table esp437.jbt into the jaws folder and executed jaws again and it was all set. Can I do the same with NVDA?

Thanks in advance for your help in this matter.

NVDA probably does not like an xhtml input control on an HTML5 webpage, which is embedded in a block of MathML. It all works on Firefox and Chrome though.

Website? And, have you tried different browsers, like firefox?

Sounds like might be a form of DHTML making changes to page contents
when you make a selection in the drop-down box, or something?

Simple high contrast out-of-the-box. The elements line links can have theme colors adjusted on the system, so they work everywhere.

NVDA changing tab order

@JoseP

Hi everyone.

I'm making accessible one web application and I'm facing a really weird issue. The application opens a web browser (internet explorer) and navigates through asp pages which have a flash embedded in html.

I have the tabIndex defined in the elements of the flash movies and everything works ok in our test machine.

The problem comes when I switch to a different computer. With NVDA turned off (or turned on in silent mode), the tab order works as intended. When I open NVDA or I disable the silent mode, the tab order is messed up. I've tried in several computers and that happens in all of them, except the test machine which for some reason works ok.

Both machines (the test one which works ok and the ones that fail) are pointing to the same server, so they both use the same asp pages, flash movies etc.

I've also checked both NVDA have the same configuration (I even exported a portable copy of the NVDA working ok and run it in the other machines). Internet explorer and flash also have the same version and configuration.

Any ideas about why this is happening? I've spent a lot of time investigating the issue with no success, so any help would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Maybe either chrome, or FB themselves made changes/updates?

And, yes, understand where you're coming from, but, on my side, I use different browsers for all sorts of different, specific things - yes, I am a web developer...LOL!

Good luck, either way

I ask that since I generally stick to either firefox, or actually internet explorer 11 for that site, while I do in fact use chrome as my primary browser for most other web content, but, that's purely because chrome insists on rendering it in a much more fancy way, whereas something like IE11 renders it the same way it has been doing for a few yers now, and, generally, firefox seems to as well.

In chrome webstore there are many extensions that allow you to change user agent, currently I'm using:
User-Agent Switcher for Chrome.

The trick is to define a rule, in which you use always google chrome as user agent, but when you digit m.facebook.com automagically your user agent is firefox 33.

You and others may know this but since you mention the default browser, I'll make the following comments.  It doesn't matter what browser is the default.  it's no harder to open another browser and follow a book mark.  All that having a browser set as default means is that if you follow a link from an e-mail program your default browser will open or if you have a link somewhere such as on the desktop and follow it, the default browser will open.  If almost all you use another browser for is this one site, you might make it the home page.  Or as I said, you could open the browser and follow a book mark.

Hi,

You say you’re using build 15063? If so, have you tried with latest next snapshots? If not, I strongly recommend that you do so.

Cheers,

If you want solve the problem you must change user agent, so you tell m.facebook.com that you are using firefox 33, also if you are using google chrome.

In chrome webstore there are many extensions that allow you to change user agent, currently I'm using:
User-Agent Switcher for Chrome.

The trick is to define a rule, in which you use always google chrome as user agent, but when you digit m.facebook.com automagically your user agent is firefox 33.

Hope this help!

Re: Microsoft Edge issue - Forms refreshing

I use Edge for low vision and testing. It really should work a bit better in combination. Edge is the best green browser for low vision.  Narrator does not cause a fault condition, but has a different reading behavior.

Well, then, issue is edge's rendition of web content in terms of how NVDA, etc. interpret it?

What happens if you fire up narrator, and try use it on that site, or else is there a reason you're specifically using edge on that site?

No, it is definitely NVDA causing a fault in both drop downs and some input scenarios. I have a page that runs well on Firefox, normal on Chrome, and reloads to a fault condition in Edge with NVDA running. I see this on bank sites and some other places too. It has also been happening on some settings pages, such as add account.

There is some improvement here overall, but it continues to have insert faults, like when a windows drop down closes or when a character is entered. I am using MathML with input when it fails in Edge.

Website? And, have you tried different browsers, like firefox?

Sounds like might be a form of DHTML making changes to page contents
when you make a selection in the drop-down box, or something?
