Just for the record, there is a free alternative to Qcast. It is the accessible podcatcher, found in the webbie suite of accessible programs. Link is below.

Now you see why we need to have updates announced when you check for updates so you can defer them until there is a fix for them and some on this list don't think so.  Some of us care what is being downloaded in toour computers.  I still want what little control I still have.

Read current line 3 times to copy its content to clipboard?

Gerardo Corripio

I've always wondered with nvda Why not PUT IN A COMMAND OF 3-TIMES nvda+L (Laptop keyboard layout) that reads current line, 3-times so that what NVDA just read gets copied onto the Clipboard? Just like the logic behind NVDA+t 3-times to copy the title's content to the clipboard, the same logic could be applied to NVDA+l 3-times, right? it's just so natural of nvda+T 3-times that I've thought why not implement this into copy current line? I'm always looking for ways to better NVDA, thus the suggestion.

Re: using find to locate text on a webpage with NVDA 17.1

Chris Mullins

Hi

I tried to access afb.org using NVDA 17.1 and observed the following:

  • Opened afb.com site in Google chrome
  • * pressed letter f
  • * landed in ‘Search edit’ box, no reference to landmark or combo box
  • Pressed spacebar to enter focus mode and typed ‘access world’, (just as a test).
  • Pressed tab and landed on a ‘Go’ button, which I assume is what is pressed to start the search (Your pressing enter after typing your search criteria works just as well but if your instructing students, using the site as intended may be a more correct approach)
  • Landed on link entitled ‘Skip to Content’, and pressed enter to activate
  • Landed on heading entitled ‘Search Results for: access world’
  • Used down arrow to read through the search results.

A ‘one size fits all’ approach to browsing the web is not appropriate as sites have varying levels of accessibility built into them.  Afb.com has accessibility at the forefront of it’s design and as you would expect is very blind user friendly.

Do you mean using h to move through results?  NVDA has the same kind of input help that JAWS does.  NVDA and 1 on the main keyboard toggles it on and off.  While in the browser, you can check all the quick navigation keys by typing any key you want and seeing what it says.  the movement commands, h for heading, n for skip block, of links, b for button, etc. are almost all the same in JAWS and NVEDA.

Yes, the find was causing me problems.

However, I do have one more question now you asked.

When I am using google, when moving to the search edit field I press the letter f as with other screenreading programs.

Then when reaching “search landmark combo box editable” I hit enter, a short click signaling the edit field is opened.

Then I enter text and hit enter.

Next I press escape and a short beep is heard.  Pressing H will move me through the search results as should happen.  Is that the recommended way with NVDA?

It's control NVDA key f.  If you are using the default desktop layout, insert is the only active NVDA key.  Do you know other commands students should know such as read current line and other screen review commands?

Greeting NVDA wizards,

I am trying to write directions for some students on how to search a webpage for text.

I am using AFB.org site. I wish them to locate “access” that will land the cursor on “Access World Registered.” This is a magazine published by AFB which I am sure all of you have heard of.

However, When trying control-f, typing in the search and hitting enter. The cursor does not move anywhere.

I had heard this was going to be fixed in Version 17.1. Does anyone have a solution or work around?

Thanks in advance.

Re: NVDA with LibreOffice annoyances - Silent is not golden

This problem apparently arises when the CTRL+PAGEUP or CTRL+PAGEDOWN are used to navigate between the spreadsheets in a file.

I forgot to mention that NVDA is not totally mute in Calc. It announces the title bar.

It seems that the sheet change somehow affects NVDA.

Em 03/01/2017 09:25, Walmir Schultz via Groups.Io escreveu:

I have a spreadsheet composed of many sheets.

While editing the data, sometimes NVDA stops announcing anything in Calc, but continues to work in the other open applications.
The only way to force NVDA to speak again within Calc is restarting it.
I mentioned the existence of various sheets because this behavior do not exist in a spreadsheet with only one sheet.
Note that I myself and other people already mentioned this issue in this group.

Re: NVDA and LibreOfice annoyances - Two, three or many places?

Walmir Schultz <wsautodidata@...>

Excuse me, but LibreOffice is broken, at least when working with NVDA.

This is especially true with Calc.

At least in the case of decimal digits being announced in a different form that they are shown on the screen, the fault apparently is of LibreOffice 5.2.x

Nasrin,

As a matter of policy I never use anything but the latest versions of open source or free software such as LibreOffice, so I really can't advise regarding what earlier versions are like.   I personally would not use an earlier version unless the latest has somehow become broken from an accessibility standpoint, and that's not particularly likely.

Well, the ribbons show up in Wordpad under Creators Update.

I tire of hearing the hue and cry about "forced" updates. Virtually every OS
applies updates specified by the maker of said OS automatically, and now
Windows does so. Yes, there's the occasional bad update. Under Windows 10
the system health telemetry has already shown its value in stopping
problematic updates in their path and resulting in faster fixes. The
Anniversary Update roll out was greatly extended because of unanticipated
issues. Given the amount of different hardware that Windows, all versions of
Windows, run on it's not possible for Microsoft to do comprehensive testing
on all of it. This alone means that there are always going to be occasional
issues regardless of how well tested it was before its release "into the
wild."

I've seen three reports now cumulatively on different lists that Windows 10 users aren't affected by the Wordpad problem.  One or two users have Windows 7 and Windows 10 computers and they have the problem on their Windows 7 machines after updating and not on their Windows 10 machines updating.  So Windows 10 users don't need to worry.

No none of those. For a start it affects windoze 7, and also does not care what synth is in use.
I think either the menus themselves fail or the data from them do not get to the screenreader. I don't have other readers on this pc so cannot run tests.

I have seen some busy issues on oler preview vuilds, which made apps not run. I have also seen some times when NVDA stops speaking for a while recently on new preview buils 15170. This is most often associated with hangs in Edge and Mail then stops working until a NBDA restart or system restart. There was a time when the speech stopped working due to some corruption in the SAPI subsystem. I switched to eSpeak for a short time, and back to Microsoft.

After some use, particualy if you have multiple folders and software open
and are alt tabbing around them, you suddenly find windows menus do not
work, well, some do but say the following certainly don't
Context menus
Shut down menu
nvda menu, which is like a context I guess, and some other parts of
windows.
Now I cannot it seems invoke narrator to get to see if the menus are there
or not. I've seen this mostly in windows 7, but occasionally in 10 before my
machine went bang. A complete windows restart puts things right but nvda
restarts have no effect.
I've tried shutting and opening again explorer, with no effect as the task
manager does still operate.
