Re: is there a clock add on?
For the time, press NVDA+F12. The NVDA key is usually INSERT by default, or you can set it to CAPS LOCK which is useful on some laptops.
If you press NVDA+F12 twice quickly, you get the date.
NVDA+T will actually read the title bar of the current window.
If you're interested in additional training on using NVDA, we have a training module available now called "Basic Training for NVDA" which you can get in either electronic text (it comes in four variants so you should be able to read it with just about anything), DAISY audio or hardcopy Braille. See http://www.nvaccess.org/shop/ for details.
Kind regards
Quentin.

Re: File Format Converter Recommendations
Brian's Mail list account
The Goldwave Editor seems to work for mp3/wav. I have no idea about the other though. I'd have thought that youtube would have some kind of checbox if you had no video content, that would seem sensible then it could just display a caption. Of course sense has never come into many computer related things.

I found several online options, but uploading 117 mb .wav files and downloading a similarly sized converted version back is too resource-hungry a process in my view. Therefore, could you recommend me any free and accessible programs that would enable me to convert a versatile range of file formats offline? In addition to the above question, I am also curious about whether a directly converted Wav to FLV file would be accepted as a YouTube video, as I am informed that YouTube compulsorily requires some slight visual or image content to be present even in the .flv video file format, an information about which I reserve my skepticisms, and on which I thus request your insights and inputs. Thanks.

Matthew,
Thanks for the response!
No, I don’t have any toolbars enabled. Restarting
Outlook does not affect the problem either.
It’s as if there was a “curtain” over the first 54 messages.
The 55th message is visible as normal but the 54th is not.
Since the problem stays with the messages when I move the whole block of 150
messages to another folder, it must be that there is some characteristics of the
messages that causes NVDA to stop reporting the information on each message
until it gets to the bottom of the “curtain”
Do please keep the responses coming!

I use the free
version of Spam Reader to get rid of spam. The Professional version doesn't have
this disclaimer in outgoing emails. Try Spam Reader for free

Just a thought, but do you have any tool
bars enabled. I usually disable all tools and turn off the preview.
Also, try restarting outlook and see if that works.

I’ll take each of
your points in turn:
- What happens if you

A: The problem

- Move to the folders

A: This does not
affect the behaviour. Like you, I tried this but it did not change
anything.
- control home and end
are not the correct commands to use in a list or tree view.
A: Thanks for the
advice! In fact, both actions work equally well in my Outlook message list as
the messages are never unselected. However, I thank you for setting me straight
on the purpose of these keystrokes!

Another work around to
try would be to move to the folders list, move out of the current folder, then
back. You can try both and use whichever works or, if they both work, use
the method you prefer..
Also, control home and
end are not the correct commands to use in a list or tree view. Home and
end are. If you use control home and end. you will move to the top or
bottom of the list or tree view, but the item you move to will not be
selected. using home and end moves you to and selects the first or last
item and is consistent with the behavior of using the up and down arrow keys,
that is, move and select. Control home and end are correct commands for
edit fields such as in word processors.

Subject: [nvda] Unreadable
message titles in Inbox list
Hi,
I have an strange problem reading Messages in my
inbox!
I am using Outlook 2016 in Windows 10 with NVDA . (All latest
versions).
This problem happens frequently but not all the time. I
cannot find out what the cause of the problem is. I also cannot see when it
might or might not happen.
Here's the story:
I get about 200 messages a day from all the discussion lists
that I am following and some personal emails. I like to keep my messages in
reverse sort order so that the oldest are at the top. This way, I can keep the
messages that interest me at the top of the list and delete the newer ones below
when I don't want to keep them.
my method for managing the messages is to press
down-arrow on a message if I want to keep it so that the next message comes into
focus. If I want to reject the message, I press the delete key. This moves the
next message up into the position of the NVDA focus. In this way, I can move
through all the messages rapidly.
When the mysterious problem appears, I have found that
down-arrow reveals nothing. Just silence. I have to press tab to jump away from
the message list and shift-tab to get back and then I find that NVDA+numpad 8
tells me that the next message has actually moved up into the focus position as
you would expect. No amount of up-arrow or down-arrow yields any speech on each
of the messages. As you know, what should happen is that I hear the sender and
title information as the arrow moves from message to message.
I have persisted with down-arrow from silent message to
silent message and found that I can get back to the normal echoing behaviour
after about the 150th message! Alternatively, I can press control and
end to move to the 250th or last message in the Inbox
where the movement of the up-arrow is echoed from message to message as normal.
As an experiment, I have persisted with the up-arrow from the bottom of the list
and found that when I arrive at the 150th message from the top, I suddenly lose
the speaking of the sender and title details again. In other words, I am back
into the unspeaking block of messages! I checked the 151st message
and, sure enough, NVDA reads out the title details. Then I press up-arrow back
to the 150th to find it silent and all the rest of the messages above
it to the top continued silent as before.
I hope you can follow this! It is as if a curtain lies over
the first 150 messages. I can get out from under the curtain at about the
151st message and proceed as normal to the last message. Likewise, I
can jump to the bottom of the list and read all the message details until I rise
back up to the bottom of the curtain at the 150th message.
As I said at the beginning, this does not happen every day
but it does happen frequently.
The last time it happened, I saved the 150 curtained messages
in a new folder and the unreadable behaviour persists even now.
Please understand that I can press enter on each message,
whether “curtained” or not, and read it
perfectly. The problem is that of identifying the message in the Inbox list
before opening it.
I would welcome any ideas or suggestions to see if I can get
to the bottom of this behaviour.
By the way, JAWS does not have this problem – only NVDA. I have tried
JAWS 16 on the same “curtained” block of messages and JAWS
can read each of the title details normally.
All the best,
Cearbhall

Re: how to select a specific large text in nvda in ms word
, You beat me to the NVDA+f9 and NVDA+f10 pairing by mere moments, and I was playing with same in MS-Word 2010. You are correct that if you prefer to use the Windows Copy (Ctrl+C) command once the text is selected this behaves just like NVDA+F10 struck twice quickly if you're in a text editing program. Now I've got to get the hang of this in JAWS, too. My clients who do a lot of writing often want to know how to get precise "large chunks" selected in the middle of documents that don't necessarily start or end at paragraph or line boundaries. -- Brian The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. ~ Dorothy Nevill

Re: how to select a specific large text in nvda in ms word
It sounds as though that will do what is
wanted. I hadn't thought of applying it in this way but you could mark the
beginning of something, then find the end however you want, even by searching
for something, and using the end marker when you get to the right place.
If you are going to do this, you
should be in object navigation mode. You will be if you haven't changed it
since you started NVDA.

Subject: Re: [nvda] how to select a specific large text in nvda in
ms word
Hello all,
Actually, Gene, there is such a command in NVDA. NVDA+F9 to mark the
beginning of the selection and NVDA+F10 to mark the end of the selection. Note,
that NVDA+F10 will select even the character on the right of the text
caret/cursor, and not only to the character on the left of the caret/cursor. So,
you use standard text navigation commands to go to the place from which you want
to start the selection, press NVDA+F9 to mark that position, again use standard
text navigation commands to go to the place in which you want to end the
selection and press NVDA+F10 there. Pressing once NVDA+F10 will only complete
the selection. If you want to also copy the selected text, you'll have to press
it twice. But in text editors like MS Word, NotePad and NotePad++ for example,
pressing it twice is not needed - the text is normally selected (unlike how it
is done by NVDA in virtual buffers) and you can press Control+C to copy the
selected text. You can press NVDA+Shift+Up Arrow to check what text has been
selected. Note, that the "NVDA" key is normally (with a "Desktop" keyboard
layout set in NVDA) the INSERT key.

As far as I know, there isn't a comparable
command. If you move to where you want to select text and hold the shift
and do page down, you will select text much more quickly. You can also
probably hold the down arrow key and select text more slowly but still much
more pleasantly than repeatedly pressing down arrow fifty or one-hundred times
or more. You can move down quickly in the ways I described. then
if you move too far, hold the shift key and move up until where you get to
where you want selection to end. Moving up unselects what you have
selected and are now moving back through to the point where you stop moving
back. You can check to see where you are by releasing shift and using
the screen-review command, read current line. then hold the shift again
and move more in whatever direction you wish. you can use all the
movement commands, right and left arrow, up and down arrow page up and down,
etc.

Subject: [nvda] how to select a specific large text in nvda in ms
word
Hi listers, I asked this question from many nvda experts but
no one has answered me properly. actually i wanna switch to nvda because
jaws stucks much in ms wword but i need some keys to know in nvda. Kindly
tell me how may I select a specific large text in nvda which is neither at
the top of the document to be selected by ctrl shift home or at the end to
be selected by ctrl shift end, the text is at the middle , in the
middle somewhere. how can i do this in nvda? shift down arrow is too
long process as the text is large. I often do this work and in jaws
i accomplish it by temporarily marking the place from where
that specific text is starting and then i press insert space then m
to select all text from that temporary placemark to the current
position of the text. kindly tell me the comparable command in nvda. it
will make my switch easy. Thanks.
