Re: Question about reading a whole row with nvda in excel
Quentin Christensen
Hi Gene, There isn't a direct command, but a workaround is: 1. Press SHIFT+SPACEBAR to select the row 2. Press control+c to copy it to the clipboard 3. Press NVDA+c to read the clipboard This will read the whole row as one block of text. Note that it will overwrite anything you already had on the clipboard. It also reads the values of cells, not formulas. If you want formulas read, press control+` (control+grav) to toggle between showing values and formulas before copying the row. Similarly, if you want to read the column, press control+spacebar instead of shift+spacebar at step 1. Kind regards Quentin.

The BBC have killed their 7-day TV listings: you get "Maintenance mode: From April 18, 2017, the BBC is no longer able to offer XML, RDF and iCalendar (.ics) views of programme metadata from this location." Re: Scanning and Reading PDF files
Travis Siegel <tsiegel@...>
OCR isn't necessary if the person who makes the pdf file puts text into the pdf. Only if the person who prepars the pdf puts images of text in it does OCR need to be run on the pdf file. Most pdf files are created with plain text, and are therefore readable by screen readers. It's only those folks who use screen shots, or graphical representations of text that can't be read directly by screen readers. If you use the control-p command, and tell windows to print to a pdf, as long as you're printing text, it will produce a pdf file that is readable by anyone using a screen reader. If you're using a program that represents text as images (such as most desktop publishing programs), then you will get a graphic picture of the text, and in that case, OCR will be necessary to read the text.

Re: might be OT: image file descriptions
Antony Stone
Where do you want to put these descriptions?
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
There's no facility in the JPEG format for storing them in the same file as the image. You'd need to identify where & how you want these descriptions to be displayed, and then store them in something like: - text files with the same name as the JPEG, but a .txt extension - a database linking the image filesname to the descriptions - some library or gallery application which supports this sort of labelling Tell us how you want to use them and we might be able to suggest somethig more specific, but JPEG itself doesn't provide this in the way that MP3 does. I’m not sure if this is an accessibility issue that I don’t know how to do or if I am in the right place.
I would like to be able to added short descriptions to JPEG files something like being able to edit mp3 tags.

Re: Scanning and Reading PDF files
Gene
Screen-readers can't read images or pictures of
text. Anything that is read using any program is real text, consisting of
computer code for the text. If you open a PDF document and NVDA reads it,
it is real text. No OCR is necessary. If you open a document and
it’s a picture of text, you must perform OCR on it.
