Good morning list,

How much hassle am I asking for if I install NVDA on my laptop before
uninstalling window-eyes? I'm hoping to do a soft transition but want to
avoid software conflicts.

I would never actually run these simultaneously, obviously.

Suggestions welcome.

Hi All,

In 2017.2, and even in earlier versions of NVDA, I am having an issue where
NVDA will not speak the contents of windows explorer windows whenever I
arrow up and down through listviews. Is anyone else seeing this?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Re: soft-voice and objPad comments

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

More or less I think. I'm not sure which I prefer, all obj pad does is 2ds a 3D view which if all you are after is to find a particularly awkward control is fine. I do not know enough about the Jaws cursor to know how much like it it is, but I seem to recall that can be a bit like swinging the mouse about a screen but with keys not a mouse.

I haven't used ObjPad but I don't think your description is accurate. The documentation appears to indicate that it allows moving through objects without respect to their position in the tree, if that is a proper way to put it, in other words, without respect to whether they are parent or child. You evidently don't have to move into a child object to move through it. But that is not the same as screen review and there are times when you see something in screen review you don't in object navigation. the opposite is also true depending on how a program is designed.

It is important not to provide misleading information when describing something.

You may be enthusiastic about the add on because you don't like using object navigation as it is implemented in NVDA itself. But my preference is to see how things are organized. You are making it sound as though the add on somehow does more than object navigation in NVDA. It appears to me that that isn't true. It just does it differently.

Others will, I hope, indicate whether my understanding is correct.

Upon using objPad for a bit I can say that it is excellent at what it
does! I wanted a jaws-like-cursor for NVDA? I got one and in fact its so
awesome because it takes the old jaws cursor along with the jaws touch
cursor and rolls them into one yet its even easier to use! I really
really like objPad and will be telling everyone about it. And I may have
found another free synthesizer addon for NVDA for all of us to use. For
personal use only, not commercial use... It is called soft-voice and it
sounds similar to eloquence but better than eSpeak. I have one or two
more things to check out with the soft-voice tts makers but once I do
and everything is go then I'll let all of you know the final verdict on
soft-voice tts. I can tell you that it sounds a bit like eloquence but
it only supports english and spanish languages. and that it has a bunch
of interesting novelty voices along with the normal voices and its very
small and fast and responsive. I will not post it here though until I'm
certain its fine with the authors.

I am finding that the latest version of NVDA works pretty well with the Edge browser. Guess my question now is what advantages does the Edge browser have over any other browser? Maybe a tutorial for Edge is out there somewhere that would answer such questions. I would like to get away from using the IE browser as it crashes more than Firefox or ?Google Chrome.
I really appreciate all the people who work on the development of NVDA.

As I and others have said, you can find out what you ar running by bringing up the menu with nvda/n and going to help and about
Or you could use the check for updates on the help menu. If there is an update and its not been flagged automatically after a few days, then you may find automatic updates is turned of in one of the preferences settings.

Hello, everyone.

I'm very new to NVDA, having just installed the program and joined this list
a week or so ago.

I understand there is a new NVDA update, but I'm not sure how to know what
version of NVDA I currently have, and how to get the latest update.

Or, does NVDA update itself automatically?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Nvda already does this on itself of course.
It did it yesterday, and on machines running snapshots has been known to do it daily. Not sure about add ons but that is being worked on. sometimes you do not want to update as some funtions cause issues on some operating systems so you do need to be careful.

Hello!

I would like to see NVDA have an automatic downloading and installing of each latest update while NVDA is running and it would be good if all of the latest new AddOns would be gathered up or collected in one folder and also automatically downloaded and installed once every three months, which means us amatures would be able to get the latest updates and AddOns automatically and would not miss out on important updates and AddOns; I often don’t know which updates and/or AddOns to download and install, sometimes missing them altogether, so this practice would help me immensely in keeping up to date with the development of NVDA, as it strives to keep pace with Windows 10 development; maybe this is a bit unrealistic but it could work and benefit all of us NVDA users; in order to facilitate financial donations, NVDA users could subscribe to email notifications with financial request adds in the emails and a checkbox could be added somewhere in NVDA to turn this feature on or off and give people automatic donations in whichever amount they wish; I know I am acting lazy here but many new NVDA users could be helped by knowing he or she has the most current product available; and I think you guys for listening to me on this matter.

Podcast standards

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

I was always under the impression that all podcasts were http, not https.
However the ones I mainly use are http, such as bbc, cool Blind Tech, and audio boom from rnib and our own, it seems that nature have recently decided to put theirs out in https, and therefore they no longer work in Juice.
The question for everyone here is.
Is there an accessible podcast automatic downloader that does handle the https protocol, which is perhaps non standard, but is obviously now creeping in to our world..
Some people tell me, but I cannot actually prove it, that Apples podcasts are https, and this might well be why they are going down this route.
Anyone have any experience on windows of this problem as of course its got to work with nvda. I do not want to go around installing loads of podcast receivers simply to find all have drawbacks.

Hi

the quickest way is press the windows key and in the search box type
default apps. you may not have to type it all but it will come up with a
search result called that. Press the enter key on it.

in that section it will give you options such as default browser, email etc

Tab to the one you want then either press the enter key or space bar. it
should drop down a list of stuff you can use, then press the enter key
on the one you want.

do that for your other apps if needed.

the following page might help you as well from off my website it is a
few of the things i changed etc. this was written when windows 10 came
out and the one for the start menu is the older way not the new way.
apart from that you might find some thing useful on it.

Hi

If you want a media player to play your dvds and in most cases turn on
the audio description if on the dvd, VLC media player does the job.

some times you might be unable to play a dvd where they show the stuff
on screen, but the cloud ocr add on can help you there to.

I do have a tutorial on VLC media player if you are interested, it is
basically more written for playing music and dvds.
