Could this be the old problem of the windows system not detecting the processor max out when its throttled back for laptop battery life do you think. Not using Outlook It was just an idea.

Subject: [nvda] Sluggish reading of emails in Outlook

Hi all,

I'm using NVDA 2017.2 on an HP Spectre 13 laptop running Windows 10
Creator's Edition.

I'm finding that NVDA performs sluggishly when reading the body of emails by
line in Outlook 2016. There's probably a 0.5-0.775 second delay between me
pressing the down arrow and hearing any text.

I'm using SAPI 5 Eloquence as my default speech synthesiser but am getting
similar results with ESpeak.

Is there anything I can do to improve NVDA's responsiveness?

Cheers,

Ed

Re: Braille display cursor routing

Mallard <mallard@...>

Hello there,

You can toggle this setting with the key combination

NVDA + Ctrl + t.

I use it a lot, because keeping the cursor tethered to Review doesn't show a lot of stuff on the left of the braille display. On the other hand, when I do translations and need to use cursor routing a lot, I need the cursor to be tied to Focus.

hth, ciao,

Re: rolling back to NVDA 2017.1

hi brian and joseph.
i downloaded nvda 2017.2
even sometimes when i started my computer and pressed start button to
bring the menus, nvda became unresponsive and silent.
sometimes, using TaskManager and ending processing of nvda and its
shortcut to start nvda or sometimes, nvda's shortcut for starting it,
was helpful for me.
but sometimes i needded to use power button to turn of my system!
i use windows xp, with twoGb of ram and cpu two cores.
in most cases, also i could not use firefox easily and i should press
alt+tab many tabs many tabs or close firefox or end process of nvda
and restart it to work.
so i completely uninstalled 2017.2 and returned to 2017.1
its extremely fast and completely responsive without any hang or crash.
i am completely satisfied with nvda 2017.1 and i dont have any problem
which i mentioned in this list or in the github with firefox using
this version of nvda.
nvda 2017.1 is the best version for me.

Hi everyone,

It appears a code responsible for handling transparent text when looking at

the screen may have contributed to this problem, or perhaps there's some
code entered into NVDA master around March 2017 that might be causing issues

for those affected. I have raised an issue at:
https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/7251

The slowdown I noticed that made me roll back to 2017.1 is happening on
Windows 7. The processes I notice the slowdown on are ones that have
progress bars on the screen. One does a file scan of files across quite a
few folders, and the other is loading audio files and converting them to
different formats. Under NVDA 2017.2 it takes several times longer for these

processes to run than it does with NVDA 2017.1 running. I tried turning
progress bar updates completely off, but this didn't help.
I didn't notice any other slowness on my systems using 2017.2, only when
there were progress bars involved.

However they work well.

Hi,
The slowness has been ongoing since the 2017 version. It comes and go.
When I start my Outlook 2013, there is a definite silence for close
to a minute then its starts reading. The moment I begin scrolling
rapidly with the down arrow, the voice gets stuck and I have to play
with it to get it going. The same happens with Firefox, worse

reported this various times. I am glad

this will be thoroughly investigated as it is very frustrating and
even risky when you are in the middle of a brokerage transaction or

You might get access to more Flash objects, maybe a good many more, without Grease Monkey if you do the following:
Don't press enter on the Flash object.
When you are on it, route the virtual mouse to it and then left click the mouse.

Even without doing so, I believe most people can get access to a fair number of Flash objects.  Your experience may be related to the sites you use and may be anomalous.

ALPS/Synaptics notebook touchpads in Windows
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Due to a Windows driver issue, you cannot scroll through LibreOffice documents when you slide your finger across an ALPS/Synaptics touchpad.

To enable touchpad scrolling, add the following lines to the "C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.ini" configuration file, and restart your computer:

[LibreOffice]

FC = "SALFRAME"

SF = 0x10000000

SF |= 0x00004000

The location of the configuration file might vary on different versions of Windows.

You may well be able to turn it off using the system tray.

In the system tray, you will find something related to the touch pad
or the device being used. Mine says something like Synaptic pointing device.
Click the icon, you may have to experiment and see which click works,
and you are in a multipage dialog. I almost never have worked with it
but if you shift tab once, you will be in a place where you can right
arrow to see the different pages. Look for device settings. On mine,
it's the last item to the right so I can get there by pressing end.
Then, if you tab around, you will see an item that says disable. It's
a button. Press the space bar and then tab to and activate the ok button.
You can enable it in the same way. When you return to that part of
the dialog, you will see enable. But to avoid the inconvenience of
repeatedly disabling and enabling it, why not just buy or get an
external mouse and connect it when needed.

I have no idea if the crashing problem is caused by the touchpad. I
suspect things won't be that simple. Windows keeps a record of every
crash and having it looked at may provide the answer if a technically
knowledgeable person looks at it. If the touchpad solution doesn't
work, looking at the records may be the only way to find the problem.

Hi Jordy,

Do you happen to be using the mouse at all? LibreOffice hangs for me,
particularly when I move the mouse over things like the toolbar. If I leave
the mouse alone, it behaves.

I'm sure there's an issue for it, but I can't put my finger on it just now.

Regards

Quentin.

The problem is: when I try to use LibreOffice, it crashes all the time. I
can type about four sentences, and then, nothing responds anymore, and after
a while, the message: “LibreOffice is not responding.”
What’s the problem here, and how can I solve it? I tried to use Apache
OpenOffice.org, that haven’t given any troubles yet, but I like the way of

Thanks in advance.
Kind regards, Jordy.

Re: Windows 10: Notifications Repeating Themselves

Hi,

I have it:

http://www.josephsl.net/files/bin/nvda_2016.4.exe

You say this happens in 2017.1? What about 2016.4? If it does not happen with 2016.4, chances are that something might have been introduced in 2017.1 that’s causing this problem, and the most likely explanation might be a commit that became part of a February 2017 master snapshot.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: Apple WWDC Keynote

Alexander Masic

Hi. I'M not believe this is something wich belong to this list, however i will reply anyway.

You are only able to watch WWDC in PC by using EDGE. If you dont't have Edge, you must follow it on other platforms. I know... The keynot have already been, however you can stil watch it, and there is also other stuff, for instans accessibility sesion wich still havebn't been and intresteed for us.

Grease Monkey doesn't give you access to many more Flash objects.  Those that you do get access to, you can get access to without using Grease Monkey by using a JAWS demo and Internet Explorer or perhaps by using NVDA and Internet Explorer.  It's been two or more years since I experimented with this.  I found one Flash object that wouldn't work with Grease Monkey installed that worked before when it wasn't installed and I was using firefox.

Re: Windows 10: Notifications Repeating Themselves

Hi all,
To expand upon my last point regarding specs and practices walking a
parallel road: UI Automation is intended to fill the gap in MSAA and present
an updated view of how controls work. Unfortunately, I and other NVDA
developers have encountered numerous issues where paper says one thing and
code says something else, and in worst cases, we've seen badly formed UIA
implementations to a point where we had to resort to MSAA (Microsoft Office
apps are prime example of this problem). At other times, the UI Automation
tree was in such a bad state that we had to write workaround hacks (not
ideal, but we resort to this in some cases), and the most recent case was
suppressing "web content" announcement in Edge (caused by yet another badly
pruned UIA tree in Microsoft Edge). Half of my Windows 10 App Essentials
add-on code is devoted to UIA workarounds in Windows 10 itself as well as in
various apps, and for one or two cases, fixing the UIA issue means
introducing bugs in NVDA (a prime example being the fact that modern
Calculator repeats whatever you've entered). I can go on all day and talk
about UIA adventures, but I'll stop here, as we have a serious issue to
tackle regarding toast announcements.
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi,
How about those running 2016.4 (if anyone is running that one at the
moment)? If this is the same in that version, chances are that we're dealing
with yet another one of those odd and confusing UI Automation problem where
the specifications and the practices are walking a parallel road (i.e.
feedback on implementation issues is in order).

Hi
Actually, I don't want to replace review mode and object nevigation.
Also, this add-on is good for braille users. in the past, user needs to use object navigation to read dialog message in braille. Now, just press NVDA+ctrl+w and press arrows to read.
Thank you for the development.
