Re: removing a OneCore mobile voice?

I do not know if there's a way to remove only the voice package,

but definitely you can just remove entirely a particular language from the list of languages added on settings, time and language.

Re: Which Python version, for NVDA?

Igor Kaplan

Hi David,

Actually Python is a very easy language to pick up, if you have an experience with other programming languages you will pick up Python in no time. Also Python is very fun language to program with!
There a lot of tutorials for Python programming, I found quite many just giving "python tutorial" search under Google, for example:
https://www.tutorialspoint.com/python/
https://www.learnpython.org/
http://www.python-course.eu/course.php

Just one thing, it is better to make sure, tutorial covers python 2.7 and not 3.x. There are quite big differences between 2.7 and 3.x and I think, NVDA supports 2.7 only.

Fill free to ask, if you have any Python-related questions.

Good luck!

Igor.

Subject: [nvda] Which Python version, for NVDA?

Listers,
I do realize this might be out of scope for this very list, but still hoped someone could give me a pound of feedback on the matter.

I am one of the long-time Window-Eyes users, that currently are left in the bewildered state of choosing a new screen reader, with all that includes for decision-making. I further have been contributing with apps (or what you typically will be naming add-ons) under Window-eyes. For one thing, I am the author of the Extended Dictionary - which became quite popular under the WinEyes screen reader.

Further, I have been programming under a few environments, for a number of years. Now's time to move on, and learn something new. Either I will have to transmit to Jaws, and learn their scripting environment. Or, I will have to go into NVDA, and learn to build and modify code for that screen reader, if I want to continue taking control on the higher level, of what is being presented to my ears.

If I am correct in my received information, NVDA is being developed under Python; one of the programming languages I have not really had any experience with so far. I did some searching on the net, for any good general tutorials or books, for Python programming. In one of these, I learned that there seems to co-exist several versions of the Python language, and that it is important to have the right one installed, even if it is not necessarily the newest. I am not in a position to know to what extent such info is correct. But could someone at least tell me the
following:

Which Python version should I get installed, and where is the best place to get it? Obviously, I am running Windows, 7Pro.

Is there any tutorial, that you might suggest, for a newbie under the Python? That is, I do have long-time programming experience, but is totally new to the Python language.

It has been my understanding, that there would be an attempt to create a tutorial for developing stuff for the NVDA screen reader. If this is correct, where can I find such material?

Again, obviously, what I am looking for, is something that will take me from the very basics, and onward - in such a simple way that it is possible for self-education. And no, I do not have anything more than 24 hours in my day, so great if things are accompanied with some easy to follow sample codes. Smiles.

Thanks to all who might point me on the road. :)

Re: NVDA and Firefox

Cearbhall O'Meadhra

Hi,

I am really delighted with NVDA! It is so easy to use and manages almost every situation that I meet. Well done to all involved in the development team!

I normally use Firefox to browse the web and so I am using NVDA v. 2017.2with Firefox version 53.0.3. Normally I have no problems with this combination. Lately, however, I have begun to read lengthy PDF reports which linked to a web page that I am working from. The page title shows that The PDF documents is being reading in Firefox itself. They are not in Adobe anyway. As NVDA gets closer to the bottom of the page, I notice that the sentences get interrupted and I have to move up-arrow to the previous recognisable point to pick up the flow of the text again. I tried to compare this behaviour with JAWS 16 but JAWS did not seem to be able to manage anything in Firefox.

I then opened the same link in Ms. Edge, still using NVDA, and was able to read the full document. Here the "overlapping" effect was not present and I read the PDF file perfectly.

Has anyone else noticed this effect in Firefox with PDF files? Is there any reading command that would handle the file differently so that I don't lose track like this?

IF the technical team are interested, I would be happy to put on the log to track the behaviour to see if there is something that needs to be done inside NVDA.

All the best,

Cearbhall

More on Jarte 6.1

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

I had to completely uninstall the previous version to get the update to work. It seems that if Jarte has been run and terminated, it can leave the exe file of the old version set as in use when in fact it is not.
Do a total uninstall, then restart the computer, then install the new version and that fixes the problem it seems.
At least on Windows7 64 pro I have here.

The thing is though that nvda has a history of repeating stuff. Even now, quite often, say in Firefox, the first thing spoken on a web site if a new instance of Firefox opens is repeated three times.

I suspect that the main issue is that nothing is keeping track of events like this or maybe its only a loose watch in case there really are several occurrences of that for other reasons.

Just saying.

Since NV Access's position seems to be that this repeated notification announcement is microsoft's problem and that they thus will not/cannot do anything about it, I am wondering if a workaround could be implemented.
How difficult would it be to write an addon to keep track of notifications and, if the same notification gets sent more than twice in an arbitrary time period (say 500 milliseconds) halt it. That way, we only hear a notification just once.

Re: Which Python version, for NVDA?

Hi David,
Python: you'll need Python 2.7, which can be downloaded from python.org.
As for concepts you need: if you know languages such as C, C++, Java and friends and can explain what classes and modules are, then you're all set to go. The difference would be how concepts are expressed in Python syntax.
For writing add-ons: yes, I'm the one who wrote the add-on development guide at:
https://github.com/nvdaaddons/DevGuide/wiki/NVDA-Add-on-Development-Guide
As for your Window-Eyes apps: if you give us permission, I and other add-on writers will guide you through converting your Window-Eyes apps into an NVDA add-on.
Cheers,
Joseph

Re: More On Repeated Toast Announcement

Hi,
Actually, I can reproduce this in Skype somewhat, but it depends on how long
one has been using various universal apps and what apps are opened. I got
mixed reports when I asked for comments from those still using Version 1607
(Anniversary Update) in hopes of isolating this problem further. I'm also
looking into whether I can reproduce this on latest Insider Preview build.
Cheers,
Joseph

Many other people have brought this up since I first posted last week.
Probably the easiest way to reproduce this is to install the app I mentioned
in my first posting on this issue, Pop Peeper:
http://www.esumsoft.com/products/pop-peeper/
I use this as an example because, if you are like most of us, you receive a
lot of emails. This program will notify you of each email received, and you
won't have to wait long for toast announcements to happen once installed.
Once the program is installed, add your account. Go into the program
options and check the box that says "Display Tray Icon Balloon Tip"
Let it run for a while. Do your normal computing thing. As you receive new
email and as more apps are opened and closed on your computer, you will
begin to see repeated toast announcements.
This has nothing to do with the app mentioned here; I talked to the
developer with whom I have been working out some other bugs in the app, and
he could not reproduce this with narrator. In addition, as a reminder,
people have also noticed this occuring with programs such as skype. I do not
have an active skype list, so I can't reproduce this behavior in that
program.

Re: More On Repeated Toast Announcement

Hi,
Yes and no. Yes, I can write a workaround in WinTenApps, and no, a future
Windows 10 release may or may not fix this. We also need a concrete way to
reproduce this so folks can write workarounds or send a feedback to
Microsoft. I promise once again: I'll personally look into this, as I'm the
one who brought you toast notification announcements in Windows 10 in 2015.
Cheers,
Joseph

Since NV Access's position seems to be that this repeated notification
announcement is microsoft's problem and that they thus will not/cannot do
anything about it, I am wondering if a workaround could be implemented.
How difficult would it be to write an addon to keep track of notifications
and, if the same notification gets sent more than twice in an arbitrary time
period (say 500 milliseconds) halt it. That way, we only hear a notification
just once.

Re: Multiple address in carbon copy in Thunderbird

Ron Canazzi

Hi Robert,

You should display your contacts list in the message window for an open message. You do this by opening a new message and making sure that the contacts side bar is checked under the view menu. If it is not, you check it or press F9 which is the hot key.

Once you do this and you open a new message, you can shift tab several times until you see your contacts list. You then move over the list and press alt + B for the BCC field and alt + C for the CC field. Alt + A will place addresses in the To field. When you have selected all your address you wish to CC or BCC, then tab forward to the subject and body as normal.

Just curious if anyone here tried to send multiple addresses to Thunderbird instead of going by one by one to field specially in the carbon copy, and plus is there a way to appeared the carbon copy if you going to send email. I appreciate your advice.

Hi everyone,

I'm sending this message as the owner of the NVDA add-ons list hosted at
Freelists:

For several days, whenever I and others try to send a message to NvDA
add-ons list hosted at Freelists, we get delivery failure notices. This,
along with bouncing problem, leads me to believe that we need to initiate an
emergency list migration. Thus the Freelists list is in lockdown mode until
further notice.

Cheers,

Joseph

nvda freezes on websites with latest snapshot

Josh Kennedy

on websites I could be just reading articles or doing stuf in firefox and nvda will just freeze up then unfreeze in 20 or so seconds. Can the developers fix this? Here attached is a detailed log.
