Re: touch screen laptop

Hi,

Actually, temporarily disabling touch support is possible but it requires some careful considerations. I’ll do something about it once I get my new ThinkPad in my lab (home).

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Don,

I don't think there is an easy way to do what you want.  You could disable individual touch gestures from the Input gestures dialog (Press NVDA+n, then p, then up arrow to "input gestures") - from there find the gesture in the tree view to disable.  Ideally you could save this as a specific configuration profile so you could easily then revert between having the touch gestures available or not.

You could also file an issue on our GitHub page: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: Help moving between header and footer sections

Quentin Christensen

Hi Kara,

My apologies, I should have more clearly advised what NVDA reads.  It does move from left aligned, to centre aligned, to right aligned, but when you press TAB it does read as if it's moved by tab stop.  On my A4 document with Normal margins for instance, when I press tab, it reads 10.5 centimetres (the middle of the 21cm wide page) and then 18.5cm (the right margin of the page).

It's a bit tricky, as it identifies as "Align default".

You can use CONTROL+L, CONTROL+E and CONTROL+R to change alignment, however that also moves any existing text (so it works as it would on a normal line of the document).

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hi all.

I am currently working my way through NVAccess' excellent MS Word tutorial, and have ran into a problem when editing headers or footers.

Keep in mind I'm using word 2016 as part of my office 365 subscription.

The tutorial says that the tab key moves you from the left section, to the centre then to the right. However, in word 2016 it seems to just insert tab stops.

I remember this work correctly in word 2007, so something must have changed since then.

Does any of you know how to move between the sections now?

All the best

Re: nvda developers and users please help me. about using calc 5.2 and nvda

Quentin Christensen

Hi Nasrin,

I can't comment on what's changed in LibreOffice, but possibly if it's something that only affects older versions of Windows such as Windows XP, they might not have originally tested on XP and so didn't notice.  It's good that they've fixed it for 5.4, but yes, it does mean you need to make the decision about whether to update to that beta version or not.

Did you mention earlier that you like the older version for Calc but it doesn't work with some of your (word processor) documents?  Maybe it would be worth looking at Jarte in the meantime?  http://www.jarte.com/ it's a stand alone word processor.

Also, don't forget for reading particular, you might be able to open files in WordPad which comes with Windows.  You won't be able to save Word documents, only RTF files in WordPad though.  Just trying to think of some options for you.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: soft voice

Travis Siegel <tsiegel@...>

It just works, select synthesizer, and it should show up as one of the choices. After that, you can switch to the voices, and go through the various options. Some of the voices don't sound too bad, but I'm having some audio artifacts (almost like microphone feedback), so it isn't something I can use on a regular basis, but the voices themselves aren't all that bad though they're not really the kind of thing I'd use given a choice, with the exception of possible 1 or 2 of them, but since those audio artifacts exist, I can't really play with it for normal usage, so I think I have to assign this one to the research bucket and be done with it. :)

Subject: [nvda] Outlook Mail Problem

Dear All,

I am using Windows 10 and Outlook in Office 2016. I have generally been able to work with Outlook Mail reasonably well. However, recently a problem has arisen that I can't seem to resolve. One of my email accounts is a Microsoft exchange account. When I first set it up, NVDA navigated through these folders in the same way as other folders. Then, I needed to delete this account and then set it up again. This was for reasons relating to the Office 365 that our company uses. In other words, setting up this account anew had nothing to do with the Outlook installed on my computer. Since doing this, however, my navigating through the mail list has gone wacky:

1. I cannot navigate from one message to another using up and down arrows.
The only way to move through the list is by using ctrl + up or down arrows.
2. When I delete a message I get jumped down to a message of about a week ago.
3. When I send out a message NVDA does not go to the next message, but to the folder.

All of the folders not associated with the exchange account continue to work normally and show no problems.

Warmly,
Ralph

I have done that before with no problem so long as you regularly do disk cleanup including the option to cleanup system files too. That way you get rid of any windows.old files on the internal drive because they can take up around 20GB of drive space just by themselves.

libre office enhancements addon?

Josh Kennedy

hi

I know that microsoft word and NVDA or I should say microsoft office apps and NVDA work good together. you can read charts and graphs in excel, you can use browse mode, read comments, and much more. But it seems like libreoffice is lagging behind as far as libreoffice enhanced features. So that folks don't have to pay for microsoft office if they don't want to. if libreoffice does not read charts with NVDA, does not have browse mode ability, reading comments, basically it would be nice if the feature set that we see and have in microsoft office for NVDA should also transfer over and be available in the free libreoffice as well. If someone could make an addon which will bring all the nice ms-office enhancements into libreoffice for NVDA this would be useful for me and others who cannot afford ms-office.

thanks

Hi Anthony

It does not matter if the command is written Control NVDA s or NVDA Control s because it is exactly the same command.  You should be pressing and holding down the NVDA and control keys and whilst doing so, press the s key.  You may also see the command written as NVDA+Control+s, which better illustrates the command is a combination of the 3 keys.  Because the NVDA and Control keys are modifier keys, you can hold them down then press s rather than trying to press all 3 simultaneously.  Modifier keys send additional information from the keyboard to the computer when combined with a standard key, in this case the letter s.  NVDA is running on the computer, identifies that the keypress code you have typed contains the NVDA modifier key code so knows it needs to be processed by the NVDA program

As for the punctuation that is spoken, it depends on how you are reading the tutorial.  If you are arrowing character by character, it will read all punctuation.  If you open the NVDA voice dialog by pressing NVDA+Control+v, tab to the Punctuation symbol level combo box, set it to none and press enter.  This will eliminate the voicing of punctuation when reading line by line using the down arrow and using the ‘Say All’ command (NVDA+Down Arrow).

Do you understand that all commands such as control NVDA key s and Control NVDA key v are used without going into the menus?  You can get to the same settings in the menus but such commands are shortcuts that bypass the menus.  You can use them anywhere.  You aren't in NVDA when you use them.  You could be on the desktop, in a program, almost anywhere.

In the menus, you would get to such settings by opening the menus, then down arrowing to preferences and pressing enter.  Then down arrow to either synthesizer and press enter or voice settings and press enter.  It sounds as though you would save yourself a lot of time and trouble by working with a good NVDA tutorial such as the one I sent a link to a number of days ago.

Hi, Chris,

That's wild! I don't know what made the insert key work correctly but I'm
glad it's fine now.

Hello guys.

You're not going to believe this one!

I woke up this morning, started up nvda, and all of a sudden, my insert key
on the numpad started working correctly. Would you believe it.

I wonder what in the world caused it to all of a sudden start working?

Does anyone happen to know?

This is just getting more weird by the minute!

Thanks.

Chris.

Help moving between header and footer sections

Kara Goldfinch <kara.louise18@...>
