Most issues I find are in the junk folders. I have had many experiences where the systems are shared. This can happen in large organisations such as universities where a virus is hard to keep off a huge system. Every summester, each unit is reformatted and restored, between these, its your own beef. And flash drives all over the place are a big issue. A simple worm infected several computers in my brothers student group including our main system. Fortunately the vbs file titled m was easy to get off startup, easy to end and easy to delete without any antivirus issues and all drives were easy to get rid off. However it loaded malware which mangled program installs and had to be pulled with hijack this in addition it deleted all drive pointers which also took some times to fix. On another time a spyware program did the same thing on a computer. Usually a good reformat would have fixed it and usually I would have just reformat but I had 3 days to do it. And after a search I found a program that would fix the issue made by a hacker. Over that, though, I have had a couple sob cases. I had a user that treated her system so badly that even after I repaired things she still managed to foul it up so much that I simply just did a reformat and gave it back to her afterward and said, I don't want any cash for this, but no more contracts for you sorry. Another system I got that was new was so infected, I simply skipped backup and just reformat. Another box had a virus, but the user over reacted, and loaded 30 security programs and scanners and addons and other stuff of each type and brought a lot of extra stuff. It ended with me removing everything and loading something that worked. Lately I have had units that have just run till replacement. The latest units will need checking in 6 months time but are likely not to need any real work since they have 10, its likely all I will need to do is update drivers, some software plugins maybe 4 programs maybe 5 installers, and clear junk. Both these took 2 hours each to setup so I could be done within 30minutes to 1 hour for both or less and thats the way it should be.

Probably not (don't turn off User Account Control, although I must stress that users should also be careful when it comes to running programs, visiting sites and so on). The user interface for UAC on Vista is slightly different than that of later versions. Vista will be supported until next April, and you need to have Service Pack 2 and a specific update in order to install NVDA. Cheers, Joseph

Right, one thing is that unless its official I usually take forums as people's opinions. Now don't get me wrong they are great when solving or asking questions but I wouldn't use them for any serious stuff unless there is official things. Its fine at home but when you do work on remotes and a few other things, you kinda don't want to rumble round with patch hacks, patchcracks or any other bridged flimsys for to long. Not saying that in the beginning I didn't do this when I had the chance but its never good to keep it that way all the time.

One of the points I hadn't given much thought is not closing down what appear to be malicious windows using the red X at the upper right corner. This is something a screen reader user wouldn't likely have to consider often, since most I know will use ALT+F4 to close a window, but it is an interesting point that even the normal way of dismissing a window via mouse pointer can be used as the entry point for malicious software.

You have 2 years after that on 7. And after that another 2 on 8.1 Windows 10 expires a year or so after that. So it says currently.

Hi, Do you want to block this person. I haven't done this on the gmail site. I heard a friend tell me you can delete his messages off the server. I don’t know how to do it myself. I use Gmail and from time to time I go get rid of old messages on the site.

Hi there: Do you have all your vista windows updates? How old is your laptop? If it’s a 2008 or 9 build I don’t know if it makes a difference. I wonder if Microsoft is not supporting vista no more. You may have to upgrade it to 7. I had a friend who still has her vista laptop. She got it in 2008 just before new years. Her computer goo roo updated it to 7. It runs better. Just a thought. If your vista laptop can handle 7 then you may have to upgrade to 7.

I recently downloaded NVDA and attempted to run the install. The install program did not run. I attempted again but it still did not run. This laptop is running Windows Vista. I have installed other programs from this account.
Any suggestions on what I can do to install NVDA?
Thanks, Paul on behalf of Jessica

I like music and think of becoming a DJ. My problem is that the well known application used by sighted guys is screen reader inaccessible. I am particularly talking about virtual DJ. Does anyone know of this application and has ever used it with a screen reader? I find it difficult to use with nvda and jaws. Do you know of any application I can use that is doing nearly the same thing as virtual DJ? Come to my rescue. Wally

Re: How do I check a check box?
Erik, I forgot to say, but should have, that this does not appear to be an issue with NVDA, nor even with Open Office, per se. There are just too many layers of conversion going on from the original source and something is getting lost in the conversion before you ever start working with the thing in Open Office. Brian

Re: How do I check a check box?
Erik, I have the same version of Open Office and, interestingly, I just had a crash while trying to play around with this form. I can replicate the crash if I tab beyond the "end" of the form trying to jump to the next (and non-existent, in this case) fillable item. The above being noted, the form itself probably has accessibility issues. I have not used "fillable forms" in Open Office but have in MS-Office and, based on what you've supplied, this thing appears to be a form template but not set up that the end user can only enter data in specific form fields. Some of what you've filled in shows up in advance of the text boxes that I presume the developer probably thought you'd be landing in and then typing in. There is only one checkbox, at the bottom of page two, and even when I click on it with the mouse the object itself is not announced (making me believe there's no alternate text that describes its purpose) nor do I get any feedback from NVDA when I check or uncheck directly with the mouse. I took it upon myself to "go to the source" and this form downloads as an MS-Word document. When opened under MS-Word it behaves as I'd expect - a template with fillable fields and those fields are the only thing you can touch. It's still horrible from an accessibility standpoint because the fields do not have any descriptive text associated with them to tell you what you've landed in and the checkbox is the same. Checkbox is announced but the question would be, "Checkbox for what?" If I open the MS-Word document under Open Office or Libre Office, even retaining that format and not converting to ODT format, neither behaves at all well with this form. They both go back to treating it as if the whole document should be editable rather than traversing just the form fields and letting you fill them in. I'm sorry that this is what I have to report. Given "the source" of this form it would be entirely legitimate to complain loudly that the form itself, in MS-Word, is not accessible in its native format. They need to add at least descriptive text, if not that and help text, to the various form fields so that anyone accessing it with Word and a screen reader can have a clue as to what they're expected to be filling in when they land on a given field or are checking to indicate on a checkbox. I doubt you'll get any traction as far as compatibility with OpenOffice or LibreOffice. Organizations don't, and can't, create electronic forms for every conceivable office suite. That being said, if they wanted to be more "universal" about it they should be using fillable PDFs, which are supported under Adobe Reader and can be saved after being filled in. Brian

There is a known issue with the NVDA installer and Windows Vista. The solution is usually to make sure that all updates from Windows Update are installed before attempting to install NVDA. Hope that helps.

Re: Good Browsing Hygiene, was: Kaspersky antivirus, how accessible?
These days, with the exception of the Clamwin open-source antivirus, I don't know of a single antivirus or internet security product that does not do "on access" scanning for downloads. Windows Defender, the built-in that comes with Windows 8 and 10, does that. I have AVG, and Panda Cloud on two other machines in the house and they do that. Avast did that. You can even get an open-source add-on for Clamwin called Clam Sentinel and then Clam Sentinel does that job. The timing can be different, though. Most that I'm aware of will scan anything you attempt to download from the internet when you attempt to download it. When it comes to e-mail most do something similar at download time, while there were a few products that did the scanning when you attempted to open a message or specific attachment. The latter is becoming the exception rather than the rule these days. When it comes to web filtering and security suites the default settings differ. When I took a look at the Sophos home page their statement, "With just a few clicks, block access to sites that may contain inappropriate content or malicious software," suggests that you have to turn this feature on. I've always done something similar with a product named Spywareblaster. Shared computers, particularly those shared with, shall we say, "less sophisticated" users tend to need a bit more cyber armor than those used by a single user who consistently practices good computing hygiene. There is no "one size fits all" though there's a wide "one size fits most" style of setup. Brian

1. is user account control turned on? if so, does it come up? 2. what anti-virus program do you have? it maybe be blocking the download or the running of the file. for example, if you have internet explorer and smart screen filter is on, it will likely prevent the file from opening unless you explicitly allow it. does the installer come up? if not, what happens when you try and run the file. write privately if you want. btw, on vista, anything less than service pack 2 will give you odd results I suspect.
