There was one addon that I wasn't able to find. do you have a link to
the addon Say Product Name and Version ? For some reason I wasn't able
to find it myself.
My allergies are making my brain stupid....

For some reason, the name of that add on did not get pasted under Number

Pascal, you are so welcome. I personally use all of these add ons all of the

They greatly enhance the NVDA experience, and they allow you to do so much

I wanted to give these awesome NVDA add on developers some input concerning

Travis Siegel <tsiegel@...>

The whole point of the vlc add-on is to make vlc as accessible as it can be. There's nothing wrong with plugins when they serve a useful purpose (which nearly all of them do). Vlc is pretty usable without the plugin, but the plugin does add access to a few controls that are otherwise unreachable or unlabeled. I use vlc all the time, and have no issues with NVDA and the VLC plugin.

Well you can do a pc reset each install, but you can also manually kill the junk that is left over without any issue.

Re: My Favorite NVDA add ons and Why!

Well I am happy I pulled out of jaws when I did.

I do keep a coppy of old dolphin screen reader round for a few things which use the virtual nav mode a bit better.

However that and their easy reader app is just about all I keep running these days.

Its got to the point that when I go to win10 And maybe every 5 or so years I will just update the apps, easyreader is only 100 dollars for full version so the update maybe less than that.

the dolphin stuff is 1k and thats it.

Just about everything else uses mainstream tech.

abbyy handles ocr.

I have a semi accessible to a point video conversion system, an old now but functional media player, java, a lot of codecs and tools like ccleaner, 7zip, goldwave and cdbxp.

Before that I invested in expensive or cracked cd writers, antivirus programs and actual vi related scanning solutions.

What probably saved me from a life of jaws was that I quit the system quite quickly.

When I left uni with no prospect of jobs I eventually went to 7, and 99.9% of all that software I was funded just went out the window.

I couldn't afford k1000, I stopped using a scanner for a while.

With nvda I couldn't really afford jaws so yeah, I got out on my own.

If I stayed in work I'd still be shelling out for jaws now.

I'm sure there is a way to delete them without using Windows cleanup.  You don't have to reformat just to get rid of such folders. Have you tried deleting them using Windows Explorer?  If that doesn't work, there are utilities that allow files to be deleted that are being kept from doing so by the operating system showing them as in use when they aren't.

Others may have more information.

Hello:

The windows.old directories will not go away no matter how I try to
get rid of them with disk cleanup!

Disk cleanup sees them and the check box is checked for deleting.
However! Disk cleanup seems to be unable/unwilling to delete them!

I currently have four windows.old on the root directory. That is
why I may need to do a fresh/clean install of any windows OS and for
that there needs to be a disk reformat!

Hi all,

I use NVDA 30 percent more, because of these add ons.

Here are my favorite add ons, and I explain why!

Here is the list!

NVDA add ons I love the most and why.

I want to share with all of you, which add ons really impress me the most,
and the ones I am getting the most use out of by using them.

Number One:

Clip Contents Designer; Status: running; Version: 3.5; Author: Noelia Ruiz
Martínez <nrm1977@gmail.com>

I very often want to copy some material, and append more material to the
clipboard. I do this a lot to edit and create tutorials.

I love this add on, and it helps me a lot. Thank you!

Number two:

Clipspeak; Status: running; Version: 1.0; Author: Damien Sykes-Lindley
<damien@dcpendleton.plus.com> 2 of 17

It gives me such peace of mind to hear what I have on the clip board, before

I paste it somewhere. Thank you!

Number three:

Enhanced Aria; Status: running; Version: 1.3-dev; Author: Jose Manuel
Delicado <jmdaweb@hotmail.com>

I can now use two great TV web sites to stream movies and TV shows, because

this add on lets me access the ARIA That I need to enjoy these streaming web

sites. Thank you!

Number four:

Golden Cursor moves the mouse with the keyboard; Status: running; Version:
1.0-dev; Author: Salah Atair <atair1978@gmail.com>, Wafeeq Taher 5 of 17

I want all to know how much I use this add on. Here is an example.

My wife will move the mouse pointer to a place that I cannot find. I can
then press a command to hear what pixel position the mouse pointer is on. I

can save that pixel position, and my wife never has to put the mouse pointer

there again. I just press a command, and it brings up all saved mouse
pointer positions that I have saved. I label my saved pixel positions, like

fast forward in Groove, for example. I can open the list of saved pixel
positions, and arrow to that Groove button, and press enter, and the actual

mouse pointer goes right there.

Sometimes, you cannot get the mouse pointer to route to where the review
cursor is located, and with one time of sighted assistance, you can save the

pixel position where the sighted person put the mouse pointer, and you can
go back there yourself from then on. Thank you very much, and I pray you
keep developing and supporting this add on!

Number five:

Lambda math editor addon; Status: running; Version: 1.1.8-dev; Author:
Alberto Zanella <lapostadialberto@gmail.com> 6 of 17

This add on, has allowed me to tutor highr math concepts on my on line math

read the other person's work when they send it back to me. Thank you!

Number six:

Place markers; Status: running; Version: 8.1-dev; Author: Noelia
<nrm1977@gmail.com>, Chris <llajta2012@gmail.com> 7 of 17

This add on has saved me so much time every day. Many times a day, I put a
place marker somewhere that I will return to later. This is the place marker

feature in JAWS. Thank you! This saves me a lot of time.

Number Seven

I absolutely love this add on. Many times, I am in a program when I want to

here the version of the application. I really missed doing thiswith JAWS.
Now, I can use this feature with NVDA. Thank you!

Number Eight:

Speak Passwords; Status: running; Version: 1.0; Author: Tyler Spivey

Number Nine:

Author: [u'Tyler Spivey', u'James Scholes'] 11 of 17

I love this add on. I am using it as I type this article. I down arrow
through my add ons, and I just press F12 to paste what NVDA said to the clip

board. Again, this is the speach history in JAWS. These add ons are allowing

us to use NVDA and get these JAWS features. Thank you!

Number Ten:

Insert Symbols; Status: running; Version: 1.0; Author: Erion
<rob.mail@freemail.hu> 12 of 17

I can insert hundreds of symbols in a document, Facebook post, or email,
that I never had to choose from with JAWS. There are so many symbols that
you can choose from, I have not heard of many of them. I absolutely love
this add on! Thank you!

on! Thank you!

VLC Media Player; Status: running; Version: 1.2; Author: Javi Dominguez
<fjavids@gmail.com> 14 of 17

I love using VLC Media Player. This add on, allows me to tab and hear many
of the controls on the screen, and I have access to the repeat and shuffle
toggles. Thank you!

Weather Plus; Status: running; Version: 4.4 15.06.2017; Author: Adriano
Barbieri <adrianobarb@yahoo.it>. 15 of 17

I really love this weather add on. I use it constantly. My wife asks me
about the weather. and I simply press NVDA+Shift+W and get the forcast. What

I like most, is that it is copied to the clipboard, and I can paste the
entire forecast into a text document like Note Pad.

I love this add on, because I have many cities that I can find out the
weather in. Thank you so much!

Number Twelve

Windows 10 App Essentials; Status: running; Version: 20170705-dev; Author:
Joseph Lee <joseph.lee22590@gmail.com>, Derek Riemer

Thank you!

I use the Windows 10 calculator all of the time. I do scientific
calculations with it many times a day. This add on has really helped me a
lot. Thank You!

This is it!

The summary, is that many features of JAWS are in these add ons. NVDA is
much more powerful with these add ons, and I appreciate all of your time and

work to make these add ons, and do all that you do for the NVDA community. I

now use NVDA 90 percent of the time, because of these add ons. They have
really made a difference, and I want you all to know!

As already mentioned the way to go for formatting the system partition
is to boot into the the talking wpe.
You can also start the installation process from WPE.
I've moved to W10 now and I recently did a fresh/clean install only
using the W10 boot media.
Microsoft made the installation process fully accessible as of W10
creators update released april of this year.
I used the windows media creation tool to download windows 10 and
create a bootable usb flash disk.
I then rebooted my machine and brought up the boot menu and booted from usb.
I waited a bit to be sure Windows 10 setup where loaded on the usb
disk and I then pressed ctrl + windows + enter to start narrator.
I then deleted all partitions on my laptop containing my old w8.1
installation and recovery and created my own partition scheme and
installed a fresh copy of w10.
The laptop rebooted once and I then pressed ctrl + windows + enter
again to complete setup.
A very well done job by Microsoft making the install accessible - even
on a blank hard drive.

How can a totally blind person format a hard disk without sighted

I would like to be able to install windows on a freshly formatted

For some unknown reason when installing a new version of windows
it will always leave old junk behind! And, it does not matter if you use
disk cleanup to clean out unwanted leftover files. When you use any file
explorer to look at the root directory you will see that old junk which
should have been cleaned is still there!

Thank You! For all your helpful suggestions!!!

but many people do not use script or even dont know how to make script for jaws.
i heard that making script is more simple than creating addon for nvda.
because making addon for nvda require knowing python language, but
making script for jaws dont.
i did not say the people who use addon are wrong!
they want to use and one person like me can use only install file of
nvda without addons.

On 7/8/17, Travis Siegel <tsiegel@softcon.com> wrote:
And besides, I have to completely disagree that jaws doesn't require

does) you're using the equivalent of an NVDA add-on.

So, saying you won't use add-ons isn't doing you (or us) any favors,
since you're going to keep asking here to accomplish things, then
disregard said information because it will sometimes requie an add-on.

and you have stated that you don't use add ons many times.
I won't write about this again, but I'm writing specifically in

many
of the controls on the screen, and I have access to the repeat and
shuffle
toggles. Thank you!

I really love this weather add on. I use it constantly. My wife
asks me
about the weather. and I simply press NVDA+Shift+W and get the
forcast.
What

I like most, is that it is copied to the clipboard, and I can
paste the
entire forecast into a text document like Note Pad.

I love this add on, because I have many cities that I can find out
the
weather in. Thank you so much!

Hello:

I am using disk cleanup with the run as admin choice on the context menu. However, some things just refuse to go away no matter what I do!

It is as if something locks them and does not let them be removed!

I am the only one on my PC. So, I have the user access control set to zero. And, I keep myself logged in as admin all the time.

Thank You! For your response!

Hello All:

How can a totally blind person format a hard disk without sighted help?

I would like to be able to install windows on a freshly formatted drive.

For some unknown reason when installing a new version of windows it will always leave old junk behind! And, it does not matter if you use disk cleanup to clean out unwanted leftover files. When you use any file explorer to look at the root directory you will see that old junk which should have been cleaned is still there!

Thank You! For all your helpful suggestions!!!

Have you considered a talking windows PE?  p e stands for preinstallation environment.  The ones I use can be found here:
There are environments for windows 7 and 10; 32 and 64 bit versions.
The installers create an image that can be burned onto a dvd or they create a bootable image on USB device such as a flash drive and therein lies the possible difficulty.  You may or may not need sighted assistance to get your computer to boot from a dvd or usb device.
Many computers have a key you can press repeatedly right after powerup that puts you into a boot menu.  Use the up and down arrows to highlight the boot device you want and press enter.  The boot menu does not talk, of course. If you don’t have sighted help, you will have to try each item in turn until you find the one you need.
The computers with boot menus that I’ve used have all booted to windows if I choose a boot option that is not available or does not contain a bootable image.

I freely admit that the number of computers I’ve worked on is a miniscule subset of all the computers in the world so proceed at your own risk.

If your computer doesn’t have a boot menu, you will have to change the boot order in the bios or UeFI.  You will almost certainly need assistance to do that.

When you boot into the preinstallation environment, you will be in a stripped-down version of windows.  If you use the PEs that I do, NVDA will load and speak with the default Espeak voice.  There are lots of useful tools on that windows desktop including two partition managers that will allow you to select a drive and partition and format that partition.

But it’s even easier than that.  Everything you need for speech is on a ramdrive.  You can insert a windows installation disk and start the new install with speech.

I will not post further on this thread as it is off topic for this list.  Feel free to write me off list and I’ll do my best to answer your questions.  Better yet, subscribe to the techtalk list on groups.io techtalk+subscribe@groups.io for all the help you’ll need.  The list owner created these PEs and can answer all your questions.

Don't do these things.

Every machine should (at minimum) have two accounts, one admin account used for installing software, and one normal everyday account that is a regular user with no admin privs that is used for your day to day computing, because then since there is no admin access, if a box pops up asking you for your admin credentials, and you didn't do anything to envoke said dialog, then you can be pretty sure something is trying to access your machine that shouldn't be doing so. Most times, simply canceling the admin login dialog at that point will keep your system safe, but at least then you know you need to take a look at your system and see what's going on.

It's extremely bad computing practice to run with admin accounts and UAC turned off, you really should change this as soon as is practical.

Amen, amen, amen!!

However, only when in that precise combination.  With UAC not turned off I am far less worried about running using an account with admin privileges because you still get prompted before anything will actually run with them.  The pop-up is not significantly different than if you have a standard account, but you can either allow or block without having to enter an admin username and password.

I have been running under an admin account on every Windows machine I use for decades now because I have need to install/uninstall software and do other tweaks far too frequently to be bothered with getting the full "enter username and password" prompt for admin tasks under a standard account.

If you routinely follow even half of the recommendations of quietman7 in his treatise, Best practices for safe computing, and you keep UAC on at default levels the likelihood of getting an infection is very, very, very low.

The above being said, if you are not a user who makes frequent changes to your system it is best practice to have one account with admin privileges used only when you need them and a standard account for your day-to-day computing.  There are just some folks for whom this might not be a good fit - I'm one of them.

I'd like to second Travis's recommendations. For my day-to-day computer tasks, such as reading and answering emails, Web surfing, document composition, etc., I use a standard account with the user account control at its highest setting. When I want to perform computer maintenance, I log onto my admin account. This doesn't guarantee I won't get hit with anything but I try to do all that I can do to minimize the risk.

Re: My Favorite NVDA add ons and Why!

Travis Siegel <tsiegel@...>

And besides, I have to completely disagree that jaws doesn't require add-ons.  Everytime you use a script in jaws (which nearly every program does) you're using the equivalent of an NVDA add-on.

So, saying you won't use add-ons isn't doing you (or us) any favors, since you're going to keep asking here to accomplish things, then disregard said information because it will sometimes requie an add-on.

On 7/8/2017 9:44 AM, Gene wrote:
Add ons, except for features found in the Windows 10 add on, will almost never be added to NVDA as included features.  You are creating problems and inconveniences for yourself that are entirely of your own making.  You refuse to even try add ons and insist on not using them and you have stated that you don't use add ons many times.

I won't write about this again, but I'm writing specifically in response to your message to try to get you to consider at least trying add ons.  Are the probably thousands of people who use NVDA add ons and who report no problems all wrong?  Doesn't that make you at least wonder if your refusal is logical and makes sense?

i wish that i had these useful addons in nvda installation file by default.
like jaws which does not require any addon.
for me, knowing the version of programs, knowing about copy, peist cut
and also some feature that i can copy all of my desire parts of file
and peist them together i need.
when i copy some part of file, i should peist and again select second
part to copy and peist.

Re: Way Off Topic!!!

I'm not sure what it is called but you should be able to use a pre installation environment, though I don't think that is the name.  You can boot into Windows, not the Windows running on your machine, but into a stripped down version of Windows on the pre installation medium and install windows using the stripped down version.  Windows offers to format the drive as part of installation.  Or, with sighted help, you can install Windows directly and it will offer to format.

As far as I know there is no way to reformat a disc that you are currently using as the boot disc from which you are running Windows.   Way back when you used to be able to open Command Prompt and do a "format C:" and it would work, for some value of work, because it demolished Windows in the process.  There's probably a way to override the protection that does not allow this to be done now, but I wouldn't.

As someone else has already suggested, the only way I know of to achieve your goal is to hook up the disc drive that you'd like to format to another computer as a secondary/external drive and do the format from there.

For myself, a straight install of Windows (whether 10 or earlier) using install media is going to replace anything that needs replacing and is starting afresh, for all practical intents and purposes.   It will not remove things like the recovery partition that's probably on your drive and that was placed there by the computer manufacturer.  If you want to blow all of that away you will definitely need to reformat and repartition the drive.  And if you're doing this on an old drive that had employed MBR and you're installing Windows 8 or Windows 10 you might want to consider using GPT instead.

Re: My Favorite NVDA add ons and Why!

Gene
