Re: Amazon Echo and the app with nvda
Brian's Mail list account
Unfortunately whatever you change it to, like computer is a well used word. It claims it can only be amazon or echo on my instructions.
No my way works well as one does not encounter alexa very often in normal screenreader use apart from the app or nasty people who email me with Alexa set a recurring alarm for 3 AM

Hi there I got an Amazon Echo the other day to make things easier for finding radio stations and other stuff, but I did have issues with the App as the synth every time it read the A word triggered the echo and the change in state was actively updating the app contents as I was trying to use it! I have now decided to do the following I'm going to replace the name that shall not be spoken with the string, The A word in the dictionary so hopefully I can finally get some skills sorted without complete chaos.
I'd advise this for anyone with a device like this. Brian

I thought we had answered that already. It is really up to you. Its not sanctioned by anybody in authority, but I've never heard of any bad ones being up there. I'm sure he takes such steps as needed to check them out if they aware not on the main site. You have to ask this question though. Why are they not on the main site if there is not problem with them? Often this may be because they are quite old or may have been written to get over a certain problem which is not mass market. However it is very easy in any kind of script language, to expose parts of the system to naughty people who want to get at your data, so you really have to make your own mind up at the time if its worth it. Re: using outlook how do you get to find out how many messages are in a folder using NVDA
Interesting! I’ve never used that command before! It tells me that I have 60 unread and 40 in normal view. What does that mean? My usual way to do it is to press the End key alone. This brings me to the last message in the message box. To hear how many there are, I have to listen to the details of the message and its sender , etc., until I finally hear “60 column1”. When I count the messages, I find that there are indeed 60 messages but only 45 are unread not 60 as reported by NVDA+End! Perhaps I should log this in GitHub? As I said, there are utilities that may allow you
to delete the files. Some people boot into Linux to delete files in such
cases. That may be an option as well but you may not want to fool around
with it yourself.
I don't know if there are other options.

Re: Reading footnotes in LibreOffice with NVDA
www.wps.com
I havn't tried this it does a bit more than standard office, document and pdf conversion and a few things.
It seems that from forums a lot of people that switched from ms office line didn't like the direction of libre or open office families and switched to this.
In one case online the software has been reportedly installed all over the place and is not good, however, it was only 1.
I do know from security sites I read thats its been round since 1997 and that it is chinese.
So it is almost as old as modern office office 95 and earlier excluded.

Brian

It still would be good in situations where stuff didn't kill.
Usually with windows.old folders on upgrades thats 10 days for a major update within win10 and a month for an os to os upgrade.
Even with disk cleanup these folders don'
't die but leave them be and they die by themselves.
As for files that can not bee accessed a chkdsk will fix that.
If you still have the issue, I suggest you backup your data as you may be having a hard drive failier or other failier.
When I got these it started as a few corrupted sectors to the drives not working, in fact it left my drive a lot of it corrupted and I had to restore from another fortunately that drive was able to be restored but it was also going bad.
I lost 3 drives in this way and almost lost all my files.

It used to work well in XP and the dire Vista, but not bothered with it since as now drives are so huge that a little bit of wasted space is not really an issue any more. Brian

Disk cleanup sees them and the check box is checked for deleting. However! Disk cleanup seems to be unable/unwilling to delete them!
I currently have four windows.old on the root directory. That is why I may need to do a fresh/clean install of any windows OS and for that there needs to be a disk reformat!

Yes there is a recovery partition which is needed for restoring laptops often use this.
There are ways of backing it up on dvds and or flash media.
I guess you could kill it from disk manager and just restore but once you restore you get the stuff back.

Well windows 10 will usually kill those folders after a bit.
Usually they should go away, however, you can reset easily.
If you do reformat I think windows 10 installer can talk now if you have a usb headset I think or if your soundcard is fine you can probably try plugging things in.
I am not sure if that spreads to pe but even still.
If you are happy with linux and get a simple desktop you could log into that on a live cd mount your hard drive and kill the folders, as long as they are not critical windows will start fine.

To the best of my knowledge the second is not possible without sighted assistance.
