Hi

I just looked to see what it is selling for. it is a very good price at just under 30 us dollars. Will that same app work with your scanner or is it just phones? I have not had a full read of it yet.

I also did a basic tutorial on the store i think it is written and audio but did not buy any thing only just downloaded a free program etc.

The tutorials are if written still a draft the audio one should be right to go. It is more a over view.

If it does my scanner also it is sold.

hi

I would buy knfb, but what is a good document camera to use with knfb reader? scanners are big and bulky and a camera would be faster for scanning books and stuff. I also have knfb on my android phone.

and does it work good with NVDA?

Admittedly, it would be convenient if the Microsoft store allowed for navigation using the virtual cursor. I haven't tried this but I'm wondering if the Objpad addon would make navigating the store a bit easier, or would that introduce a layer of complexity that I'm not considering?

Hi everyone,

The following advisory from the add-ons community is for people using NVDA
next snapshots on Windows 10:

Due to UWP OCR feature introduced in today's next snapshot, please disable
OCR add-on if you are on Windows 10 and using next snapshots. This is
because NVDA+R is now a native NVDA command to recognize text on screen
using a chosen OCR engine.

Hi

Still on the computer in draft format. That is the written one not sure how much more it may or may not need.

The audio one is a walk through etc but can drop box it and also send you the draft that is written.

it will be posted up to the website to the nvda tutorials for windows 10 page  hopefully later on this week. I will also let the list know when it does go up there.

I just noticed there is 2 files but will listen to them both. One could be not worth listening to or it might be the same files with a different name.

The link to the drop box account is https://www.dropbox.com/s/yytdv27045j0rmg/How%20to%20use%20the%20Windows%2010%20store%20with%20the%20NVDA%20screen%20reader.MP3?dl=0

The person will also need to know how to use object navigation or text review on some parts which is covered briefly. I did not buy a app though.

I do not think i can add attachment but will give it a whirl.

This is for the written one so may need to be tided up.

It looks as though you made me spend some money on getting it i read it works with the scanner etc and made my mind up. Does it work perfectly with nvda and screen readers i would say yes.

Joseph,

That's something new I've learned today! I never heard of the "Native Store App" before. I have just opened my windows search and found this is on my PC already. I cannot see how to use it. I put KNFB into the search tool in the app and it failed to find it. Where can I read what to do? Would you like to make a few suggestions?

When the KNFB app initially was on special, Creators update has not yet been released. I'm glad if it has subsequently been fixed. As for NVDA version, I always run the latest snapshots, so the Windows interface must have been the issue at the time.

Works like a dream! KNFB found my canon scanner automatically and without my having to make any configuration changes or do any settings.

Where could I find your tutorial?

Joseph,

That's something new I've learned today! I never heard of the "Native Store App" before. I have just opened my windows search and found this is on my PC already. I cannot see how to use it. I put KNFB into the search tool in the app and it failed to find it. Where can I read what to do? Would you like to make a few suggestions?

Below will be what it said in the log. I am pretty sure it was set to debug when she had the problems but also noticed she only had nvda 2016.3 but even up dating nvda did not do the trick if i remember right. maybe if mark can catch it with the later version of NVDA it might give them some thing to go off.

There is a ticket at https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/2807

Please refer to the comment on how to fix the problem from May 19 about doing it in a command prompt window. They were the steps posted to the nvda audio tutorials page.

So will post it in this email  what was sent to the nvda auddio tutorials page with the same sort of heading under the trouble shooting section.

NVDA says “unknown” or “pane” in all of your browsers, Mozilla Thunderbird email client and other places

If for some reason you have problems with NVDA saying “unknown” or “pane” check for the following symptoms:

·         In all of your browsers, or the Mozilla Thunderbird email client, no matter what you do, you still hear “unknown” or “pane”.

·         In the browser, email client and other menus you notice you cannot get into your menus, or you are unable to use the quick navigation keys

·         When you have been told the page is loaded and notice strange behaviour

·         Mozilla Thunderbird saying unknown while you try to navigate it

·         Your applications key does not work with it being spoken out and other strange behaviour in Windows

·         The running applications icons not being spoken out

It might be a good idea to do the following.

Please note: If you are hearing “unknown” or “pane” (as discussed above) NVDA might seem like it is still working properly but it may not be completely in Windows and other programmes.

You could try the following solution which will allow you to re-register your dll files in case they are causing the problem.

Press the Windows key then type the following into the search box. Type in “command prompt”. Once you have located command prompt, in the search results, press the Applications key to bring up the context menu. Arrow down to select “run as administrator” and press the Enter key. This will take you to a command prompt window. This will not be spoken out. You may need sighted assistance for this.

Type in the following command

for %x in (c:\windows\system32\*.dll) do regsvr32 /s %x

This should re-register all components in the system32 folder.

When it is finished, you can close the command prompt window with the Alt + F4 key. You should notice now where NVDA was saying “unknown” as in some examples given, NVDA should now read the icons in the running applications area of Windows, speak the content of the webpage and menus, and also in Mozilla Thunderbird and other places in Windows including the Windows applications context menu.

it fixed the problem for me.

I do not know what started the problem in the first place. But if you read some of the problems i had and what i tried it will give you a idea.

I did the usual of uninstalling nvda and under the %appdata% section as well. Reinstalled nvda etc.

There is still a working copy of microsoft office 2010 on her computer, so nothing was uninstalled. I asked her a few questions and she is one that doesn't really play around with settings etc.

Setting windows back to a earlier restore point did not fix the problem. I also done a system file checker with another program in the command prompt but that still did not work.

The problem is fixed now and will be putting the steps up on my nvda audio tutorials page under trouble  shooting the steps to fix it.

It will list some of the problems i had where it affected nvda and under it will be the steps that fixed it.

it is a nasty bug if you can call it that or some thing some how unregisted  certain parts that nVDA needs to work properly.

I was also able to get a nvda.log as well if some one could look into it, I am pretty sure it was set to debug.

I have seen reference to this in some past emails on the list so hopefully this same thing might fix there problem if the same.

Subject: [nvda] NVDA keeps on saying unknown yet speaks in other places

hi guys

i have a lady who gave me her laptop. She is running Windows 10 with the anniversary version of windows. it is a 64 bit machine and has NVDA 2017.2 on it at present.

she has mozilla thunder bird and fire fox etc on it.

there are no viruses etc on it.

NVDA starts up and is using the e speak synth.

some of the things it is doing like when you tab say from the start menu across the taskbar where the running applications are it is saying unknown. Ausing the arrow keys nvda will not speak any thing. A sighted person said there is little icons there but are not getting read out. it will speak the windows notification area and also the desktop. You can arrow around etc and that part works. You can go into NVDAs menus etc. You can also go into windows explorer and navigate there as well. But the menus up the topwill only speak the main tabs and not any thing as you tab down the list.

When you go into mozilla thunder bird it just says unknown as you tab. you can not even get into the menus up the top with the alt key etc.

the same sort of thing happens in mozilla fire fox and there is a page loaded which it does not speak. it will not even speak the menus up the top either. Quick navigation keys do not even work.

I have even uninstalled NVDA totally both through the program and features section and also under the %appdata% section then installed a clean copy of NVDA, yet the same results.

At present i am doing a system restore to a earlier date but will not know until it boots up if the problems is still there.

The applications key when pressed i got told it comes up, but nvda does not speak it when you arrow down the menu.

any ideas i could try? I have also tried it from a thumb drive with a good working copy, but still the same results.

I will try and get a nvda log and send it so you guys might get a better idea of what is happening.

Hi mark

if it is the same problem i had and it sounds like what i only posted a day or 2 ago to the nvda audio tutorials page under the trouble shooting section hopefully it will sort out the problem like it did with mine. You will most probably need a set of eyes maybe to enter the lines into the command prompt window. If you red the date on the previous email that says about unknown that was when i had the problem on the ladies computer. maybe a month or so ago.

can i ask if it has any of the following symptoms?

What ever browser you go into it says unknown or maybe pane. Browse mode does not work so your quick navigation keys do not work either.
You can not get into the menus up the top and if you can you can not arrow down the sub menus.

If you are using mozilla thunder bird when you go into it and tab to try a and get to the tree view it says unknown, the same idea with the menus not working properly?

Down on the running application part where microsoft edge etc is down on the task bar it says unknown to all of the icons down there even though some one can see them.

If you use the applications key and the menus comes up but will not be spoken as you arrow down the list and some other weird type of stuff.

If this is the case i think even a proper uninstall of nvda and the roming part of windows did not work either. I do not think even the reset of nvda back to factory defaults did either.

Is there similar things happening?

Ask if someone removed Word or Office.  It sounds as though someone did something like that which damages Windows ability to work with NVDA.  I don't know if the problem can be corrected other than by doing something like reverting Windows using the Windows 10 feature.  But I don't know if everything must be removed or if Windows can be reverted while keeping installed programs.  Others who know more will, I hope comment.

Re: Important advisory for today's next snapshot: if using Windows 10, disable OCR add-on

Hi,

This does not apply to anyone NOT using next snapshots (NVDA menu/Help/About).

In short, this feature will allow NVDA to recognize screen text and present the result in a document window.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi everyone,

The following advisory from the add-ons community is for people using NVDA next snapshots on Windows 10:

Due to UWP OCR feature introduced in today’s next snapshot, please disable OCR add-on if you are on Windows 10 and using next snapshots. This is because NVDA+R is now a native NVDA command to recognize text on screen using a chosen OCR engine.

Cheers,

Joseph

HELLO,
I give a try to new OCR.
The positive thing is the fast recognization time, really impressive.
The negative thing is that it is not possible anymore to recognize
entire window of a software. It seems it works only with document.
I will attempt to reactivate the old addon and map gesture keys to
nvda-shift-r, hope it works, so we can have 2 ocr engine.

Hi dear Joseph,
Which OCR engins does this feature use. How can a user choose his/her
desired OCR engin to use?
Best wishes,

Re: NVDA problem with Browsers

Gene New Zealand <hurrikennyandopo@...>

Hi

another question of which i forgot to ask but the other Gene did was about uninstalling programs. What was the last couple only when you noticed it first happened? was one of them maths html or some thing like that?

Actually it is called Using MathPlayer 4 from Design Science,  if it has been installed then uninstalled reinstall it.

They should of fixed the bug when it first happened so it should not do it now.

Just in case it was that plug in reinstall it and it should fix the problem.

j

Under the general settings section in NVDA go to the section that says about  Logging level and change the option down to debug then save your settings.

This will make it alot easier for them to see what is happening to cause the problem.

It might be a good idea to catch the log as well in NVDA Do you know how to do it?

If not do the following.

Use the nvda key + letter N so the nvda preferences comes up then arrow down to tools then right arrow to log then press the enter key.

When it comes up it will have the log there it will need to be saved and maybe emailed so they can see what happened.

it would be most probably a good idea to start nvda up again so the log is fresh and then go back into your browser etc where you are having the problems so it is caught of the areas mentioned etc.

If it is the same thing i had i only just posted up a tutorial to fix it or hopefully fix it if it is the same one.

hi mark

can i ask if it has any of the following symptoms?
