Thanks guys I have been able to fix it. Tyler's suggestion to disable enhancements worked and now NVDA is extremely snappy and well responding.

Here is what I did:
In control Panel go to sounds and then the Playback devices tab
Open Properties of Playback devices and go to the Enhancements tab.
Under Enhancements Check the box Disable all sound effects
Press Ok and Ok again on the Properties Tab
You will see the effect immediately.

I am using the last iteration of Windows Creator, last updated one hour ago,

last Next version of NVDA and a low power PC and I haven't that delay...



Have you deleted your NVDA configurations folder to start from scratch?

I have tried using narrator and it works fine and is very responsive. I have

also uninstalled NVDA and run it from a portable copy but the problem

remains.

A couple of weeks ago my laptop updated to Win 10 Creators update.

Since then I've noticed that NVDA 2017.2 seems to have become very

slow to respond to all keystrokes - approx 1 second delay each time. I

tried reinstalling NVDA but that didn't seem to help.

Additionally after another Windows update this week, it's become very

stuttery and the delay has got much worse. It's now almost impossible

to use.

Has anyone else experienced this? And/or does anyone have any ideas

about where to start to try to rectify the situation? Drivers,

conflicting software, etc? I know that one approach would be to

attempt to roll back to before Creators but that feels like the

nuclear option.

Character recognition is good and fast, but one thing about the app
that really disappointed me, is that it does not retain the layout of
the text you scan; It simply dumps everything in one continuous
paragraph. So, if you want it to scan books that you would like to
keep, or if the layout is important, then I think you will waste your
money. I can only hope that this is an area that will receive some
attention in a future release. In its present form it is really only
good for a quick and dirty.

Hi,

I am running NVDA 2017.2 and I believe Win 10 Creators version.  Yep, it installed without asking me if I wanted it or not. ;-))

Now when I am using many different software packages it always jumps back to the start menu if I do things like closing an email, or making some choices in other programs.  It will do this if I delete a file sometimes too.

Is anyone else having this experience?  Is it something to do with Win 10 Creators or is it something to do with NVDA?

Well laptop manufacturers put in enhancements to make the sound better than it actually is.

Lets face it, if you want to have a laptop to an ultrabook, compromises need to be made.

Laptop sound is entire crap!

But then would you want to carry round a pair of desktop speakers with your or in your computer?

Back in win 98 and up to xp and earlier there was a time where laptops were large bulky heavy things and yes they actually had good speakers full sized ones and yes they sounded good but even then.

My next system will be since I spend a lot of my time on a desk and not all day traveling the wild roads a gaming unit so a laptop but half way towards a pc.

So these can afford bigger and heavier hardware like speakers.

To combat these laptop manufacturers try to put enhancements on top of well their sound to make it cool.

This serves to take away the worst bits like the speaker peaks and so on and try to make them cool sounding.

And for 99.9% of users it kind of works ok.

Speech though is not music or video, lets face it your average speech synth, ie espeak is full of peaks.

The reason we are getting a hard time is enhancements are designed for sound, and music, not speech especially not screen reader or synthetic speech.

To be honest its almost impossible to have effects at all.

On my soundblaster play creative usb device even without effects speech can be a bit short at times and choppy.

With effects the speech becomes quite crappy and disturbing yet plug in a good set of speakers and put on your favourite music or concert dvd and its all gone.

Microphone effects though if you have them especially echo cancilation, noise reduction and other filters are actually good as they get rid of background noise and actually sound good.

Laptop manufacturers can use depending on what it is some really good microphones.

eg this old toshiba while using a bog standard realtech hd audio unit, has andriea electronics mics in it.

These are used by military and are if not the best one of the good units for speech recognition.

And while not speech recognition material as such they work for skype, and some voice work I do they are clean etc.

Then again I can turn off effects which makes them totally evil and nasty at close range but quite good for far ranged recording as long as you have speakers in the laptop speaker port.

For me it just seems to be NVDA when used with anything. I've not tried
Narrator, but JAWS is fine.

And coincidentally I am also running it on a Lenovo Ideapad 510.

Last evening I had a Microsoft support session and the technician
recommended returning to Win 10 Anniversary edition. That turned out to not
be as easy as it could have been as I didn't have a restore point.
Contemplating a full on reload of Win10, but concerned how much of my setup
that will trash.

You could try running the compatibility troubleshooter on NVDA. For me it
didn't make any difference.
