I agree that Seeing AI is impressive. A colleague at work and I have been testing it. I predict we'll see steady improvements in image recognition based on ongoing advances in artificial neural netowrks (i.e., deep learning). Seeing AI is also reputedly available in several countries already, not just the U.S.

Hi,

I also have KNFB, try Prizmo Go, It's free if you don't want to save files and only a few dollars if you do. It has some advantages over KNFB and is one heck of an app.
If you're in the states, try Seeing Ai from Microsoft It will be released for other country's soon. This app may well be the future. It's impressive and a bit of a WOW app.

Thanks,
Jim.

I fully agree. KNFBReader is the best and fastest on a smartphone, at least for me on my iPhone. I'm also using finereader on my PC, but I'm using an older version and it works fine with Win10, but is only 30$ on Amazon. No need to pay 100 bucks for the most recent version.

Cheers,
Ralf

I have the iOS version also. My comments about it would be exactly the same as what I said about the Windows app. Character recognition is good and fast, but it is not usable for material where layout is important.
For a quick and dirty it is fine or if layout is not important. I would not recommend it for scanning books that you want to keep. I use Abbyy FineReader on my desktop for that.

I think the app is way over-priced at its full price of around $100. I only bought it at its much reduced price and knowing what I know now, I certainly would not pay more than that. If you have $100 to spend, get FineReader; it does a far superior job for the same money and is perfectly accessible.

On the Smartphone KNFB is probably the best option, but I think it, too, is over-priced given its limitations.

Kind regards

Christo

Hello

I have KNFB which I use with a flatbed HP scanner.

Character recognition is good and fast, but one thing about the app
that really disappointed me, is that it does not retain the layout of
the text you scan; It simply dumps everything in one continuous
paragraph. So, if you want it to scan books that you would like to
keep, or if the layout is important, then I think you will waste your
money. I can only hope that this is an area that will receive some
attention in a future release. In its present form it is really only
good for a quick and dirty.

Remove XP support. It was marked EOL way back in 2014. People have had more than enough time to transition.

The last version of psutil and Resource monitor that’s compatible with Windows XP are 3.4.2 and 16.08, respectively.

Until further notice, I advise Windows XP users to either use version 16.08 or disable the add-on. If you do downgrade to 16.08, you’ll lose uptime announcement (NVDA+Shift+7) and bug fix for disk status command (fixes introduced in 17.02).

There are several ways of resolving this:

• Bundle an old version of psutil package with the add-on. This may introduce compatibility problems.
• Disable support for XP: catch the error and tell XP users that some add-on features aren’t compatible.
• Remove support for XP. However, this runs into issues for those who rely on XP.

Cheers,
Joseph

If it is not accessible now, that doesn't mean it won't be.  Others may be able to tell you how to get information on whether and how long it may be before accessibility is introduced.  You can probably have your money returned, if desired assuming accessibility will take long enough for the app not to be of value to a blind user for more than just a short time from now.

How disappointing! I'll now have to look for another backup solution.

There are some apps which will keep the computer from going into screensaver mode or standby mode while that particular app is being used, even if no mouse or keyboard activity is occurring. Why could not this be done with screen readers?

It's not a bug.  Windows doesn't know to keep the screen-reader from coming up because no keys are being depressed.  Manufacturers have said for decades that screen-savers should not be on when using a screen-reader.

Actually, I do consider this a bug, because as long as my screen reader is talking, the machine shouldn't go to sleep, it's still doing something, even if it's not visible to a sighted person.

Apple is bad with this too, and it's something that has irritated me for years.

Emergency advisory for Windows XP and Resource Monitor users: please use version 16.08 or disable the add-on

Re: Google Drive new version mystery

Felix G.

Hello,
the reason for this update is that it has now become a full-featured backup solution which can backup and sync folders from the computer, not just within the Google Drive directory tree.
Once the dust settles this will be a good thing actually.
Kind regards,
Felix

Well I just uninstalled it and had to do a massive clean out of broken
active x and start up entries for windows in windows 7 as it kept trying to
reinstall it after the uninstall and even when I thought it had gone I could
not remove its folder till I used autorun to remove the extra crap.

What a bloomin mess. Somebody needs to do more testing.
So how can I reinstall the old version without it keeping on saying I'm
running an old version and wanting to update it all the time. I only want to
swap files  from one folder. the new version even if the dialogue text was
accessible which its not and even if it did not pop up at every  start up
which it does and even if it actually worked when you clicked the tray icon
instead of falling over, which it won't, its overkill.

How do they know the screen-reader has become active?  Unless something has changed in JAWS or Windows, JAWS stops when a screen-reader becomes active.  I can't rule out that something hasn't changed in later versions of Windows or in later versions of JAWS.  I'm skeptical, but we'll see what others say.

You didn't say you activated the add button before you activated the ok button.  In unfamiliar dialogs. look through everything and let everything that might have any relevance to what you are doing read completely.

Hello Brian,

Can you explain how you changed those pronounciations? I just went in
to the symbols pronounciation, changed bang to exclaimation saved,
even restarted NVDA, nothing changed. Can you export your symbols and
import them elsewhere?

Thanks.
Dave.

There are two exclamation marks. One that NVDA determines ends a
sentence and a general use one, that possibly is used when you press
it on the keyboard. Change both for best results.
