Although it is off topic, to answer your question, I just open the pdf with the native app of Dropbox. And I also opened it with Adobe reader.

Hi!
I've been sent plenty of .pdf files where NVDA says the file is either blank or needs OCR. This isn't a fault of the .pdf reader, such a message is usually caused by the fact that the contents of the .pdf are an image rather than text. Interesting that such a file showed up as text readable by Voiceover on an iPad: I can't explain that!
However, as regards a solution to the problem of such blank-looking .pdf files on Windows, I use Omnipage, the OCR program I have here, to make the text in such files accessible, even though this usually means having two copies of the file, because the text version is in another format, usually Word in my case.
I'm not familiar with other OCR programs on Windows, but I would guess that at least some of them have a similar function, where image files in .pdf containing text can be converted to formats like .rtf or .doc which are more accessible.
I hope this helps!
Bye for now!

Re: Kaspersky antivirus, how accessible?

David Parduhn

Hi Dan,
How accessible is Kaspersky with NVDA? It seems to get very good
reviews as far as an antivirus tool.
I wrote an nvda add-on for Kaspersky Internet Security which might also
work with Kaspersky Anti virus. The add-on was developed and tested with
KIS 2014, 2015 and 2016; all in Windows 7 x64. The Add-on uses UIA, so I
don't think that it works in Windows xp.
The add-on can be downloaded at
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/67471/avp-0.7.nvda-addon

a (german) discussion thread can be found in the Kaspersky lab forum:

happy testing

Re: Problem with reading pdf

Brian's Mail list account BY <bglists@...>

No Adobe files seem to be produced now by all sorts of programs. I've had occasions where the whole document has had 1 character on each line, or all words running together with no spaces By far the biggest issue is people producing newspaper like pdfs, but never locally tagging the reading order when the number of columns changes. The second most common cock up is the screen of text which is merely a picture of text. To the sighted, this seems ok in the most part, but I'm told often the clarity of the letters is so bad that not even trying to OCR it will come up with a valid readable result. Sadly a lot of manufacturers manuals fall into this category. If its really good you can use the nvda Add on ocr for the task, but its still yet another step we should not have to use to read a commonly used format.
Yes when we say things crash, often what we mean is that they seem to lose touch with the screenreader, or hang for some minutes for no good reason. The latter issue seems to be something to do with UIA and bugs in its routines that mean when interrogated by the screenreader they suspend the program for a given time.

I use everything except powerpoint all without problems. Outlook is used daily, word most days for long and short documents and creating envelopes (which were tricky until I got the hang of where things were located), excel quite often though I don't create a lot of formulas because I use documents that I just copy over for the new year, access is usable but not pleasant though it is not pleasant and mostly unusable with other screen readers.

by Voiceover on an iPad: I can't explain that!
However, as regards a solution to the problem of such blank-looking .pdf
files on Windows, I use Omnipage, the OCR program I have here, to make the
text in such files accessible, even though this usually means having two
copies of the file, because the text version is in another format, usually
Word in my case.
I'm not familiar with other OCR programs on Windows, but I would guess

Re: MS Office 365

Carlos

Hello:
Both Libre Office and Open Office on my machine when installed separately from each other have both developed a very nasty habit of crashing when trying to close them down especially if there is a document which needs to be saved.
It also happens on portable copies of both!
I am glad that in your cases they work properly! But! In my case all these crashes and when re-opening the program and it saying that it needs to recover un-saved documents and it crashes itself. And, sometimes it also takes NVDA down with it!
So, I am really happy for those who have no issues with Libre/Open Office!

After having received a one line not very helpful answer to my

I have decided to subscribe to Office 365 since at times the various

In options, display, advanced there is a check box to check Close message window/tab on move or delete and open messages in a new message window is also selected. You can open messages in an existing window as well, but I don't know how it will effect what you want to do try and see what happens.

ctrl+pageUp and pageDown work, but, you will generally then need to use ctrl+home to jump back to top of next/previous page if you were at the end of the prior page, before then initiating reading again.
