Re: NVDA IS SLUGGISH

I have the laptop set to 100% all the time or 50%, so nvda stops stuttering and being stupid.

Having your laptop on your lap though is just no good at that level.

I try to have nothing about me and just run the thing.

Dear group

I have NVDA 2017.2, Windows 10, the Creators' Update and MS Office 2010 on
my laptop. I have recently been experiencing the following problems:

When I type, NVDA has a lag. I have completed typing a word and NVDA is
still spelling the word I have already typed. This happens on the
iinternet, in MS office or wherever I am.

The other problem is that when I try to open icons on the the desktop, or on
the internet, NVDA is late in announcing things, so I enter on the wrong
icon since the cursor is already on an icon ahead of the one NVDA announces.
Eg: I have 3 icons starting with "t" on the desktop, "TW Blue", "Tap In
Radio" and "This PC". NVDA will announce "This PC" but the cursor is on "TW
Blue", therefore I open the wrong thing.

I am using Speeech player in e-speak's Edward voice as the synthesiser.

What can I do to solve this?

Kind regards

I brought the app it is very accessible with nvda with windows 10. it will also let you scan from your scanner it found mine just like that. you can also use the web cam if you have one. Plenty of options to choose from

I got mine when it was 30 kiwi dollars or was it a little bit less.

I thought thought the sale had ended maybe just here in new zealand.

Kurzweil uses fine reader as its OCR engine, anyway. What you gain is better fine tuning of the OCR process. With the commercial version of FR, this is done by drawing blocks around the image portion, highlighting and enhancing. In Kurzweil, you can do this by using its optimize scanning features, which can be useful for old documents and blurry print.

This would allow for greater fine tuning of the weather report. So you could

If you use eSpeak NG do you still get the sluggishness?  I'm not necessarily suggesting that as a fix, just to help diagnose the issue.

If you press NVDA+q to quit NVDA, but instead of pressing enter, press down arrow and choose "restart with add-ons disabled", that will also indicate if the issue is caused or exacerbated by any add-ons you might be using.

Finally, it might be worth going to the quit NVDA screen and selecting "restart with log level debug" to get a more detailed log that might help show up any issues.  More info on logs here: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/wiki/LogFilesAndCrashDumps

Hi all,

SPL add-on 17.08.1 emergency patch and snapshot builds for August 1st are now rolling out (you’ll need to wait about half an hour for 17.08.1 to show up on stable channel). This update fixes the following:

  • Critical regression: NVDA will no longer fail to cause Studio to play the first track when an encoder is connected. The ultimate cause was a dispute between Windows API and a background task used to let Studio play the first track when the encoder is encoding. See https://github.com/josephsl/stationplaylist/issues/37 for details.

This fix is also applied to today’s Test Drive builds. As this is a critical update, I advise everyone (except those on 15.x LTS) to apply these updates (for various channels) as soon as possible (preferably prior to your next broadcast).

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: Using NVDA for Ebooks and Kindle

hi.
may i ask whats the format of kindle books?
and i think that there is no different between jaws and nvda in this regard.
NVDA supports reading and navigating books in Amazon Kindle for PC.
This functionality is only available in Kindle books that support
"Enhanced Typesetting", which you can check on the details page for
the book.
Browse mode is used to read books. It is enabled automatically when
you open a book or focus the book area. The page will be turned
automatically as appropriate when you move the cursor or use the say
all command. You can manually turn to the next page with the pageDown
key and turn to the previous page with the pageUp key.
Single letter navigation is supported for links and graphics, but only
within the current page. Navigating by link also includes footnotes.
8.8.1. Text Selection
Kindle allows you to perform various functions on selected text,
including obtaining a dictionary definition, adding notes and
highlights, copying the text to the clipboard and searching the web.
To do this, first select text as you normally would in browse mode;
e.g. by using shift and the cursor keys. Once you have selected text,
press the applications key or shift+f10 to show the available options
for working with the selection. If you do this with no text selected,
options will be shown for the word at the cursor.
8.8.2. User Notes
You can add a note regarding a word or passage of text. To do this,
first select the relevant text and access the selection options as
described above. Then, choose Add Note.
When reading in browse mode, NVDA refers to these notes as comments.
To view, edit or delete a note:
1. Move the cursor to the text containing the note.
2. Access the options for the selection as described above.
3. Choose Edit Note.
i copied the guidance from nvda user guide and sent it.
inhance typesetting is changed to designated with screen reader
supported in nvda 2017.2
hope that help and God bless you.

Hi,

Kindle books compatible with JAWS will work just as well with NVDA.

The vast majority of eBooks, including Kindle ones, have digital rights
management on them. This means that you can't just copy into a text file;
the idea is that you only read the file in an approved app, such as
Kindle.

You can refund a bought Kindle book with no questions asked if you're
unsure
about accessibility, so I'd say get the very latest NVDA and Kindle for
PC
and you're good to go.

Subject: [nvda-spl] SPL add-on 17.08.1 emergency patch is rolling out along with August 1st snapshots #AddonRelease

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi,

I actually have the app on my PC, I asked to see if anyone else had it and to get their thoughts. I very much appreciate  your thoughts though.

I got mine when it was 30 kiwi dollars or was it a little bit less.

There is also KNFB reader for windows 10. For the next week or so it is 80 percent off. In Australia I think the price is $29.95 at the moment. Has anyone tried it out?

I'm very skeptical that Kurzweil; or Openbook provide either better recognition or recognition that is better enough to pay those exhorbitant prices for.

Hi,

Kindle books compatible with JAWS will work just as well with NVDA.

The vast majority of eBooks, including Kindle ones, have digital rights
management on them. This means that you can't just copy into a text file;
the idea is that you only read the file in an approved app, such as Kindle.

You can refund a bought Kindle book with no questions asked if you're unsure
about accessibility, so I'd say get the very latest NVDA and Kindle for PC
and you're good to go.

Dear Group,

There are many books on Amazon.com that are in Kindle form.

The description says they are only compatible with JAWS.

I'm wondering if reading these books is possible with NVDA?

Are these Kindle books the same thing as Ebooks, and are they
just something you can cut and paste into Notepad or Word?

Thanks for the help.

Re: accessible VPN on windows?

Travis Siegel <tsiegel@...>

Some folks use free ones, and say they work, while others say they don't. If you don't mind paying a monthly fee (nothing says you have to pay for it during those months you don't need to use it, if you know what those are in advance) is pearl VPN. I use that one, and it works perfectly fine with NVDA (or any other screen reader for that matter).

You can find it at (curiously enough)
http://www.pearlvpn.com/
Hope this helps.
