Its OK Joseph us Geeks like to know the details, even though we do not
understand all of them.
Your explanation of how different forms of the program are generated takes

me way back to my old 8 bit days of compiled basic on the old ZX Spectrum.
You could compile to a kind of intermediate code which was basically just
the bytes needed by the main routines of the basic, and you could compile to

stand alone machine code, which tended to be faster aas it wrote the whole
lot in assembler, pure and simple, but did have some annoying issues with
random numbers and such like, which were less than random!
Anyway, off topic but very interesting.

What Don is experiencing is yet another manifestation of a common problem
encountered by some users: when you start NVDA while focused on a web
browser window, NVDA will complain about a resource not being available.
Without going into details, what happens is this:

1. You start a web browser such as Chrome, Firefox and what not while NVDA
is not loaded.
2. Move focus to the web browser window.
3. Start NVDA.

Expected: NVDA loads browse mode document correctly.

Actual: NULL context problem as noted in Don’s log.

Possible cause: a dispute between NVDA and the user possibly because NVDA
cannot provide you with a clearer picture of what’s going on in the browser.

This is mostly caused by NVDA not being able to complete certain things when

it comes to constructing browse mode facility.

Surprisingly, the problem described does not occur with Microsoft Edge:

1. Without NVDA running, start Microsoft Edge.
2. Go to a website with Edge.
3. Start NVDA.

Expected: Browse mode is available in Edge.

Actual: Yes, browse mode is usable with Edge from the beginning.

Theory: possibly due to NVDA not using code injection routines as Edge
disallows its private parts from being shown to others.



As for snapshots emitting error sounds: this is by design, and it’s due to
combination of Python and NVDA. Python can be told to suppress errors, and
NVDA hooks internals of Python for various purposes, one of them being
playing error sounds when exceptions occur. In snapshots, no optimization is

applied to interpreted code that’ll run in Python, thus NVDA will tell
Python to play error tones when errors do occur; in contrast, in stable
builds such as 2017.2 and 2017.3, a basic optimization steps are applied,
which also disables playing error sounds.



For most of you, you can ignore the following paragraphs, as they concern
some NVDA internals; if you are an add-on writer interested in making your
add-on run better (and slightly faster) or need to go into details as you
write code for NVDA, please listen up:



Python is not a compiled language, it’s a semi-interpreted one. I call it a

semi-interpreted language because most modules are transformed into bytecode

when run, while a small number of them are compiled into machine code as
they are written in C. When a Python interpreter runs (such as when NVDA
starts), any .py source code is turned into either a .pyc or a .pyo file,
both of which are bytecode files and hence only readable with Python
bytecode interpreters. A .pyc file is a raw bytecode with no optimizations
whatsoever, while a .pyo file is a .pyc file with “optimizations” applied –

there’s really no optimization. However, in Python 3.5 and later, .pyo files

are no more, replaced by a better .pyc file which are stored under a cache
folder for faster startup (I won’t go into details on that here, as it is
too off-topic and very geeky to talk about).



At compile time (via SCons), one can specify that the resulting NVDA binary

is a snapshot or a stable version (see the readme file in NVDA source code
for details). One of the things done during NVDA compilation is generating
appropriate bytecode files, controlled by addition of a switch (if Python is

run with -o or -oo switch, a .pyo (or in Python 3.5, a better .pyc) file
will be generated). But transforming Python source code to bytecode isn’t
the only thing done during compilation: when a stable release is created,
Visual Studio’s C/C++ compiler (cl.exe) will be told to optimize DLL’s and
executables used by NVDA, resulting in a slightly longer time to compile the

source code.



As for how NVDA can play error tones and what not, this is controlled by a
function that NVDA patches that basically will tell NVDA to log exceptions,

as well as checking to make sure you’re running a snapshot build
(versionInfo.isTestVersion).



Regarding optimizing Python code, don’t do it unless you are compelled to do

so. In other words, after testing your code and debugging it, you believe a

possible rewrite can make your slow code run a bit faster. And optimization

should not end with comparing bytecode instruction count: optimization
should start and end with testing.



By the way, if you are curious about what Python thinks it should do when it

sees your class, function or a module or two, you can go ahead and
disassemble a .pyc/.pyo file (using the dis module). Be warned of three
things: not all bytecode instructions are created equal, they won’t give you

the complete picture or take you on a tell-all backstage tour of the Python

interpreter or internals, and sometimes disassembling the code won’t help
you make your code faster in most cases; that is, use it as a handy
“reference guide” to Python internals, and optimize the bytecode generation

if you do know what you are doing.



In other words, when it comes to code optimizations, don’t do it unless you

have to and are willing to go through several lab sessions where you’ll
learn more than how to make your Python code run better; I can guarantee you

that even seasoned programmers like I make big mistakes when we focus too
much on optimizations.



An important thing to note regarding add-on code review process: when asking

for a code review on your add-on from me, don’t expect me to just pass your

code if what I get is just Python bytecode files; in case that happens, I
will ask you to provide the source code or a repository for one if possible

before giving feedback. In short, a clean, simple to use and understand (and

review) add-on that helps the community is better than a fancy add-on with
all sorts of optimizations applied, and showing efforts to learn more than
Python is much better than learning a domain-specific language just to make

your life and lives of others easier. I’m making these statements to let you

think about this for a while, to serve as a reality check for some, and to
highlight the importance of the community when making contributions via
add-ons and anything that involves coding.

Yep, also remember that error is an NVDA error, not a Windows error, so
often it will be that whatever you were trying to do has worked, the
question is whether NVDA has problems reporting what would be expected to
be reported at that point. I know it's always a bit concerning when you do
something like go to send an important e-mail and you get the error sound!
Unless it's the Windows error sound though, it's likely just that NVDA
didn't get some piece of information properly.

The next snapshots are set to play the error sound whenever an error is

encountered. Often these errors may not actually cause any negative
effects for the user, so although they may also occur in the stable build,
most users would never notice them. If they do cause negative effects or
something not to work, then definitely do file an issue. If they don't
cause any problems, then you could file it, but it would be low priority.
To find out what the error is, there will be an entry in the log - press
NVDA+N then T for tools then ENTER for "View Log". Newest entry is at the
bottom.

Yes I sent them email when it first appeared. it crashes a lot with the usual problem of xxx has stopped working or if you were in the middle of something in XP. The wording is different but the problem is the same. the software is riddled with bugs and is more or less unusable with access tech.
They must have had loads of complaints but still maintain its accessible. I completely uninstalled it, removed any services that were still left running as the uninstall is not very good either. and re installed the previous version and stopped it updating itself and have ignored it since.
Until they get it sorted I think its the best way out. I have a feeling that the bit that allows any folder to be backed up is the part that has caused the issues with reliability. Why they made the set up so darned messy is anyones guess. probably the tea boy wrote that part. Brian
