yes, both openoffice and libreoffice work with all versions of nvda

which i tested since 2014 versions of nvda.

i used libreoffice, but i decided to migrate to openoffice.

libreoffice has many features in compare to openoffice, but openoffice

is very much simpler, easy to use and learn, even we can select which

feature we want to install!

but unfortunately its removed from libreoffice.

openoffice exe file at least 80 mb less than libreoffice.msi file,

because libreoffice is translated to more than 110 languages and it

has all languages and more than 40 dictionaries in its installer file,

but in openoffice you can select your desire language and for

additional languages, you should download and install languagePack

separately.

libreoffice is i think currently stable, but openoffice is more

stable, because there is no extreme changes in any version that they

release!

I have an original Humanware brailliant 32 if you didn't find one or anybody else is looking. In perfect shape, very little use. I didn't like going back and forth between the display and the qwerty keyboard and just wanted to get one that had a braille keyboard, which I have now done, focus 14. I had the brailliant out a few months ago and it was still working, didn't seam like the battery was failing or anything. All the pins work well.

Using NVDA 2017.3 rc1 and LibreOffice Writer 5.3.4.2 I did the following:

- Opened Word 2016 (I didn't have an old Word 2003 document handy) and typed a few words, saved as Word 97 - 2003 format .doc.

- Opened LibreOffice Writer.

- Opened the document I'd saved.

- Read through document, added some text.

- Saved document, and when prompted, saved in Office 2003 format.

I did notice at that point, the NVDA seemed to lose focus.  Pressing alt twice to go into the menu and back, or alt+tab to something else and back fixed the issue though. 

I tried again and had no problems, although I got the lose focus thing at one point moving through the text.  I didn't find a concrete way to reproduce that.  It's annoying, but it didn't bring the system down or anything.  The focus itself was still in the document, so I could still move around and edit, it was just that NVDA wasn't reading properly so I expect it wouldn't be evident with NVDA not running.  Nothing untoward in the NVDA log though.  I have noticed occasional issues with LibreOffice so not sure if this is related to using a Word 2003 doc, or just a general LIbreOffice thing.

If clickable items are all displayed on separate lines, that's another
reason that use screen layout should be off by default. If someone is a
skilled and experienced enough Internet user to work in situations, such as
some forums, where having use screen layout should be on, the person will be
likely to know about the setting. Defaults should be defined with respect
to new or not very knowledgeable users and most NVDA users won't ever be
very knowledgeable. Such users won't know there is a choice and will be
inconvenienced by not having links on separate lines and not know there is
any alternative.

One issue for some is that wne several clickables are on a line, the
clickable seems to all be spoken together not at each clickable element.
This is where having every clickable element on a new line can add clarity.

Screen layout has nothing to do with clickable. Screen layout in the
default setting, shows the screen layout if it can be done. for example, if

there are two or more links on one line, they will all be shown on one line.

If the setting is changed, then links will each be shown on separate lines,

one for each link.

To turn off clickable announcements, In object navigation, tabbing around
will have a check box about reporting clicable objects and it should be
changed. If its checked now, it should be unchecked or if unchecked, it
should be checked. Then tab to and activate the ok button.

Clickable won't be reported. But there are times when you need to know what

is clickable on web pages so this setting shouldn't be left off all the
time. Especially if you are on a page and don't see how to do something, it

should be turned on.

eSpeak is the default synthesizer that comes with NVDA. If you go into the
synthesizer dialog - NVDA+control+s, you can change to other synthesizers
you have on your system. Microsoft Speech API Version 5 (and on XP
Microsoft Speech API Version 4) are different to eSpeak.

I agree that it's when I'm proof reading that I find the beep for
capitals
helpful. I have a configuration profile for editing documents before I
submit them anywhere, in which I have the punctuation level set to
all,

slow the speed down a little, and it would be helpful to have the beep

having to navigate to the specific place where there should be a

The original question from Don was around opening a Word 2003 DOC file (not
docx) on a Windows 10 computer running NVDA 2017.3rc1 and LibreOffice. I
couldn't reproduce the issue on my system, but I didn't have an old Office
2003 file, I just made one in Word 2016, and there's all kinds of reasons
why that might be different.

If anyone has a doc file that reproduces the crash that you can share, feel
free to send it to me directly (you won't be able to send it on list in any
case).
