Hi Chris,
Firstly, welcome to the list!
Windows 10 OCR is available for every version of Windows 10, and yes, it runs completely offline.
I saw a post from Feb last year, about the November (2015) update saying how Microsoft had added some new languages, which brought the total at the time, up to 25 languages. You might need at least a particular build of Windows 10 if you are using non-English languages, but I can't find a list.
Regards
Quentin.

Hi,
First of all, I'm new to the list and this is my first post. I have a couple questions about the new OCR feature.
1. Does it work on all versions of Windows 10 or just the Creators version and newer? 2. Does this work even if you're offline?
This release is awesome! It's one of the best ones I've experienced in my 6 or so years of using NVDA.

Hi Dennis,
Good question. The answer, I believe, would be unfortunately not. The OCR functionality we are using, like the OneCore voices, are built-in to Windows 10. If Microsoft ever made them available in earlier versions, then we could use them, sure. In earlier versions of Windows prior to Windows 10, you can still use the OCR Add-on available from https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/ocr.en.html

As has been said. A: you wont get really good ones for free and.. B: if you are not using a fast pc, the lag may well be far too great. In fact in the case of a very slow machine 1ghz with less than 2 gig memory, the actual voice glitches as the system cannot cope with the demand.

You could look up different synthesizers doing Google searches such as DecTalk farsi. But perhaps a better way in terms of efficiency to find something is to do a Google search for something like speech synthesizer farsi or free speech synthesizer farsi and see what results you get. You might change your subject line and ask the question again here. Your initial subject line may have caused those who may know about farsi to skip the question.

it's not hard to fined something better than Microsoft Sam. That's not saying much, to say that a voice is better than one of the worst ones. I played with two free voices and I don't like either but they are better, as are most voices, than Microsoft Sam. The better of the two I played with is Softvoice. The worse of the two is Svox pico synthesizer. These are both NVDA Add Ons so and I think you said you want SAPI 5 voices. Being add ons, they are limited to NVDA. I believe a lot of the free voices on the NVDA page are add ons but I haven't looked at enough to know that, it's just my suspicion. I believe you said you want a voice to use with other programs than NVDA. If so, neither voice I discussed will be suitable.
All I can say is that you can look at the voices and see if any might meet your needs, then try them.
The NVDA page with voices is https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/wiki/ExtraVoices

How do i activate unclickable linkis?
On some websites I find links that don't respond to either the enter key or the NVDA key hat simulates a left mouse click. I assume that these are mouse-over links, but there must be a way to actibate them. For example, in the New American Bible I place my cursor on the link to Ruth, but I can't open the book. In the case of Outlook 2003, it seems that sometimes just opening an email can crash everything as well. I wonder if you are right here, and its some specific info gathering in many versions of outlook that can cause trouble, the way UIA used to when it was first implemented by Microsoft, freezing up the computer and nvda. In XP if you recall, Microsoft brought out a glue on UIA update and that had so much trouble uia had to be completely disabled in nvda as using it crashed. Brian

I have Outlook 2007 and it works fine with NVDA until I try to read the status bar using NVDA+end when Outlook stops working and I have to restart it. This has occurred in quite a few versions of NVDA up to 17.2. I'm not saying it's an NVDA problem, it may be something to do with the interaction between the information exposed by Outlook and how NVDA obtains it whichh causes it. I doubt MS would do anything to solve it, so I just avoid using that keystroke.

Hi everyone,
I am running Outlook 2016 on Windows 10 with the latest update of NVDA.
Over the past month, I have found that outlook stops and runs out of time almost every time (four times a day) that I check my emails. I notice the problem particularly when I try to swap between folders. This generates the message that Outlook has stopped working and will close. Today, I downloaded the newest update of NVDA and yet the problem is still persisting.
I unloaded NVDA and brought up JAWS. With JAWS running I am able to swap between folders without any delay so I am convinced that NDA is causing the problem.
Before loading JAWS, I had a very full outlook .pst file and reduced that from 1.2g to 200mb. I have no addins so that can't be the cause. Has anyone experienced this problem? Is there a known solution?
I would really value a response as I much prefer to use NVDA rather than JAWS!
All the best,

Re the voices someone asked about, although I think that person ended up being on Windows 7, it is possible, for those on Windows 10, to get additional OneCore voices than the initial ones you have available. To do that you need to install additional languages in Windows, as well as the speech pack for any language you install. In English for instance, there is not just English UK and English US, but also Australia, New Zealand, Canada etc, which each come with different voices you may like to try.
Regards
Quentin.

Hi Vijay, Since you are using a laptop without a NumPad, you may have the laptop keyboard layout selected. In this case, NVDA+A is the keystroke you need to press to issue a say all. Thanks.

I do also have the speech hub package if you want it as well but the add on will have to be installed as well. I can give directions for that one but they are in english for voices etc. Just let me know if you are interested in this one to.

Re: [NVDA stopping Outlook 2016

Hi Cearbhall,
I am experiencing the stopping of outlook. I did not test with jaws. However, I have switched to an insider build of Office which has mitigated the problem to an extent.

Re: Creating backups of dvd's?
I use iso recorder. Only thing is if the disc has any kind of copy protection on it it will not create the iso image. You could look at any dvd, which basically plays the disc through it and removes the copy protection. I don’t know how much it is now, but it really works and I use the two together when needed with no trouble. Good luck and let me know if need any more help. Rich

One great thing I've just noticed about
this new version of NVDA is the problem with mIRC has been fixed!
It no longer messes it up and I've disabled it's own speech and
switched it back to nvda. This is so much better as it is faster
and I can use the synth of my choice.
