I was under the impression that Windows 10s can be upgraded to the full version for people who need more than Narrator to run due to a disability.

Of course how fast a stripped down machine might run in this situation is debatable and to be honest I simply do not see the point of 10s in any way, just as with chromebooks. Since hardware is getting so relatively cheap they might as well build it all into the machine and have done with it.

Hi,

Yes and no. Yes, as it is part of UWP, and no, because NVDA can’t run on Windows 10 S for now. There is a project under investigation that’ll be more meaningful in the long run.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Chris,

Firstly, welcome to the list!

Windows 10 OCR is available for every version of Windows 10, and yes, it runs completely offline.

I saw a post from Feb last year, about the November (2015) update saying how Microsoft had added some new languages, which brought the total at the time, up to 25 languages. You might need at least a particular build of Windows 10 if you are using non-English languages, but I can't find a list.

First of all, I'm new to the list and this is my first post. I have a couple questions about the new OCR feature.

1. Does it work on all versions of Windows 10 or just the Creators version and newer?

This release is awesome! It's one of the best ones I've experienced in my 6 or so years of using NVDA.

Hi Dennis,

Good question. The answer, I believe, would be unfortunately not. The OCR functionality we are using, like the OneCore voices, are built-in to Windows 10. If Microsoft ever made them available in earlier versions, then we could use them, sure. In earlier versions of Windows prior to Windows 10, you can still use the OCR Add-on available from https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/ocr.en.html

Re: what in the world is happening with firefox and nvda

Gene

There is no need to check about accessibility.  This may be the same problem that has been discussed a number of times over the last number of weeks with a certain brand of laptops.  You may have to register some dll files that aren't registered in this brand or perhaps in this brand and model.  What brand of laptop is it?  I'll let others who keep track of the problem in detail as far as the procedure to register the dll files discuss the matter further.

Firefox is accessible in XP and in all later versions of Windows unless there is a technical problem.

Re: How do i activate unclickable linkis?

hi.
in these situations that i cant open one link, i press application key
on that link, then use copy link location, press control+tab to open a
new tab and peist my address!
this method works for me most of times.
i disabled javascript and i only use mozilla firefox.

On 8/26/17, Gene <gsasner@ripco.com> wrote:
These are not necessarily mouse over links. Whether a link is a mouse over
link has nothing to do with whether it can be activated in the usual way. A
mouse over link shows additional information when the mouse is hovered over
it. But it is followed in exactly the same way as any other link.

If a link doesn't activate, two things in addition to what you have tried
are:
Use the command shift enter on the link. If something like a browser popup
blocker is keeping it from opening, shift enter may allow the link to open
in a new Window. Once you are finished using the page, you can close it
with alt f4 and be back in the other window.
If that doesn't work, turn off browse mode with NVDA key space. Then try
following the link with enter. Some links don't work unless browse mode is
off. Return to browse mode if you aren't automatically returned if the page
loads, by pressing escape. You can use NVDA key space to return to browse
mode but escape is more convenient.

On some websites I find links that don't respond to either the enter key or
the NVDA key hat simulates a left mouse
click. I assume that these are mouse-over links, but there must be a way to
actibate them. For example, in the New
American Bible I place my cursor on the link to Ruth, but I can't open the
book. This happens in both
Firefox and Microsoft Edge.

OK this is probably going to sound a bit daft coming from one of the main offenders of this here, but at least I can see it happening to others and want to help keep the peace!

Hi could I ask that when you have comments on one thread, that you put them into as few posts as possible. I know I've been accused of running off comments as if this is a chat line and it irritates others and generates lots of messages crossing over each other with similar content as well.

Make a mental note of replies in your thread and put them into one reply or as few as possible. also do not change the meaning of a subject thread without trying to indicate in the subject line that its morphed a bit.
I'm mindful of those who have to wade through these and may then mask out your messages and then never see one that might be relevant later on.
I'm going back to sleep now.

it's not hard to fined something better than Microsoft Sam. That's
not
saying much, to say that a voice is better than one of the worst ones.
I
played with two free voices and I don't like either but they are
better,
as
are most voices, than Microsoft Sam. The better of the two I played
with
is
Softvoice.
The worse of the two is Svox pico synthesizer. These are both NVDA

are
limited to NVDA. I believe a lot of the free voices on the NVDA page
are
add ons but I haven't looked at enough to know that, it's just my
suspicion.
I believe you said you want a voice to use with other programs than
NVDA.
If so, neither voice I discussed will be suitable.

All I can say is that you can look at the voices and see if any might
meet
your needs, then try them.

The NVDA page with voices is

Re: How do i activate unclickable linkis?

Gene

These are not necessarily mouse over links.  Whether a link is a mouse over link has nothing to do with whether it can be activated in the usual way.  A mouse over link shows additional information when the mouse is hovered over it.  But it is followed in exactly the same way as any other link.

If a link doesn't activate, two things in addition to what you have tried are:
Use the command shift enter on the link.  If something like a browser popup blocker is keeping it from opening, shift enter may allow the link to open in a new Window.  Once you are finished using the page, you can close it with alt f4 and be back in the other window.
If that doesn't work, turn off browse mode with NVDA key space.  Then try following the link with enter.  Some links don't work unless browse mode is off.  Return to browse mode if you aren't automatically returned if the page loads, by pressing escape.  You can use NVDA key space to return to browse mode but escape is more convenient.

Subject: [nvda] How do i activate unclickable linkis?

On some websites I find links that don't respond to either the enter key or the NVDA key hat simulates a left mouse
click. I assume that these are mouse-over links, but there must be a way to actibate them. For example, in the New
American Bible I place my cursor on the link to Ruth, but I can't open the book. This happens in both
Firefox and Microsoft Edge.

Which extra voices do you mean?

If you are running Windows 10, you already have the OneCore voices.

If you are not running Windows 10, those voices are not available.

I've never heard of any extra voices for OneCore other than those

Well asking others this is what I'm told. Yes but you must set it each time and probably need to run as admin depending on the account you are logged into when you use the stick.
For my bit, I'll say i found portable version access to windows 10 disappointing compared to windows 7. Apparently this is due to better security protection on portable programs not getting access to core code directly.

Hi there,
Sorry. My bad. Yes, I'm on Windows 7 64-bit.
It seems to be more laggy on the run dialog than anywhere else, when navigating through any of its text. It also seems to lag a little when reaching the beginning of a text field and arrowing up or left, or at the end of a text field when arrowing down or right, before informing you that you're at the end.
This seems to be with NVDA2017.3. I have attempted several restarts of both NVDA and the system with no differences, however after downgrading back to 2017.2 it works normally again.
Cheers.

Well since I use Master branch, I'd have expected to have seen this a long
time ago then, and actually in Windows 7, it is actually snappier than in
the old original release.
Can you define if there are times it happens and times it does not. IE I do
sometimes notice that if an office product is open in the background, this
can slow things like this down, even when its not doing anything but just
resting.
I put this down to video issues.

Has anyone else noticed a delay when arrowing over text fields? It appears
to be most significant when reaching the beginning or end of a field, or if
text is being rehighlighted such as in the run dialog.

Re: what in the world is happening with firefox and nvda

Joe_L

Hi All,
I'm new to the group and to NVDA, I'm a sighted user learning and setting up for someone else.

I've just completed a new install of NVDA and Firefox 55.0.2 onto a Windows 10 Home 64bit laptop (HP Envy). In Firefox I cannot navigate properly, for example pressing H does not take me to the next heading and neither can I navigate to specific paragraphs to speak them. I'm using the Focus Highlight add-on and the green highlight rectangle does not appear in Firefox, but it does appear in other apps e.g. file explorer where I get both the red and green highlight rectangles. If I go back to Firefox I get no green rectangle again. For comparison I have been testing NVDA on Windows 7 and it works properly, if I press H I get a green rectangle over a heading and can down-arrow to the following paragraph (also FF55.0.2).

One critical point here I have just discovered - on Windows 10 if I launch FF first and NVDA afterwards I get the problem. If I launch NVDA first and FF second it seems to be OK (needs more testing to prove this is robust...). On Windows 7 launch order is unimportant.

Regards
Joe

I'm still using LibreOffice 5.2, even with its issues, because Microsoft Office is very expensive here n Brazil and, for what I have to do, LibreOffice suits me better.

Also, I am using LibreOffice for many years and know almost all the keyboard shortcuts, all of them very different in MS Office. As I needed to start using a screen reader a few years ago, only recently became aware of NVDA issues in conjunction with LibreOffice.

Another option is Google Docs and Google Sheets etc.

Yes there are potential bugs with the different office suites, and it
depends on exactly what you need to do as to which will best suit your
needs. For instance, yes the mouse bug I mentioned in LibreOffice
causes a fairly bad crash, but if you are a user who doesn't use the

focus thing at one point moving through the text. I
didn't find a concrete way to reproduce that. It's
annoying, but it didn't bring the system down or
anything. The focus itself was still in the document, so
I could still move around and edit, it was just that NVDA
wasn't reading properly so I expect it wouldn't be evident
with NVDA not running. Nothing untoward in the NVDA log
though. I have noticed occasional issues with LibreOffice
so not sure if this is related to using a Word 2003 doc,
or just a general LIbreOffice thing.

Hi Chris,

Firstly, welcome to the list!

Windows 10 OCR is available for every version of Windows 10, and yes, it
runs completely offline.

I saw a post from Feb last year, about the November (2015) update saying
how Microsoft had added some new languages, which brought the total at
the
time, up to 25 languages. You might need at least a particular build of
Windows 10 if you are using non-English languages, but I can't find a
list.

Regards

Quentin.

Hi,

First of all, I'm new to the list and this is my first post. I have a
couple questions about the new OCR feature.

1. Does it work on all versions of Windows 10 or just the Creators
version
and newer?
2. Does this work even if you're offline?

This release is awesome! It's one of the best ones I've experienced in
my
6 or so years of using NVDA.

Hi Dennis,

Good question. The answer, I believe, would be unfortunately not. The
OCR functionality we are using, like the OneCore voices, are built-in to
Windows 10. If Microsoft ever made them available in earlier versions,
then we could use them, sure. In earlier versions of Windows prior to
Windows 10, you can still use the OCR Add-on available from
https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/ocr.en.html

Re: whats the best sapi5 voice for english?

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

As has been said.
A: you wont get really good ones for free and..
B: if you are not using a fast pc, the lag may well be far too great. In fact in the case of a very slow machine 1ghz with less than 2 gig memory, the actual voice glitches as the system cannot cope with the demand.

What was it Mr Scot used to say in Star Trek? Ye canno change the rules of Phisics!

But your subject line asks what's the best voice for English. I don't

where you might get information about farsi voices. Does E-Speak support
farsi? If so, there is a SAPI 5 version of ESpeak.

You could look up different synthesizers doing Google searches such as
DecTalk farsi. But perhaps a better way in terms of efficiency to find
something is to do a Google search for something like speech synthesizer
farsi or free speech synthesizer farsi and see what results you get.
You
might change your subject line and ask the question again here. Your
initial subject line may have caused those who may know about farsi to
skip
the question.

it's not hard to fined something better than Microsoft Sam. That's not
saying much, to say that a voice is better than one of the worst ones.
I
played with two free voices and I don't like either but they are better,
as
are most voices, than Microsoft Sam. The better of the two I played
with
is
Softvoice.
The worse of the two is Svox pico synthesizer. These are both NVDA Add
Ons
so and I think you said you want SAPI 5 voices. Being add ons, they are
limited to NVDA.

There are many free ones and many you pay for. I have no idea if you
would
consider any of the free ones satisfactory. I haven't tried many. The
ones
I've tried, I thought weren't very good but they may be bettter than
what
you are using now. And what people like in terms of speech is
subjective
and varies widely.

How do i activate unclickable linkis?

John J. Boyer

Thanks,
John
