hay I was wondering if any of you know of a good program for reading and opening PDF files.  I don't know if adobe still works or if you have to pay for it.  Just let me know.

Fixed (I think!) - in my case it was 64 bit Firefox causing the problem, when I uninstalled this and installed 32bit  Firefox it seems much better.

It seems the latest versions of Firefox push a 64 bit install onto any 64 bit operating system. Could this explain why people using the beta saw the problem? In my case it was a new install of FF onto my Win 10 laptop so it gave me the 64 bit version. After uninstalling and a reboot for good measure it took some hunting to find the real 32 bit download (there's a link on the main mozilla download landing page that still installed a 64 bit version).

Hi, I'm using win 7 home addition. I downloaded the latest version of NVDA. It works just fine. Yes it does benefit win ten. There's no reason why it wont work for 7. If you hear something like windows app ignore it its just for ten. It does work for 7.

Hi,
A less talked about feature in 2017.3 is ability to move between spelling errors in Microsoft Word (W/Shift+W), along with significant changes to braille output, and of course, braille input. Although I haven't found a way to do it, I still would like to let Windows 7 and 8.x users hear sounds when suggestions appear, and for Windows 8.x, treat Start screen suggestion items the same way as Windows 10 Start menu suggestions (it is doable).

If you are interested I have the speech platform synth and voices in my drop box account. You need to install the synth run time thingy first then the tts voices after.

They are in a zip format at present but after the synth run time thingy has been installed there are quite a few different voices and languages to pick from.

Yes that can get very annoying and I tend to just ignore messages from
those who do that sort of thing constantly. Especially since they
appear to also ignore responses and just cntinue to vacuously send the
same message again and again. I recall on a different list one of
these people was told to please stop doing that by someone who was
obviously quite irritated by it.

played with two free voices and I don't like either but they are

The worse of the two is Svox pico synthesizer. These are both NVDA

so and I think you said you want SAPI 5 voices. Being add ons, they
are
limited to NVDA. I believe a lot of the free voices on the NVDA
page
are
add ons but I haven't looked at enough to know that, it's just my
suspicion.
I believe you said you want a voice to use with other programs than
NVDA.
If so, neither voice I discussed will be suitable.

All I can say is that you can look at the voices and see if any
might
meet
your needs, then try them.

isn't clear if the performance problems only happen when you run NVDA or if they

Yes you can, but having bought Office I now would have to buy it again. its a pity if you have an old copy that you cannot just pay an upgrade price, but i suspect the upgrade from 2002, might be as much as a new one!
I happen to like 2003/2 version of Word. I'm not going to get you started on ribbons again honest.

I tested OpenOffice some time ago and it was still worse than LibreOffice.

I'm still using LibreOffice 5.2, even with its issues, because Microsoft
Office is very expensive here n Brazil and, for what I have to do,
LibreOffice suits me better.

Also, I am using LibreOffice for many years and know almost all the
keyboard shortcuts, all of them very different in MS Office. As I needed
to start using a screen reader a few years ago, only recently became aware
of NVDA issues in conjunction with LibreOffice.

Yes there are potential bugs with the different office suites, and it
depends on exactly what you need to do as to which will best suit your
needs. For instance, yes the mouse bug I mentioned in LibreOffice
causes a fairly bad crash, but if you are a user who doesn't use the
mouse, then you won't encounter it.

Normally add ons are not the issue with Firefox. it seems to be pretty good at not letting them screw up the system.  Most of the time the problem could be  registration of dlls after a uninstall or the item I posted about in a new thread and implicated some words!

I've just completed a new install of NVDA and Firefox 55.0.2 onto a Windows
10 Home 64bit laptop (HP Envy). In Firefox I cannot navigate properly, for
example pressing H does not take me to the next heading and neither can I
navigate to specific paragraphs to speak them. I'm using the Focus Highlight
add-on and the green highlight rectangle does not appear in Firefox, but it
does appear in other apps e.g. file explorer where I get both the red and
green highlight rectangles. If I go back to Firefox I get no green rectangle
again. For comparison I have been testing NVDA on Windows 7 and it works
properly, if I press H I get a green rectangle over a heading and can
down-arrow to the following paragraph (also FF55.0.2).

One critical point here I have just discovered - on Windows 10 if I launch
FF first and NVDA afterwards I get the problem. If I launch NVDA first and
FF second it seems to be OK (needs more testing to prove this is robust...).
On Windows 7 launch order is unimportant.

Steps to reproduce:
This can only be reproduced on a small amount of machines running Windows 10 Creaters Update.
While NVDA is running:
. Start Firefox and navigate a page with NVDA browse mode
. Restart NVDA
. Move back to Firefox and try and navigate the page.
Browse mode will not be available due to NVDA not being able to queryService to IAccessibleApplication to fetch the Gecko version.

Confirmed here as well. I usually notice it after an NVDA update which
of course would be a restart of NVDA.

Note that #5758 has similar symptoms, but is very different technically and can be worked around. It'd be good if those of you who believe you are experiencing this can do the following:
1. Switch to another application that isn't a Mozilla application. You may need to start another application if you don't have another open.
2. Restart NVDA.
3. Now switch back to the Mozilla application.
If you're experiencing #5758, everything will now work as expected. If you're experiencing this new issue (#7269), nothing will fix things except restarting the Mozilla app.

confirmed on windows 10 (64-bit) build 15063.413 last firefox (54.0.1 - 32-bit) and NVDA (last next snapshot).
This problem has been detected for a while.

confirmed with NVDA 2017.3 and firefox 55..0.3. I have been experiencing this for a while, and our Arabic speaking users confirm this as well.

The thing is that it seems to be that even older outlooks suffer from this crash or freeze in different places, and if it could be tackled from the nvda side it might help those who cannot really afford to buy the latest and greatest version of Office. Just thought I'd put that point. I myself do not use Outlook, so I'm not affected here.

I am experiencing the stopping of outlook. I did not test with jaws. However, I have switched to an insider build of Office which has mitigated the problem to an extent.

I think many bought DVDs, Blue Rays etc are now rip protected by including intentional errors that can be ignored during playing but trip up pirates copy programs. its an old dodge borrowed from the old floppy protection routines. another is non standard formatting with a patch that only works when playing the disc.


I don't think we would want to suggest dodgy software here, but if its a legal copy and its not working them it probably might be better put on a forum about the subject than on here.
