It appears the problem was that when nvda was restarted with firefox running part of the accessibility system could no longer get access to the routines as Firefox had locked them down. the answer is to reboot firefox when this happens. I think the devs are looking for a way around it, but in the end it may need Firefox to fix something. its hard to follow as there are at least three interconnected tickets and some of the problems also affect Thunderbird as the same basic code is in both.

Hi, the firefox problem was still there, but I did some testing and after a bit of mucking about it seems that once I did the update it broke the firefox profile I deleted it and it is working well now. this was a bigger problem for me because I use my own portable install with all addons. and the broken ff profile was in the installer fixed now. but I wonder if the new nvda renders web pages a little differently from the last stable version? as each time I reverted back to stable version it just worked but anyway all fixed now.

Its obvious from what we have seen here that its not just the simple non registration of DLL files bug, or the use of beta versions of Firefox. However there has to be something that makes these installations different to everyone elses.

Adobe reader is still free.
Its not so much the reading of them that is the main issue, its the attitude and knowledge of those making pdfs that has to change.
All too often files are untagged for changes in reading order, say when different numbers of columns exist through the document or in some cases people simply scan in a picture of text and make the whole pdf an unreadable document without eyes, and often its so badly scanned that OCR makes it into Klingon.

If you want a text based pdf reader, you could do far worse than the one on the webbie web site. It just works. It has no way to correct for the madness of the file creator though....

Not in my case as i downloaded the direct link, not that one from the mozilla web site.

I'm back on 55 non beta now again.
I think though that they should allow the choice of 32 or 64 bit at install time.
Often add ons won't work in the 64 bit version and hence different versions need to be downloaded. In my view there is little to be gained in the 64 bit version for most normal users.

Fixed (I think!) - in my case it was 64 bit Firefox causing the problem, when I uninstalled this and installed 32bit Firefox it seems much better.

It seems the latest versions of Firefox push a 64 bit install onto any 64 bit operating system. Could this explain why people using the beta saw the problem? In my case it was a new install of FF onto my Win 10 laptop so it gave me the 64 bit version. After uninstalling and a reboot for good measure it took some hunting to find the real 32 bit download (there's a link on the main mozilla download landing page that still installed a 64 bit version).

Hope this helps,
Joe

Re: windows 7 and new n v d a release

Heck its even running fine on XP as well, though only subtle changes exist there I think. Its certainly no worse from my viewpoint. It seems smoother all round in Firefox versions to me. It will, shock horror even work on Internet Explorer 8!
I know as I had to use it yesterday with a current next snap, and there were no issues or errors at all when I downloaded some files from an old site that seemed to work in old versions of browsers.

Some people on here are having issues with firefox and I think I posted about this a bit earlier today, but seeing as I cannot see the problems here, they will have to go to github and add to the relevent tickets if it cannot be solved.

I have for example noticed that windows will often slow down if an automatic back up is in progress. You would not normally know this was going on of course and it to some extent depends on how and what to you aare backing up. also sometimes some virus scanners can eat resources if they scan incoming files or do scans with ahigh priority setting.
This was why I kicked out Avast originally.

Also, from the way your message is written, it isn't clear if the performance problems only happen when you run NVDA or if they occur in general. You said you are new to NVDA but you didn't say if these are general problems or only present when you run NVDA.

Yes that can get very annoying and I tend to just ignore messages from
those who do that sort of thing constantly. Especially since they
appear to also ignore responses and just cntinue to vacuously send the
same message again and again. I recall on a different list one of
these people was told to please stop doing that by someone who was
obviously quite irritated by it.

Hi could I ask that when you have comments on one thread, that you put them

into as few posts as possible. I know I've been accused of running off
comments as if this is a chat line and it irritates others and generates
lots of messages crossing over each other with similar content as well.

Make a mental note of replies in your thread and put them into one reply or

as few as possible. also do not change the meaning of a subject thread
without trying to indicate in the subject line that its morphed a bit.
I'm mindful of those who have to wade through these and may then mask out
your messages and then never see one that might be relevant later on.
I'm going back to sleep now.

You could look up different synthesizers doing Google searches such

it's not hard to fined something better than Microsoft Sam. That's
not
saying much, to say that a voice is better than one of the worst
ones.
I
played with two free voices and I don't like either but they are
better,
as
are most voices, than Microsoft Sam. The better of the two I played
with
is
Softvoice.
The worse of the two is Svox pico synthesizer. These are both NVDA

so and I think you said you want SAPI 5 voices. Being add ons, they
are
limited to NVDA. I believe a lot of the free voices on the NVDA
page
are
add ons but I haven't looked at enough to know that, it's just my
suspicion.
I believe you said you want a voice to use with other programs than
NVDA.
If so, neither voice I discussed will be suitable.

All I can say is that you can look at the voices and see if any
might
meet
your needs, then try them.

The NVDA page with voices is

Yes I never really know whether to bother with this suggestion thingy. I had assumed that these were all bespoke to the program generating them, and as such needed app modules for each, if this is not the case then OK.

Hi,
A less talked about feature in 2017.3 is ability to move between spelling errors in Microsoft Word (W/Shift+W), along with significant changes to braille output, and of course, braille input. Although I haven't found a way to do it, I still would like to let Windows 7 and 8.x users hear sounds when suggestions appear, and for Windows 8.x, treat Start screen suggestion items the same way as Windows 10 Start menu suggestions (it is doable).
Cheers,
Joseph

It's very possible that it was the 64-bit version of firefox.

Hope this helps,
Joe
