Well I'm going to have to keep my clunkers on xp, since they are too slow, but basically the current version of nvda is now very capable indeed so its not such a loss. I'll probably get thae last master or next snap that will still work and stop updates there.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to upgrade to w7 fully now.
It was fun while it lasted.

How much memory has your computer got and are you using the 32 bit or 64 bit version of Firefox?
Might be wise for me to say that 4 gigs is definitely slow compared to 8 when you start opening tabs, escpecially if javascript is active on a fair number of them.
Also some people say the 64 bit version is more capable, but have never tried it as I don't think I would open more than about four on a session.

thanks nasrin, but it's not opening any new tabs, just jumping me over to one of my other open tabs. Brian may well be right that I just have too many open! They are all tabs that I currently need to keep an eye on, so to speak. They are a mixture of information that I need as I prepare my Masters application, my social media (Twitter-related and FB), and numerous poetry submissions and competitions that I'm preparing documents for, so they are all 'active' which it's easier to find as an open tab rather than naviogating up and down the bookmarks list every time I want to look back over the info. I've been a huge fan of tabbed browsers ever since the Netcaptor shell for IE, that introduced tabs back in 1995, long before the likes of Opera, Netscape and IE followed suit ... I guess I just got accustomed to haveing a multitude of tabs open! To be fair, apart from the slow process of each tab having to load as I open Firefox and select re-open last browsing session, I don't find Firefox slows down any great extent by having 36 tabs open :)

yes.
but havent used 7 in a long long time almost 4 years so forgot if it
truly does that.
however it does.
if you type winver in the run dialog and if it says build 6701 or
something it was an 01 build then you have sp1.
if it says 00 in the last 2 digits then no sp1

Dear NVDA community:

If you are using one of the following Windows versions, please read the
following statement from NV Access (just published):

* Windows XP
* Windows Server 2003
* Windows Vista
* Windows Server 2008
* Windows 7 without service pack 1

The announcement link:

https://www.nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2017-4-drops-support-for-older-operating-
systems/

Background: for a number of years, NV Access and other developers
received
tons of reports about browse mode not being available when you restart
NVDA
while using Firefox and some browsers. NV Access wrote a fix for it, but
it
used a routine not found in older operating systems (specifically,
Windows
XP). Porting the new routine is costly, especially when developers cannot
guarantee that it'll work for everyone. Because the fix impacts many
people,
coupled with the support status of the Windows versions listed above,
coupled with the fact that Firefox and some popular programs ended
support
for old Windows releases (including some screen readers), NV Access has
decided to end support for old Windows releases with NVDA 2017.3. 2017.3
will still be made available for download for people who need to use old
Windows versions.

Thus, the following advisory from the community is in effect:

* If you are using Windows versions listed above, turn off automatic
NVDA updates (NVDA menu/Preferences/General, then uncheck the update
checkbox).
* For those using some add-ons, read follow-up advisories regarding
support for old Windows releases from add-ons from add-on writers (for
those
using add-ons such as Resource Monitor, I will publish an advisory next
week).

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

hi.
this may be caused by an old version of elequence.
before you update switch to espeak then upgrade and then switch back.
also do a restart of your laptop.
i dont mean shutdown and restart.
i mean a full restart.

you need to alt tab.

On the other hand, the other way you can handle this is download the

Re: NVDA and friends

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Well the service basically helps with stuff like secure and log on screens, the helper is the loader and helps when things need to be reinitialised. The Uia bits make the system rely on or not rely on uia but as for the others, I do not know myself.
Many programs have multiple exe files, this is quite normal. Often the problem you mention can be seen in task manager as some process hogging the resources for whatever reason. Its not always, indeed hardly ever, nvda in my experience, its some service or the anti virus or back up or a web browser usually.

If you are saying it fixes things by rebooting nvda, then this would need some diagnostics. it might be that something you are using is encountering one of the slow down bugs still present in UI A.

Needs somebody more expert than I, but a glance at log in debug mode often shows up a lot of watchdog activity wasting a lot of time.

Hi,
It’s rare, but wondering if anyone else has stumbled across this.
Sometimes NVDA will seem to just lose control. There is no pattern as to when this could happen, though it does seem to happen a lot at system startup. The “NVDA” key no longer executes NVDA functions and speech will become rather rusty, not speaking some things at all and not interrupting prior messages. In these cases I either have to completely kill it with task manager or run NVDA with the –q or -r switches. Then again, there was a rare problem where the –r switch sometimes didn’t fix the issue, you literally had to use -q (or the actual exit option if you could get to it) and restart it manually. Not sure if this was the same problem, but still. Seems pretty bizarre.
Also, what are all the executables for? During normal operation, I see three in the task manager, nvda.exe, nvda_eoaProxy.exe and nvdaHelperRemoteLoader.exe. In addition in the NVDA directory, there is nvda_service.exe, nvda_slave.exe, nvda_noUIAccess.exe and nvda_UIAccess.exe. I’m guessing the latter two are different builds of nvda.exe?
Incidentally, unloading nvdaHelperRemoteLoader.exe seems to disable keyboard echo for a lot of things. Wondering if another of its components crashing or freezing or whatever is causing the other problems?
I have recently started running NVDA in debugging mode to try and figure out what exactly causes these bizarre issues, haven’t found anything of yet. Especially since it is quite rare that it happens.
Cheers.
Damien.

Re: NVDA or Firefox issue

Gene

For sighted people it makes sense that some people might want a lot of tabs opened.  they can see and immediately click on any tab they want to move to.  Blind people can't do that as a practical matter.  I agree with use of bookmarks, especially with the Firefox book marks feature that allows you to search for any book mark quickly and conveniently.

If you have enough site to work with bookmarks and a mouse, this message doesn't apply to you.  But the more book marks you have set to open automatically as home pages, the longer it takes the browser to open each time you close it because it has to open every tab you have set as a home page every time.

I think maybe you just have too many tabs open. One assumes if focus lags and that tab comes to the fore for whatever reason, it could be that you interact with it, rather than the other one Personally any more than five open gives me a headache. I tend to just use bookmarks and let the page load if I'm not interested in itall the time. to me Tabs are for things you want to keep an eye on so to speak.

Subject: [nvda] NVDA or Firefox issue

I read a couple of threads on here about issues with Firefox and I wonder if anybody has any idea what might be going on with my NVDA / Firefox situation.

My Firefox updated to 55.0.3 (32-bit) yesterday, and I updated to NVDA 17.3 earlier this week. The problem began occuring prior to this, maybe two months ago, however, so it's not directly caused by either upgrade.

I use gmail in its basic view setting, and most of the time it works perfectly. But occasionaly it's started, when I hit enter to open a message, it throws me out into a tab about 8 tabs further away. The tab it moves me to is for a Masters degree program that I want to apply for next year, so I can't figure out any connection between my gmail tab and that one! The tab in question is http://www.swansea.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/applyingforamastersdegree/

It is always that tab, and it doesn't matter if I've opened other tabs between gmail and that tab, like tonight I've got an additional two Blind Mice Mega Mall tabs open ... it's always dropping me into the Masters info tab.

I also can't figure out why it's only occasional emails that do this. Most open fine when I hit enter, and I stay on the email page, from where I press the number 2 a couple of times to navigate down to the message Heading 2, but the times it throws me out of the tab there aren't any level 2 headings on that page!

Would love any suggestions if anybody has experienced anything similar. I do currently have 36 tabs open in Firefox,if that has any bearing on the matter.

Thanks,

Giles

Yes make a portable version and see what happens when its run on the new machine. that would be my first step.
As its been running I'd suggest something is corrupted myself, though its pretty good at spotting .ini file issues mixed up versions of files or locked files often defeat the installer, I've noticed.
At least if you keep ap a portable version with all the right settings set, you should if it won't install from that copy, be able to do a total removal and use the portable version to do a clean install. I've done this only yesterday, in fact on xp after the bun fight over the installer crash in xp.

Incidentally I had no problem updating NVDA on my second laptop which

Hi Arlene

It depends how you have configured IE.  The  default search engine I’m describing in my post is what is used whenever yu search using the address bar.  In IE you configure this in the Manage add-ons entry of the tools menu, in Edge you do it as I described.  In all browsers, you can also specify google.com as your home page and use the google search engine from there.   The more modern browsers like Chrome, Firefox and Edge have introduced Start-up pages as well as having the home page and address bar.  The start-up pages are displayed when you first open the browser, the home pages are displayed whenever you press alt+home  and the address bar is accessed using alt+d for entering URL’s or searches.  I think it is important to understand the distinction between them to enable you to utilise the available features when configuring your browsers of choice.

Cheers

Chris

Is this is what you have to do when you use Google or any other search engine if you are on Edge? Or can you just do it like you would in 7 just go to IE and type in your search?

Hi Scot

The instructions you have given will open a page when you first open Edge rather than set the default search engine.  I have included what I sent to Anthony to do this.

Anthony

This is not difficult to do but there are quite a few steps to doing it and the buttons you want are quite a long way down the settings pages, so be prepared to do a lot of tabbing.

  1. Open the Edge browser
  2. Press alt+x
  3. Press up arrow once and you should land on ‘Settings’, press enter
  4. Press tab repeatedly until you find ‘View Advanced Settings’ button, then press enter
  5. Press tab repeatedly until you find ‘Change search Engine’ button, then press enter
  6. Use tab key to find list of available engines, then use up/down arrows to navigate list
  7. Select the engine you want, press tab once and press enter on the ‘set as default’ button
  8. Press tab and find the ‘Back’ button then press enter
  9. Use tab and  find the ‘Back’ button on the next screenand press enter
  10. You should now be back on the ‘View Advanced Settings’ button, press escape button (top left of your keyboard)
  11. You should now be on the ‘Settings and More’ button, press tab and you will return to the web page you were viewing before you edited Settings

Cheers

Hi.

I will try to help you.

I don’t know all there is to know so I had to try this one for myself to make sure it worked.

Open Microsoft edge.

From the address bar which you can get to by pressing control d, tab until you here settings and more and press space to enter that option.
Then tab again until you get to another icon called settings and hit spacebar again.

Tab until you hear open Microsoft edge with.

There are three options there, but the one you want is a specific page.

Arrow down until you hear nvda say a specific page then tab and type in the url of the site you want.

Then tab to save.

That should be it.

Let me know how that works and good luck.

3: When the list of programs pops up use first letter navigation letter m until you hear Microsoft edge.

4: Hit the context menu key or shift f 10.

And there you go.

Dear NVDA community:

If you are using one of the following Windows versions, please read the
following statement from NV Access (just published):

* Windows XP
* Windows Server 2003
* Windows Vista
* Windows Server 2008
* Windows 7 without service pack 1

The announcement link:

https://www.nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2017-4-drops-support-for-older-operating-
systems/

Background: for a number of years, NV Access and other developers received
tons of reports about browse mode not being available when you restart NVDA
while using Firefox and some browsers. NV Access wrote a fix for it, but it
used a routine not found in older operating systems (specifically, Windows
XP). Porting the new routine is costly, especially when developers cannot
guarantee that it'll work for everyone. Because the fix impacts many people,
coupled with the support status of the Windows versions listed above,
coupled with the fact that Firefox and some popular programs ended support
for old Windows releases (including some screen readers), NV Access has
decided to end support for old Windows releases with NVDA 2017.3. 2017.3
will still be made available for download for people who need to use old
Windows versions.

Thus, the following advisory from the community is in effect:

* If you are using Windows versions listed above, turn off automatic
NVDA updates (NVDA menu/Preferences/General, then uncheck the update
checkbox).
* For those using some add-ons, read follow-up advisories regarding
support for old Windows releases from add-ons from add-on writers (for those
using add-ons such as Resource Monitor, I will publish an advisory next
week).

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: Important announcement: NVDA 2017.3 is the last version to support Windows versions prior to 7 and Server 2008 R2 service pack 1

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

I did point out to Mick that this has been handled badly, as I seem to have been the first to encounter a complete bricking of an xp machine. Its not so much that I mind it happening myself, as obviously we all see fewer and fewer pieces of software allowing use on XP/Vista, but to me, before the pointer had been moved, it should have been [publicised, Indeed, it would have been best to only move Next.
I wonder if there is perhaps some leeway here?
For example, the last Master to support XP could be made into the last version supporting it via some subtle name change, ie nvda20017.3XP, which would be the very last one for xp and kept separate.
Of course if anyone out there with a significant investment in keeping nvda going on XP etc, wanted to make special versions, then I'm assuming that would be fine as long as they themselves handled any security and other reliability and translation issues.
Similarly, add ons that will still run on old versions should be flagged. I'm quite happy if pointed at the right links to test things in XP machines.
Of course this also means that the later versions of NVDA will probably not have the switch that allows them to run on old processors that do not have the sse2 instruction set either.
Could I also ask that versions of snaps running on xp, ie if somebody tries to download one that may not work, be made to just display a message?
The current crash may well brick the machine as it kind of locks things up with no speech till you can get rid of the error box.
Spotting this in the loader should be possible???

Just a few ideas.

thanks nasrin, but it's not opening any new tabs, just jumping me over to one of my other open tabs. To be fair, apart from the slow process of each tab having to load as I open Firefox and select re-open last browsing session, I don't find Firefox slows down any great extent by having 36 tabs open :)

yes.
but havent used 7 in a long long time almost 4 years so forgot if it
truly does that.
however it does.
if you type winver in the run dialog and if it says build 6701 or
something it was an 01 build then you have sp1.
if it says 00 in the last 2 digits then no sp1

tons of reports about browse mode not being available when you restart
NVDA
while using Firefox and some browsers.

NVDA updates (NVDA menu/Preferences/General, then uncheck the update
checkbox).
* For those using some add-ons, read follow-up advisories regarding
support for old Windows releases from add-ons from add-on writers (for
those
using add-ons such as Resource Monitor, I will publish an advisory next
week).

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: Unable to Install NVDA 17.3 on HP laptop

Austin Pinto <austinpinto.xaviers@...>

hi.
this may be caused by an old version of elequence.
before you update switch to espeak then upgrade and then switch back.
also do a restart of your laptop.
i dont mean shutdown and restart.
i mean a full restart.

Hmmm did you try to alt tab a few times.

Sometimes I get a uac prompt, usually it pops up but if I for example
have more than a couple windows open then it may be hidden.

The trick is to know how long something should take to download and if
you heard the completed sound or think it should be well should be, then
you need to alt tab.

On the other hand, the other way you can handle this is download the
main exe file, close everything window wise and run that.

The update downloaded fine and then stated that my existing copy would
be updated and asked me to click OK which I did. After that I keep
getting a message saying "please wait-your existing copy of NVDA is
being updated" and this goes on repeating with simultaneous beeps
indefinitely untill finally it says that the update installation
failed. How do I get over this problem? Should I remove the existing
copy of NVDA and install a fresh copy from scratch?

Alternatively, is it possible to make a portable copy from my other
laptop which has a proper working version and try to reinstall from
that? In that case if it is possible, then I would be spared from
reconfiguring NVDA all over again to suit my needs.
Thanks,
Akbar

Hi,

I tried to install NVDA17.3 on my HP laptop and although I could
download the new version without any difficulty and also after
clicking to install it when I got the message to do so the configuring
progress went on and on for at least 20 minutes and after that I got
an error message saying that the installation failed. I tried the
same thing three times with the same result. Could someone please
enlighten me as to what is happening and how I could remedy the same.

Incidentally I had no problem updating NVDA on my second laptop which
is an Asus. Both laptops are running Win 10 duly updated to the
latest version. On the second laptop the installation took only a few
minutes and there was no problem at all.

I give below the log I received for the installation failure. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.
