Re: Excel reading issues/Repository

No, everything’s good. It’s just I didn’t want to appear to be pushy or something.

Very exciting time for NVDA.

Btw, can you give me some sort of advice regarding extracting a repository that has not been made to an add-on to work with NVDA?

Oh, no problem.  It's not always easy to find similar existing issues if the creator used different wording or terminology.  I was just noting the "current" issue in the thread (and that this is an issue for Excel 2010 users, it doesn't seem to affect 2016 at least), I wasn't telling you off or anything *smile*.

I see the issue you created on GitHub has been closed as it was a duplicate of another issue: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/2946  That original issue is still open.  It does work in Excel 2016.

There have been a couple of issues caused by the way Excel does editing cells - another one is reading formatting (and particularly formatting where an entire cell is not formatted uniformly).

Hi again,

As I stated before, I’m using Windows 10 Creater’s Edition with Excel 2010, and NVDA version 2017.3.

I’ve already tried the below steps with all of the add-ons disabled and It still doesn’t read what I need it to read.

I go to any of my already created Excel spreadsheets, and locate a cell I want to work with like a27.

So I go there, press f2 to get to the editing of the cell.

It reads everything when I’m moving through the text with left and right arrow keys.

However, when I want to select a portion of that text either character by character shift+right arrow key or word by word ctrl+shift+right arrow key, NVDA doesn’t read anything I’m selecting.

Obviously, when you press ctrl+c to copy the text it’ll go to the clipboard no problem, but the fact that you don’t know what’s been selected and copied, really bugs me.

Maybe there is a solution which I could implement to make everything work as it should.

I’ve tried key echo, and it still behaves the same way.

On the other hand, when I’m using Google Sheets, pressing f2 and then selecting text with shift+right arrow makes everything read as it should.

Thanks for any help.

Dmitry

I don't know about on windows, but linux can still use the mbrola voices, you can use them with the festival speech synthesizer (and there's also the flite synth for linux too).  Surprising amount of choices on linux.  I used to have flite and festival hold conversations with each other, it was quite amusing, and actually got the attention of my wife when she wasn't paying attention and I wanted her help with something. *grin*.

Free voices.

Well you are restricted to the following.

1. the nvda extra voices page has festival, and pico and a few other
things.

2. the speachhub project I think its speachhup.org but I forget thats
got a few.

Thirdly the ms voices, sapi4 are free they are round ms site.

4. While not exactly free if you email enablerehab@... and get
the dectalk sapi voices and just pay a couple bucks or whatever you can
spare you will get some voices the volumes are not that great but well.

Ofcause the other way I'd go is if you can get some cash, watch out for
voice pack sales, I got the inoetics voices for a sale early on.

The voices at atguys.com are in packs to.

There is flite if you can find it, its worse than espeak but its about.

I have this problem constantly. It is so bad now that I cannot use any
folder other than the one that is open.

For another problem, my computer was recently reset (office 365 and NVDA
were both among the programs reinstalled. This reset has allowed my
computer to finally get creators update (1703)). The problem with Outlook
is at it's worst.

Hi everyone,

I am running Outlook 2016 on Windows 10 with the latest update of NVDA.

Over the past month, I have found that outlook stops and runs out of time
almost every time (four times a day) that I check my emails. I notice the
problem particularly when I try to swap between folders. This generates the
message that Outlook has stopped working and will close. Today, I
downloaded the newest update of NVDA and yet the problem is still persisting.

I unloaded NVDA and brought up JAWS. With JAWS running I am able to swap
between folders without any delay so I am convinced that NDA is causing the
problem.

Before loading JAWS, I had a very full outlook .pst file and reduced that
from 1.2g to 200mb. I have no addins so that can't be the cause.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Is there a known solution?

I would really value a response as I much prefer to use NVDA rather than JAWS!

All the best,

thunderbird works a treat.  It's a bit slow at times (especially if you have thousands and thousands of messages), but otherwise, it works just fine with NVDA, and I've been using it for just about a year now without any major problems.

Re: Github

Quentin Christensen

As mentioned, if you want to create a ticket, submit an issue or generally report something that isn't working / could work better / should be implemented etc, what you want to do is create a new issue.  The link to the issues section is https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues

Unless you are writing code yourself, you can mostly ignore the other sections (code, pull requests, projects, etc).

Ideally, it's worth jumping to the SECOND edit box on that page to search for the issue you want to report.  (the first one searches code and other things, you want to search issues).  So, if someone reported a problem with footnotes in Word 2016 for instance, I'd search for "word 2016 footnotes" or similar in that second edit box.  There are two types of issues, open and closed. Open issues are either new issues that haven't been triaged yet (that is, no one has looked at them to see how serious they are, whether the issue has already been reported etc), or issues which are being worked on, or waiting to be worked on.  Closed issues are issues which have either been fixed, or which are duplicates of other issues, or sometimes things which can't or won't be fixed.  If the problem with footnotes is that you want them to appear at the top of the page for instance, then that isn't something related to NVDA.  That's a feature request for Word itself and you'd need to submit that to Microsoft.

To create a new issue, there is a "new issue" button, you can jump straight there with https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/new

When you create a new issue, there is a block of text in the "comment" prompting you for the kinds of information that are useful in diagnosing the issue.  Please try and include: steps to reproduce the issue, attach any files which might help (eg if Word crashes every time you try and check formatting in this particular file, if you can share it, that would help), what should happen and what actually happens, and your system configuration (Windows version, application version, NVDA version and whether installed or portable), and anything you've done to try and resolve or get more information (eg tried different version of NVDA or other program).  Don't stress if you don't have every piece of that information or if you aren't sure if the issue has been filed before.  When someone goes to triage the issue, they will ask for more information if needed.  If the issue has been filed previously, they will link to it (and likely close the duplicate issue you created).

If you do have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

Kind regards

Quentin.

I just looked at the Github NVDA part of the site.  I haven't signed up yet but it looks easy to do so and to create a pull request, which I assume is what is generally referred to on this list as a ticket.  But many people may find the page confusing. Is there a way that some sort of short help information can be inserted after the navigation links on the page, instructing people what to do to create what are called tickets, perhaps also how to search for tickets and how to create an account?  If tickets are desired from the widest variety of users, this process should be somehow explained and done so in a place that those wishing to create tickets will be likely to see the explanation.

Hi Don

after changing the text to speech settings to a at least 80 percent as in the previous email after that i could ajust it in nvda but no faster than what i had set before hand.

This machine is a slow one but no lag even on the desktop at the faster rate.

if i went any quicker in the rate that i set before hand i probably would have to slow it down in nvda and plus if i also went into narrator he would be to quick.

I can increase the rate within ghe NVDA voice setings.  I guess the lag I am talking about is when you are at the desktop and use single letter navagation there is a lag before you get the voicing of the icon you are moving to.  For example at the desktop I hit the letter n and it moves me to the NVDA icon but the David one core voice takes longer to say NVDA versus how long it takes Access32 to say NVDA.

Hi don

At present you can not ajust the speed through the settings in nvda to speed up the windows one core voices. from what i have read there is a update from windows which will fix this if i read it correct.

there is a work around for the moment which works.

In windows 10 in the search box i typed text to speech and then it came up with some results.

it cam up with the following result Change text-to-speech settings, System settings of which i pressed the enter key on.

When the next screen came up it defaults to my one core voice i chose. Tab to the rate and change it there just use the arrow keys to do this.

Then close it the screen i mean.

You will notice now in nvda he will be speaking quicker.

Honestly can't tell you since, like said, have generally got language switching turned off, partly since lots of sites, and other forms of content have the wrong language set for various bits of content, and, if I want to switch between some languages myself quickly, then I just use the switch synth add-on to change to a different voice profile, etc.

It's language encoding switching - I have actually disabled automatic language switching off under NVDA's voice settings, but, if I turn it on again, then while my default language is set to use espeak english, it seems to switch to english-us at times on that page.

Re: lag when writing messages in thunderbird

I have also had big lags only in TB composition but with both NVDA and Window-Eyes.

I am running Windows 7 pro on an i7 2.7GHrz processor with 16 GB of RAM. I don't think the lag should be from a slow machine especially since it doesn't impact programs like word or excel which can lag with lack of processing power.

I have the service pack 1 for win 7 and haven't looked into other service packs. Might that help?

Thoughts?

Hi,   I don't know if this will fix it or not,   but I remember Jamey posted something because tb was crashing but this was some years ago this is his work and not mine. text below.

General sluggishness with Thunderbird.  I have a feeling, though,
that this is a Thunderbird issue and nothing to do with NVDA.
Try disabling Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Enable Global Search and
Indexer. Note that this isn't accessibility or screen reader specific,
but I personally found that global search didn't help me and was a
performance killer.
