You don't have to change default browsers.  Just copy and paste the link into the address field of whatever browser you want to use.

Hi all!

I just downloaded the latest version of the Weather add on with IE 11.

I just set IE as my default browser for this one time, and entered on the link. It downloaded just like it should.

Just wanted you all to know that IE will download it.

Thanks a lot, Adriano

Re: New NVDA sounds

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Well it seems many did not. I think a lot of it was the higher pitched sounds were not heard by those with hearing loss. Since the code is not in nvda for allowing these to be changed it was felt, I think that they would leave it till people could use this function. However if you want to manually change them it is easy. If you kept the old snap or its archive, you can run it, let it extract as a portable version to a folder, then go there, grab the waves folder and copy it to the one in the installed copy. do this while not running it though. Then restart the installed copy and they will be in there till you do an update at which point you need to copy them again. What I have done is renamed the waves to waves2 and then just copied waves to that folder. This should make it easier next time to change them.
If you do not have a snap them let us know on here, I'm sure somebody has a copy somewhere.

You're not listening.

The person asked for a tool that was both accessible, and included with windows. I suggested paragon's disk manager or partition program because I don't know of any programs that fit the original posters requirements, and apparently you don't either, since you keep pushing partition magic which definitely does not come with windows, and is definitely not a free utility, and also is not accessible with NVDA or any other screen reader for that matter, so you fail on all counts.

Partition magic is *not* (I repeat) partition magic is *not* a windows tool. Therefore, your statements are erroneous. Microsoft does not include partition magic with windows, so that makes it neither free, nor is it part of windows (which is what the original poster was asking for.

That is clearly not true, as a friend of mine has done this, but he is sighted. I'll need to ask him the trick.
I think it can have issues if there is already a hidden partition for recovery use as is often the case these days. Brian

If there's a way to resize partitions with built in windows tools, I
sure never learned about it. The only way to make one partition two
partitions is to delete the existing partition, and create two of them,
which wipes out everything on the drive, and leaves you with two freshly
formatted partitions both of which will be completely blank. This is
fine if you don't care about the contents of your hard disk, but if
you're trying to simply split a single partition into two partitions,
then there aren't any ways to do this with just default windows utilities.

Unless you have a program that can resize partitions, you're not going
to be able to change your partitions without loosing
everything.Paragon has a couple programs that can do this, check out
http://paragon-software.com and take a look at their partition manager
or their hard disk manager depending on how much you want to do. Both
programs aren't 100 percent accessible, but they're close enough to
get the job done. If you're willing to help out, let me know, and
can give you my affiliate links, but if you just want to purchase the
programs, that's ok too.

Clearly they do not, or this concept would not have gone the way of the dinosaur.

The only e-mail client I know of that ever used identities is Outlook Express. Outlook Express has been dead for a long time. If identities had been considered a "must have" feature every e-mail client that has come since would have created them. What became a "hot item," which I dislike, is the universal inbox that takes all the inboxes of all the accounts you have in an e-mail client and integrates all the messages in all of them arranged, whether threaded or unthreaded, with the sort order you want. That's my idea of a nightmare because my e-mail accounts are used for separate purposes and the last thing I want is to be looking at all of them at once. I am, however, clearly in the minority since the universal inbox is a very popular and almost ubiquitous feature these days.

I have never understood the attraction of identities, myself. It is easy enough to jump from account to account in a tree structure and those accounts are entirely separate entities. I believe that this is the reason that identities really never took off.

I don't know if you have a pair of eyes but it might be interesting to look at task manager and see if the running process is showing.
Maybe its not just nvda, maybe the window for this is somehow being disable by a windows problem.

Hi all,

I have a really interesting problem that I haven’t been able to solve.
I’ve never had a problem installing NVDA before including the laptop that I’m having problems with. I have downloaded it a couple times to make sure the file wasn’t a problem and have used it to install onto another laptop and it worked fine.

I am using as a backup laptop my very inexpensive Toshiba laptop. 64 bit, With 8Gb Ram. It works fine with the portable version of NVDA.
It’s running the latest Windows 10 creators edition. When I try to install NVDA I get the music that you expect, I then get the rising tones, and then a few seconds later I get the system sound that you would normally need to answer yes or no to, to allow a program to make changes or install. However that doesn’t appear and it is not in the system tray. There is nothing in the task manager or process areas as well.

Any great thoughts would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim.

Hi,

I'm having an interesting issue with NVDA 2017.3.

When on my desktop, if I don't move, NVDA constantly repeats the name of the
icon that currently has focus.

Is this normal?

Can anyone tell me how to fix it?

Thanks,

Jessica

It did not work in firefox either, I think short fragments of the log in the body are OK its other files that you really need to attach in case they get corrupted.

I am being asked to attach the actual text file to a new issue rather than simply pasting in the contents of the log file, for instance . As mentioned, if you want to create a ticket, submit an issue or generally report something that isn't working / could work better / should be implemented etc, what you want to do is create a new issue. The link to the issues section is https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues <https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues>

Unless you are writing code yourself, you can mostly ignore the other sections (code, pull requests, projects, etc).

Ideally, it's worth jumping to the SECOND edit box on that page to search for the issue you want to report. (the first one searches code and other things, you want to search issues). So, if someone reported a problem with footnotes in Word 2016 for instance, I'd search for "word 2016 footnotes" or similar in that second edit box. There are two types of issues, open and closed. Open issues are either new issues that haven't been triaged yet (that is, no one has looked at them to see how serious they are, whether the issue has already been reported etc), or issues which are being worked on, or waiting to be worked on. Closed issues are issues which have either been fixed, or which are duplicates of other issues, or sometimes things which can't or won't be fixed. If the problem with footnotes is that you want them to appear at the top of the page for instance, then that isn't something related to NVDA. That's a feature request for Word itself and you'd need to submit that to Microsoft.

To create a new issue, there is a "new issue" button, you can jump straight there with https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/new <https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/new>

When you create a new issue, there is a block of text in the "comment" prompting you for the kinds of information that are useful in diagnosing the issue. Please try and include: steps to reproduce the issue, attach any files which might help (eg if Word crashes every time you try and check formatting in this particular file, if you can share it, that would help), what should happen and what actually happens, and your system configuration (Windows version, application version, NVDA version and whether installed or portable), and anything you've done to try and resolve or get more information (eg tried different version of NVDA or other program). Don't stress if you don't have every piece of that information or if you aren't sure if the issue has been filed before. When someone goes to triage the issue, they will ask for more information if needed. If the issue has been filed previously, they will link to it (and likely close the duplicate issue you created).

If you do have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Is there a way that some sort of short help information can be inserted after the navigation links on the page, instructing people what to do to create what are called tickets, perhaps also how to search for tickets and how to create an account? If tickets are desired from the widest variety of users, this process should be somehow explained and done so in a place that those wishing to create tickets will be likely to see the explanation.

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

It does not matter even if you move it to 0, it still annoys you from time to time, hence my comment about the illogical nature of not allowing the message text to be read from a non installed program. After all we are not changing it or hacking the system we just need to know what is going on.

For windows 7 I know there is a registry hack, but never tried it in win 10, besides, you can find the control with a search of control panel.

Hi,

I'm having an interesting issue with NVDA 2017.3.

When on my desktop, if I don't move, NVDA constantly repeats the name
of the
icon that currently has focus.

Is this normal?

Can anyone tell me how to fix it?

Thanks,

In Thunderbird I used to have all my mail go the local folder area. All my mail is in seperate folders now. My personal email with Spectrum and my Gmail which has all my list mail.

I just selected the inbox for another account, because it was the easiest way for me to check to see if multiple folders could be opened simultaneously.

Well, again, I'm not sure why just navigating to them is a problem, but for what it's worth, you can have multiple folders open, I just opened a second account, and I can now control-tab between my two folder lists, two messages that are open, and this email (currently being written).  I don't think thunderbird cares how many folders you open, but as I said, each one you open uses additional memory and cpu, but if it works for you, have at it.

What's the reason for having multiple folders open at the same time? Thunderbird tells you when you get new mail, and which account it was for, at that point, you can easily go back to the folder list, and select the one you want to read, open it, then go to the message list and there you are.  I have 3 accounts in my current thunderbird, and I never need more than one folder at a time open.  When I want to read mail from the other folders, it's a simple matter to navigate to it and open it in the folder list.  I'm not sure what benefit you would derive from having them open all the time (other than eating memory and cpu cycles).

I can confirm you can do this.  If you right click on a given folder (hit the menu/apps key or Shift+F10) one of the options is to open in a new tab (or new window).  You can have as many tabs (or windows) as you wish open and each of these tabs (windows) can contain a single folder from any of the accounts you have set up.

This is actually how I work. I have four email accounts and in Outlook 2016 each account is in it's own tree. The really great thing is that while they do not mix, if something was sent to my private account but it really should have been to a different address, I don't have to forward it but I can move to a folder in the other account easily.

I am only wanting to leave Outlook because the problems are making it to difficult to use.

I believe that this is the reason that identities really never took off.

hello.
did you try nvda without eloquence?
by default, it only has espeak and i dont think that the problem
relates to eloquence.

also, system requirements for nvda 17.2 and 17.3 are the same.

Besides, when the updated version of NVDA finishes downloading it
automatically says that the download is complete and it will now
update the existing version of NVDA. with the negative result already
explained So I think I will just go ahead and make a portable version
from my proper working NVDA from my second laptop and install it from

down to doing it over the weekend.

Via Voice isn't Eloquence. it is similar in sound and performance, but
it
isn't the same program and isn't owned by the same entity.

hi.
this may be caused by an old version of elequence.
before you update switch to espeak then upgrade and then switch back.
also do a restart of your laptop.
i dont mean shutdown and restart.
i mean a full restart.

Hmmm did you try to alt tab a few times.

Sometimes I get a uac prompt, usually it pops up but if I for example
have more than a couple windows open then it may be hidden.

The trick is to know how long something should take to download and
if
you heard the completed sound or think it should be well should be,
then
you need to alt tab.

On the other hand, the other way you can handle this is download the
main exe file, close everything window wise and run that.

getting a message saying "please wait-your existing copy of NVDA is
being updated" and this goes on repeating with simultaneous beeps
indefinitely untill finally it says that the update installation
failed. How do I get over this problem? Should I remove the
existing
copy of NVDA and install a fresh copy from scratch?

Alternatively, is it possible to make a portable copy from my other
laptop which has a proper working version and try to reinstall from
that? In that case if it is possible, then I would be spared from
reconfiguring NVDA all over again to suit my needs.
