Re: usenet?
Travis Siegel <tsiegel@...>
Usenet has groups (just like some web sites) where illegal stuff shows up, but it's more useful for it's thousands of groups covering every topic imaginable, where you can get information and talk about just about anything. I used to use it a lot in the early 90s when I was in college for talking about favorite artists, and to enjoy cyberpunk stories generally written by the participants of the group, it was pretty cool. Fan fiction sites fill that gap these days, but it was cool to have the message scome to you, which is what I liked the most about usenet.

They have programming groups too, you can learn just about any language, ask questions, get help with source code, and more. Of course, overflow.com and other sites cover that these days too, but it was a nice place to talk about topics that must folks didn't cara about (such as mudding alt.muds), and plenty more. I used to use it all the time. Never used it for finding pay content, but a lot of folks did, and probably still do. I like it more for the access to information and stories myself.

Re: using facebook
Travis Siegel <tsiegel@...>
Usenet is the www before the www existed. Well, it was more of a cross between groups.io and the www. You could literally find anything on usenet, but it's more or less a large (and I mena large) collection of discussion groups to which anyone can participate in and contribute to. Unfortunately, these days, most isps don't provide usenet access, so you're kind of out of luck when it comes to accessing these groups. As far as I know, there are still a few providers that will privide access for a fee, which is truly a shame, because it used to be provided with each and every internet access account, and it was a great resource, of course, it was also a huge spam trap, and still is, but it's still loaded with useful information.

Adelphia/Time Warner/Spectrum blocked Usenet binary materials a decade
or so ago. I used to use X-News for Usenet Binaries until then. It had a very accessible Windows Explorer type interface. It might be worth people doing a search for that program if they have providers that still offer Usenet binaries. Actually believe it or not the Qube is still supported. Don't
know the URL and don't care cause I myself use TW Blue and have
since it came out 4 years ago now. I've seen people on Twitter
this week use the Qube.

My internet provider AT&T used to provide the Usenet service for free. They discontinued this many years ago. When AT&T stopped carrying the usenet service, I found that I had to find a service for easy access to sci.space.news and sci.space.science. Also reading usenet on the iPhone is far mor easier than reading usenet articles on the PC.

Usenet can be still useful. I subscribe to sci.space.science and sci.space.news. I subscribe to this service http://www.forteinc.com/apn/index.php for $2.95 a month. I read the articles on my iPhone using the newstap application. I don't download any Forte software. I found the Forte PC offerings inaccessible. I have not looked at the PC softwre in many years.

Re: Some accessible free radio streamer
Gene
I downloaded the newest version from the web
site. I downloaded the version for 32 and 64bit machines, though that
shouldn't matter. I installed it as a portable program. It isn't
clear to me what is and is not free. I got no message about a trial
period, and the station list is there. But I see nothing for looking for a
new station list. I didn't install the version because I already have an
earlier installed version. If that would have made a difference, I don't
know. I'ts beginning to look as though the software works even though the
message during installation says it is no longer free. It may be that
getting updated station lists is what you are paying for.
But my point is that those who want to use the
program for free may still be able to do so if they are willing to do without
updated station lists.

credit. He isn't making the program free by foisting all sorts of malware

good free aggregator programs.
