Re: kindle and nvda

hello.

10.8. Kindle for PC
NVDA supports reading and navigating books in Amazon Kindle for PC.
This functionality is only available in Kindle books designated with
"Screen Reader: Supported" which you can check on the details page for
the book.
Browse mode is used to read books. It is enabled automatically when
you open a book or focus the book area. The page will be turned
automatically as appropriate when you move the cursor or use the say
all command. You can manually turn to the next page with the pageDown
key and turn to the previous page with the pageUp key.
Single letter navigation is supported for links and graphics, but only
within the current page. Navigating by link also includes footnotes.
10.8.1. Text Selection
Kindle allows you to perform various functions on selected text,
including obtaining a dictionary definition, adding notes and
highlights, copying the text to the clipboard and searching the web.
To do this, first select text as you normally would in browse mode;
e.g. by using shift and the cursor keys. Once you have selected text,
press the applications key or shift+f10 to show the available options
for working with the selection. If you do this with no text selected,
options will be shown for the word at the cursor.
10.8.2. User Notes
You can add a note regarding a word or passage of text. To do this,
first select the relevant text and access the selection options as
described above. Then, choose Add Note.
When reading in browse mode, NVDA refers to these notes as comments.
To view, edit or delete a note:
1. Move the cursor to the text containing the note.
2. Access the options for the selection as described above.
3. Choose Edit Note.
hope that help, God bless you!

And if you are unlucky enough to have one of these laptops with DTS linked
to the realtek audio manager, and no way to disable the "enhancements", then
you're stuck going into task manager and finding the startup tab and
disabling the realtek audio from there. At least that's what I ended up
doing. Plus, to make things worse, Windows onboard sound often defaults to
48000 hz for playback and recording, and that results in pops and crackles
for most sounds, because they're expecting 44100 hz. Now to go looking for a
portable sound card that also connects to the phone. I don't know why
manufacturers think I want my music screwed with. If I want all this
compression and stuff I can find an FM radio easily enough.

Re: Accessing toolbars in Firefox.

That allows you to show or hide certain tool bars but those aren't the ones being discussed.  There are tool bars you can't get to with f6.  I haven't found any way to get to them except by using object navigation with review keys or by causing NVDA to read all the objects and stopping reading where I want to be.  that stops you in the object or around the object you want to work in if you stop it quickly when you hear where you want to be.  Then you use object navigation and screen review to work with or move to and work with the item.  Someone may know of a way to move to the tool bars but I don't.

I haven't noticed that, but I did have to fiddle with the audio
drivers quite a bit. It seems that the chipset in this laptop has some
idiotic codecs that get loaded and do weird stuff to the sound, so I
had to disable them. There were driver updates in the creator's update
though. Make sure your enhancements or stuff like that didn't get

Sometimes that happens.

Hi

I checked my settings and all were correct.

When i setup windows i turned off quite a few of the privacy settings.

I just figured out what had done as all of my computes are the same.

To make it work go into the windows settings with the windows key + letter I

Locate the privacy setting then press the enter key.

then i went to the following setting and pressed the enter key on it Speech, inking, & typing

Then i turned on the following Turn on speech services and typing suggestions

I also checked my mic etc in the other section but knew it was ok.

Now when you do the windows key + letter H you will hear the noise then speak then there will be a noise when you finish.

I tried it in notepad etc and it worked.

Just did the same and put nvda to no speech then turned it back on to see what was read.

hope it helps for others to get it up and running.

Hi

It may well be that the microphone is not defined as your default recording device.  Try the following:

1 Press the windows key to open the Cortana search box and type in ‘sound card’ (without the quotes.

2. From the list of suggestions press enter on ‘Change sound card settings, control panel’

3. In the dialog that opens, press Control+tab to move to the Recording tab

4. Press down arrow to microphone in the list control

5. Tab down to properties and press enter

6. Tab to ‘Device  Usage Use this device’ and ensure it is enabled.

7 Tab to OK and press enter, then tab to OK again on the previous dialog box

Cheers

Wow, Rosemarie!

If you press:

Windows+H, you hear a sound, and you can start dictating. When you stop, you hear a different sound, and you can read what you dictated.

I am dictating this email right now.

I am just talking out loud, after I pressed that command.

Well, let us see how well this dictation did!

This is a great feature of 1709!

I can’t wait until you get it!

Oh wow! I haven't gotten the new creator update yet but that's great that NVDA and narrator work so well with it.

Hi all!

I got the Fall Creators 1709 of win10 yesterday in my updates.

It downloaded and installed without a hitch. It took 90 minutes to download, but it took two hours to install. It got stuck at 70 percent for an hour, but I just waited patiently, and it finished.

Wow, I am using NVDA version

Version: master-14532,58e1946e

And it is so snappy in Edge, that I can’t believe it. NVDA is working better in this 1709, than it ever has. I just want everyone to know that NVDA is so snappy as well in file explorer. It is much snappier when I arrow through ffiles and folders in different areas of file explorer. The Mail app is working great with NVDA.

Narrator, is very snappy with MS Mark. I used Narrator in Edge, and it works well.

When you get 1709, you will love how well NVDA works with it.

i5 duel hp 7th gen this morning though the first one had 2 cu updates

after that but the desktop one worked as expected.

I did have adobe flash, java and google updates to contend with but

nothing else.

First, are those having problems using a USB microphone or a microphone you plug into a standard jack?  If the microphone is USB, I don't think the suggestion in the message below would apply because as I understand the way USB audio devices work, a USB microphone will be the default device when it is plugged in.  As far as using a microphone that uses a standard jack is concerned, I have no idea if making the microphone the ddefault recording device would cause the feature to work.

Cheers

Chris

Yes you have to have a microphone if one is not built in. They are more common in new laptops. Dont know of any PC's that have them built in.
