Re: NVDA and Edge

Hi. I'm new to the list and to windows 10, upgrading last week from 8.1. I'm glad to hear NVDA works in edge, my main screen reader system access, which works well for many things for me, doesn't so well in edge or is just loaded slowly , not sure which, but may play with it with NVDA some. I do like it so far from playing with it.
Original message:

Hi Craig!
It is interesting that the same happens with you. We should look into whether it might be something with NVDA.

Hi Pascal!
When NVDA goes silent for me in Edge, I press Alt+CTRL+N to restart NVDA. When it restarts, it works great again in Edge. It is the same command to start NVDA, but if NVDA goes silent, then that same command restarts NVDA. I have noticed a little more of that since 1709 fall creators.
Other than that, NVDA and edge work just as well together as JAWS used to work in IE 11. Edge is so fast, and it uses less of my memory!
Have a great one.

Hi,
I just tried to use Edge and here is how it went:
Launched Edge and surfed the Dradgereport.com page without problems; Then went to Breitbart page from which I launched Facebook to make a comment on an article. There, NVDA won't read as I am typing then the voice went silent and froze. I had to press Alt-F4 three times to exit Edge. Any suggestion/advice?
Thanks

Yes, I have had similar issues in the past with Superantispyware, where the issues ar, by comparison, quite minor as the revolve around getting screenreaders to get the correct focus in each case and in one case making a list accessible.
I gave up some time back.
Also of course the new Revo is a disaster.
In a perfect world programmers and programming tools should make sure the basics are there and hence its not going to be so big a job to do it later on.
I'd like to see Microsoft have some kind of internal check and will not allow a program to run if its not using the apis, but hat would be utopia!

When I contacted the devs of Sumatra pdf, they clearly stated that
they don't know anything about accessibility, and wouldn't be willing
to put any time and effort into it. Being an open source programme,
they said, if anyone wants to take up the task, let them do so. But
not they themselvles.

The situation is pretty much the same as with Calibre Viewer, or
Calibre in general.

When you open a file with Sumatra, the text is only shown as an image,
and is not extracted to let a screen rader access it.

I solve the problem now with Windows10 OCR, but that only shows one
screen at a time, of course.

It's a pity that devs are so narrow-minded, and unwilling to help (the
devs of Telegram are another shining example...).

I doubt it that NVDA can do anything about this issue with Sumatra and
Calibre though.

Ciao,

Ollie

sumatra is the best program, most simple, without complex

You said the folder is being shared with you. I don't know what you are referring to. If the folder is a Drop Box folder it can only be seen by those sharing it when using Drop Box. But you are saying you have to log into a different site. If so, the person hasn't shared it properly with you if you should be able to see it on Drop box or you are doing something incorrectly. I don't know what the problem is.

Well, I’ll have to check that out. Cause when I go get the Sunday night Oldies show every single Sunday. I have to sign into the site just to have the show downloaded to my drop box or my downloads. I can give that site to this list. You can see for yourselves if that’s okay.

You can, according to this article, share your folders using Drop Box directly. I don't know if there are accessibility problems in sharing folders but this article gives directions for sharing them for various apps and operating systems.

Well on my dropbox I have a set of shared folders that is used to update a web site by the host compnay. They shared the folder with me and hence all the folders within it. When I upload all I need to do is put the content into the folders shared and it just happens. Same happens from the other way around on a different account I use.
Obviously when you first set this haring up there was two ways to do it, one via a google account if you had one and one by your already existing account, they seem to be able to be tied together. I used my normal one, the one you get asked for with that quaint little g for giraffe prompt!

The message says that he was asked to share a folder, not that someone else is sharing a folder with him.  The procedure on the page should cover how this is done.  I looked at the Windows program and I see in general how to do so.  But it may have to be tried to make sure whether you understand just how to do it as there are odd quirks in the dialog.

Re: NVDA and Using The Edge Browser

David Moore

Hi Ron!

To open the Settings and more menu in Edge,

Press:

Alt+X

Arrow up once to settings, and press enter.

You can customize your home page, starting pages, and all of your settings just like in the other browsers.

You just tab through all of the settings. It is much easier to just tab through all of the settings than in Firefox, or even Chrome.

After you tab so many times, you get to advanced settings. Just press enter there, and you can adjust many more settings. Press the back button to get to the settings page where you were. You can just press escape to get out of settings.

When you press Alt+X,

You get a long vertical menu where settings is just one entry in that menu. You can also choose from open page in IE, Open in a private window, and much more from that menu!

There are many key commands that are similar just like you said!

Hope that helps you with customizing Edge just like other browsers.

Hi.

I have that same problem constantly with NVDA and Edge. I sometimes wait a minute and it then continues without having to restart NVDA.

NVDA and Using The Edge Browser

Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

I normally use Firefox for my default browser.  Because of the discussion about Edge, I tried it and it seems to have some promise.  Someone just sent a bunch of shortcut keys on this list and many are the same as in Firefox.  I do have a few questions.

The biggest question is: are there any menus where in you can customize Edge such as there are in Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer?  I did see the one shortcut alt + S that is supposed to open the settings window.  I tried this and nothing happened.  Is there some setting that I must change to get menus to work?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Somewhat off topic, but what's going on with dropbox?

Well, I’ll have to check that out.  Cause when I go get the Sunday night Oldies show every single Sunday. I have to sign into the site just to have the show downloaded to my drop box or my downloads. I can give that site to this list. You can see for yourselves if that’s okay.

I don't know what you are referring to in terms of using Google to see all your folders or share them.  You can see all your folders by signing into the Drop Box site.  You can, according to this article, share your folders using Drop Box directly.  I don't know if there are accessibility problems in sharing folders but this article gives directions for sharing them for various apps and operating systems.

If you have google account you can sign in using gmail. Then you can see all your folders. Seen this just this past summer. There's no escaping it. I tried to get around it and the same thing happened to me. I have to download an oldies show that I get for my friends and that was when I seen this with the drop box site.  You can download the show directly to your drop box or your downloads folder.  I think it's the same way when you have to share a folder.

I was just asked by someone to share a dropbox folder.  I've done this in the past with many folks with no problems at all.  This time, it was not possible with nvda.  It asked me to sign using Google and I don't understand this at all as I was already signed in when my computer starts and connects to the internet.  So I just ignored that thing and then I was directed to a nearly blank page with only one option--that was to upgrade to a paid account. I declined of course and then was sent back to the previous page. I then found another next button, and then was once again sent to that page insisting I must sign up for a paid account before proceeding.  I know this is some kind of malicious hijacking but I couldn't find any way around it.  Does anyone know what this is and how to kill it?  I really don't think there's any connection with dropbox and Google, and even if there is, there's no need to sign up for a paid account just to add a shared folder.

Hope someone can help.

No, it's the truth. Each time I get this oldies show I have to sign into the site with my e-mail address. Then I get the oldies downloaded to my drop box. Then I just give it to the friends. It's the DJ Steve Summers who uploads the show. He uses drop box. He used to use sendspace. But now he uses drop box. It's the God's honest truth. Sorry, have to break it to you.

You're sure it's not one of these? I'd get in touch with your friend and make sure they're really sharing a folder with you first.

Hi all!

Edge is almost my daily browser.

With NVDA, it is very snappy for me, and I can navigate complex web pages, just like with Chrome.

I can play videos, use sites like espn.com, stream TV in Edge, and on and on!

Edge is my browser 80 percent of the time with NVDA.

JAWS is another story, but the latest NVDA and Windows 10 1709, fall Creators work very well with Edge.

I would give Edge with NVDA a B + at least!
