Avg anti-virus and nvda

Mary Otten <motten53@...>

Hi all,
I had a consultation with a local custom PC builder. We were talking about the various software that I would like to use, and I mentioned windows defender as the virus program. He said they generally recommend and install AVG. A long long time ago, I use that program, and missed a virus. And subsequently I heard it had become inaccessible. What is the status of this program with respect to Accessibility with NVDA? Have any of you have experience is good or bad with it?

Hello. I don't think it's worth installing Mozila 57 until she's fully available to NVDA.

Yes I saw a message on the issues list from James, about some fixing for

version 58, so maybe it will get resolved from the currently unusable state.

Its new users of any screenreader I feel sorry for, especially where its a

shared machine and the sighted member just lets firefox update.

There are a couple of other issues. It disabled both my add ons,

navigational sounds and Ublock Origin ad blocker and even when I put the

version 52 back on I had to re download both add ons and install them again.

Not only that but nvda after the update could not read the screen of the add

ons manager, I had to exit  firefox completely and go back in again to see

if they had installed correctly, I'm sure this was not the case prior to up

and down dating the version I had, which was 55. How also does one set 52 to

get security updates without letting it update to 57 as I see it wants to do

till I set updates to no, ie not recommended.

That isn't what I described.  What I said is that if you manually turn forms mode on, it will stay on.  You are discussing behavior in browse mode.  If you turn browse mode on, then the behavior you describe will occur unless you set NVDA not to change to forms mode automatically.  It doesn't matter if you turn browse mode on manually or if it is on because it is on when you start browsing, the behavior doesn't change.  Controling this behavior is available in the Browse Mode settings.  I believe the check box you uncheck is Automatic focus mode for focus changes. There is another check box, Automatic focus mode for caret movement, which I also have unchecked.  I don't remember what it does but others will probably explain it.

I thought the whole point of the ESR version was that   it would not update to 57 until about June next year, when hopefully the accessibility issues will have improved. According to the FS Blog on this they say that people using ESR will however continue to get the latest security updates  installed into Firefox ESR but  will not be vulnerable to the main upgrade to 57 until next year.

I have the same issue on the other machine, and that is the reason why I keep to shift instead to use the Firefox ESR version 52 but for now I will stick to this version because there is likely more stable in performance and never has a problem. And, once the issue has fix maybe I could go for to use and test it again.

Re: NVDA not speaking message details in Outlook 2016

Ian Robinson <ian228@...>

Hi,

I had the same issue of NVDA not reading the info for older messages when I first setup Outlook 2016.  It happened more in some folders than others, with the Sent items folder being one of the worst.  The status bar clearly showed all the expected messages existed, but beyond a certain point, NVDA just wouldn’t read anything.

Eventually, I realised that there is a setting in Outlook that limits how many emails are synchronised when using MAPI or Exchange accounts.  I set the account to synchronise all messages and gave Outlook time to download the older messages.  Since then, NVDA reads everything as expected.

Not sure if it will help, but worth a try.

To make sure all messages are synchronised locally,:

  1. Go to the File menu and choose Info.
  2. Tab to Account Settings and press Space.
  3. From the menu, choose Account Settings.
  4. Tab to the “Change” button and press space.
  5. Press tab until you hear “Mail to keep off line”.
  6. Alter the slider to 100% and press the Ok button.  You will probably get a message about restarting Outlook.

Apologies if the above doesn’t help, but it worked for me.  <smile>

Best wishes.

Ian

Hello all,

I am running Outlook 2016 (latest update) under Windows 10 (latest update) with NVDA 2017.3

Before I raise an issue in GitHub, I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this problem.

I have 464 messages in my Sent Items folder. When I open the folder I should hear the selected fields that describe each message  as I press up-arrow and down-arrow. In fact, I hear the first message details when I first open the folder list. When I press down-arrow I hear nothing! The arrow has in fact moved to the next message in the list but NVDA does not speak. I press down-arrow again, the   cursor has moved to the next message but NVDA says nothing. I keep this up for the first 265 messages. At message 266, NVDA bursts into life and speaks all the fields! If I press up-arrow once NVDA speaks the previous message but is silent again from there to the first message.

I experimented with the list and concluded that NVDA will only speak the details of the last 200 messages in the list. To do this, I shortened the list a few times and this pattern continued. NVDA only started reacting to the arrow   keys for the final 200 messages in the list.  When I took away the last 265 messages from the  list, NVDA spoke the full list of messages as there were now only 200 messages in the list. When I brought back the original messages and built the list back up to its original 464 items, NVDA was silent again from the first message until I reached the 266th message.

I have been experiencing this problem randomly in Outlook 2016 for over a year now. It does not happen with JAWS 2016 or with Narrator so I am happy that it is not a video problem and that it is really an exclusive NVDA problem.

I will report an issue to the NVDA team. However, they cannot take it on as a development task if I am the only user who experiences it. For that reason, I would ask anyone who has seen the same problem could reply to the list and I will then be able to make a firmer case for the issue.

All the best,

Hi all, I am using Balabolka for reading EPUB and PDF files, and it works perfectly for me.

Dne 2.11.2017 v 16:48 Giles Turnbull napsal(a):

I had not heard of QRead before so went to their website to check it out. I downloaded the demo version and within 5 mins had returned to the website to purchase the full version! I think it's fantastic! I use a HIMS Blaze ET book reader and one thing that does annoy me is that Bookshare books cannot be navigated word by word or character by character which, if you want to know how a word is spelled is troublesome. When I read a html webpage, such as a newspaper, there is the word and character navigation, but apparently not in Daisy format books.

The QRead program will open Daisy books from Bookshare right from the zipped download, and I can navigate by word or character as I desire. Although Bookshare books can be read online, having to press the next page button at the end of a page gets a little tiring in a few hundred page book!

I tried QRead out on a PDF file too and can confirm it does open the PDF very quickly and is far simpler to navigate than using Acrobat DC. With PDF files I always either save them as text from Acrobat, or OCR them using Abbyy Finereader because I find that the best way to turn a PDF into a plain text file.

I'll be using QRead as my first port of call for PDFs and Daisy reading, and several other formats it handles :)

I am sorry to hear that you had the same trouble but I am also relieved that here is another example of it. Like you, I have been mystified because the issue appeared and disappeared from various folders. Since I upgraded to Windows 10 it has remained permanently on the Sent Items folder.  I must try the convsations setting that you used. For my own paart, I found that turning on the Showing in groups feature overcame it.

Anyway, it is great to  have your information.

Hi, Brian

I have the same issue on the other machine, and that is the reason why I keep to shift instead to use the Firefox ESR version 52 but for now I will stick to this version because there is likely more stable in performance and never has a problem. And, once the issue has fix maybe I could go for to use and test it again.

Now there may well be some kind of setting that can be altered, I do not know, to achieve what he got, slow but functioning. I could not find any option for this. Not only that but it seemed to lose almost half of my bookmarks as well.

So unless they fix this on the release version anyone trying to use Firefox 57 when it comes out with the latest version of nvda, and I am up to date with the master branch here, will not be able to do so unless they know how to make it work.
If these people are employees then they will probably need the permission of an admin to reinstall a version like 55, and turn off auto updates. I have reinstalled 52 in actual fact and got my bookmarks back as well as functionality. To my mind the makers of Firefox at the current state of play should be able to see if screenreading software is on a machine in a similar way to Adobe reader or Jarte does, and prevent it from updating to an unworkable version.
I cannot understand why they have not done this.

Anyone care to comment?

Hi,

Removed the addon and reinstalled from the link provided in your
message. Still it installed the version of 25th Oct and not the
version of 31st Oct. So I still get the message to install the latest
version. Why am I getting the outdated version when downloading from
the link you have provided?

Hi,

I downloaded the update file and installed it. All went well and it
even asked me if I wanted to update the addon existing and I answered
yes. Still after the restart of \NVDA it still tells me that a update
of Weather Plus is available. I tried reinstalling it at least four
times but still the same result. What is going wrong and how do I
remedy it?

Thanks and regards,

hello.
potplayer in previous versions did not play mp4 or aac files without

we should install external codecs before installation or be connected

is it correct now?
