Good morning everyone.



I have a client who has just lost most of her vision. She worked as an
accountant and used a program called quick books. In my experience we have
had terrible success with screen readers and accounting software in the
past. Does anyone know if this has changed. Can NVDA be made to work with
quick books? If not, is there any accounting software that will work with
NVdA, or any other screen reader? Thanks for any help you can give.

I just upgraded to beta 14 of Firefox 57 to get a first-hand impression of
the slowness, or performance issue, that seems to be plaguing early
adopters. While I agree that it seems to be slower where page loading and
general responsiveness are concerned, I also find that stability and
reliability are great, including complex web pages. It takes some getting
used to but isn't altogether an unpleasant experience as it is quite
deterministic.

Thank you for making that clarification. Now I am curious whether there are features in that other program that you recommended that you think make it a good adjunct to file explorer, things you can’t do at all with FileExplorer, or can  do more efficiently with that other program.

Recently I stated that NVDA was sluggish for me with File Explorer on large drives. However I noticed when going through File Explorer settings for something else that somehow the Preview Pane option had been turned on. I don’t know how this happened as I normally always turn it off. Anyway since making this change NVDA has sped up to a perfectly acceptable level on File Explorer so I thought I should make this clarification.

First I would like to thank you for the kind and gentle manner you answer questions on this list.  Second, (issue previously reported) each time I update the Win10 App Essentials, my synthesizer defaults to the MSFT Sound Mapper and I am left without speech.  It is annoying but fixable.  However, I am helping a newly blind person and It is happening on her computer and the experience is more frustrating.  It usually happens after a reboot.  I would appreciate someone looks into the issue.

I'm also interested to know if anyone has had any luck with this. The
cursory look I took has shown a very unusable interface, but if there are
tricks to making it work, I'd love to do so as there's a class I'm
attending weekly that uses Discord as one of its distribution methods.

It's possible too that your active window was hidden behind another
window. Since you had word open with a blank document, it's likely they
were seeing that window, and the notepad window you had open working was
hidden behind one or more other windows. This happens to me all the time
when I ask for sighted help, the first thing the sighted help needs to
do is move all the windows around until they find the window I'm working
in. It's likely you experienced something similar.

time and go to each of them using Alt + Tab. When I back to
WordPad, nothing appear on my screen, but everything works well

It could be you have some windows (like WordPad maybe?) set quite small.
NVDA can still work with it, but visually your sighted colleague might only
be able to see the ribbon etc. If you press WINDOWS+UP ARROW it should
maximise the current window to take up the full screen.

If you often work with a sighted colleague and would like them to be able
to better tell where NVDA is working with the focus, you could install the
"Focus highlight" add-on which draws a coloured box around the object which
currently has focus. It doesn't change how NVDA works but can make it
easier for sighted users sitting next to you.

And, sure, there are answers to your questions:


1) - try combinations ALT+SHIFT+A, then H, then N - it works. It calls command separratelly by menu levels (Accessibility menu, then Headings, then Next).


2) Try ALT+ENTER - it works for me. But as I say before, try to use headings list by ALT+SHIFT+T, then O. This displays tree with navigation, you can move by arrows up and down and ENTER to jump to heading in document.

Hi Tony,

Do you have sluggishness using NVDA with the default eSpeak NG voice? NVDA
should be able to use most SAPI 5 voices. Microsoft Anna is a voice that
Microsoft included with Windows 7 and should definitely work. If you have
commercial software installed which comes with other SAPI 5 voices, it's
possible NVDA may see those but the voice might give an error when you try
to use it. I've encountered this with programs such as Zoomtext and
Talking Typer. The issue with those is they install the voices as standard
SAPI 5 voices, but then restrict them so that they won't work if being used
by a program other than the one they came with.

Otherwise, do you have any other programs running which may want to use the
SAPI 5 synthesizer? NVDA can run into problems if another program is
trying to use the same synthesizer at the same time (if they are both
running, even if both are not trying to speak at once). The workaround is
to set one program to use a different synthesizer.
