Re: Access32 addon
Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>
So where is it hosted exactly? I don't know much about Window Eyees. I do know that for example there used to be an add on for nvda for SAM from Dolphin that allowed dolphin synths to be used, and as sam is freeware then this was fine as you had to buy their products to get the voices then they did not really lose out.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
However one issue we are probably going to see about add ons is that the next versions of NVDA are going to require add on changes to work correctly and some of the original authors have moved on so who will update them? Re: NVDA Problems with dynamic content

You can use a firefox add on like no script but
that may be more fooling around than you want to do and since it is a work
situation, I doubt you can put it on your machine, but you might want to
ask. Then, there is another possible proboem. I don't know if no
script is being updated in time to work without an interruption when the quantum
version of firefox comes out in about ninew days.
You can turn JAVA script off in the browser but
then you'd have to turn it on again when you aren't working with the
page.

Re: a question about some buttons on websites.
Gene
Here is more information. It appears the site
allows use of both Flash and HTML5. I'd have to do more testing to find
out which is the default. But I got a Flash stream when I used
Firefox. Because I tested with XP, where browser versions aren't current,
such as the ESR Firefox version, I'm not sure what stream others might get, but
the button appears to work properly. I stayed in browse mode in Firefox
and I used the space bar. You may have a problem where, for some reason,
whatever format is being used with your browser on the site isn't being played
by your system. Using a different browser may result in a different format
being played or perhaps the other browser will play the format that isn't being
played now.

On videos instead of it playing automaticly there is a start playback button. I hit it with enter, space bar and even move the mouse to focuse on it and nothing happens. I have noticed the same thing on submittion buttons on CD baby and a few other sites. It is as if there is something inside the button that NVDA can’t quite see. Can anyone on list take a look at www.b99.tv, search for the flintstones and pick any or the 169 search results and find out what is inside that button that NVDA can’t seem to focuse on and activate it. It identifies it as a button and as a playback button but can’t activate it.

Re: NVDA Problems with dynamic content
Gene
Have you looked in advanced settings in options for
the check box that says Warn me when websites try to redirect or reload the
page? You probably have and it may have no bearing on this problem.
If you turn off JAVA script support, you will be able to look at the page
without part of it updating but you may not be able to do what you want on the
page. But if you want to see what is there just to see what you haven't
seen on that part of the page, that's an option. Or you could select all,
copy it to the clipboard and look at it in a word processor or Notepad.
But again, this is to look at the content of the page and I don't know if there
is any way to interact with any part of the page when using a word
processor. I discussed the landmarks setting in another message but I have
no idea if that will help and I suspect you've already tried it.

I use a braille display, most of the time with voice turned off. What I see is constant change under my fingers, which doesn't give me time to click on links or buttons. It isn't the whole page, but just areas on some pages, like carousels, and stuff like that. I haven't found any settings in Firefox that allow me to stop that. Any suggestions, please? Again, Jaws did that years ago (I stopped using it in 2008!), so I suppose it can be done. Ciao, Ollie

That's exactly the issue. NVDA doesn't have a way to stop refresh of some dynamic areas, which is superannoying, because it doesn't give you time to read or act on the given area. This has been going on forever, and apparently no solution is in view. Or is it? Ciao, Ollie

Re: NVDA Problems with dynamic content
Gene
I'm not sure just What you have in mind.
Should NVDA give the user more control of what is
spoken? Can't this already be done by a combination of the dynamic content
setting and land mark settings in the browser? What do other
screen-readers do better?
If you are talking about situations where pages
refresh, JAWS, the only other screen-reader I'm familiar with in current
production where this behavior can be regulated, allows you to turn page
refreshes off but it can't stop all page refreshes. Firefox has a setting
that stops all refreshes and notifies the user when a page wants to refresh,
requiring manual permission.
This appears to me to be something the browser
should be able to be set to control.
We've seen discussion recently about an expanding
newer paradigm that screen-readers should receive accessibility
information from the browser as the main means of access. This would seem
to me to go along with the newer paradigm.

I honestly think NVDA should do something radical about solving the dynamic content issue, either within the screen reader itself, or through an add-on. If other screen readers can handle it, I'm sure NVDA can too. Sorry, I can't code... I'd love to help otherwise. Ciao, and thanks for all the great work the community is doing all the time. If you have the setting on, as it is by default, it
causes NVDA to read changes on the screen as they occur, such as if part of a
screen updates with a stock market report. This may be an incomplete
explanation because if updating is done with ARIA, I don't know if the dynamic
content affects reading. The setting might also stop DOS windows from
being read as well. There is no reason to turn it off.
Once you turn off scripts, web sites won't
uppdate. And if a program you use relies on dynamic content, you might
make some of the program inaccessible.
I don't have the technical knowledge to know if my
explanation is completely accurate or complete, but it more or less explains
what the setting does and why there is no advantage to turning it
off.

Hi Sky
It is Gene from New Zealand. I noted that you said about NVDA and the teckie guy and what he said.
About 10 years ago a basic version of NVDA went into our library system here. it was rolled out to the rest of the country later on that year. Every year they have updated NVDA to the latest version of NVDA
You could not do this with a commercial version of a screen reader. I also told them about windows eyes free offer and they were not even interested. the lady or guy that pit onto the network when we got a award she had a cus who was visually impaired.
It covers from the top of New Zealand to pretty much the bottom of New Zealand at about 150 locations and NVDA is on about 750 computers throughout the network. If they are worried they can always lock it down and also stop portable access as well. In my town here we have computers and i can go up to any one and there is a copy of NVDA on it.
The following link will show there is NVDA on there computers at http://www.aotearoapeoplesnetwork.info/faq/accessibility
The next link shows the locations where NVDA can be accessed throughout New Zealand at http://www.aotearoapeoplesnetwork.org/content/statistics It looks as though the news article goes to another page now so will either find it or remove it the same with magnification.
I can also put the person in contact with them and who to talk to as well.
My website seems to be going up and down and am wondering weather to stay with them or get another or even a new domain name.
Actually i just googled the article so will link it up there. The article can be found at http://www2.nzherald.co.nz/stratford-press/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503390&objectid=10973253 It is the article that went into the local news paper way back then. I would if you do show him show the links straight to those pages as I know on my page where it is it will not help if the site is going up and down. if he is worried about security as i said he can always lock it down but make sure he does not remove the shortcut to start it. NVDA is also in 2 information centres here in Taranaki and also at a training provider here in town. When you do look at the nvda user statistics for new zealand you will notice the update feature is turned off so will not show unless people have it on.
I will tidy up the page tomorrow that has the info on it so it is up to date.
Hope it helps.
