I don't know how long the newest version has been out but I've seen no complaints about NVDA and the new version of Audacity on the blind users' list.

Re: NVDA Problems with dynamic content

I don't know enough about the setting to discuss it except to give an opinion, which is not at all authoritative.  I'd leave it on, which is the default.  I doubt it affects web page reading, at least not much, and if you turn it off, you may encounter times when you have problems,  You can experiment, of course.  If you are on a page or in a program where you want to see if the setting makes any difference, if you are using the desktop layout, use the command 5, that is 5 on the main keyboard.

NVDA should announce these kinds of shortcuts when you look through settings, or it should be user definable whether you hear them.

It should probably work just fine, but the add on for it may need to be updated as well and I've seen nothing here about the Audacity add on being updated.\

Have you looked in advanced settings in options for the check box that says Warn me when websites try to redirect or reload the page?  You probably have and it may have no bearing on this problem.  If you turn off JAVA script support, you will be able to look at the page without part of it updating but you may not be able to do what you want on the page.  But if you want to see what is there just to see what you haven't seen on that part of the page, that's an option.  Or you could select all, copy it to the clipboard and look at it in a word processor or Notepad. But again, this is to look at the content of the page and I don't know if there is any way to interact with any part of the page when using a word processor.  I discussed the landmarks setting in another message but I have no idea if that will help and I suspect you've already tried it.

This may be a problem with announcing landmarks or a related setting.  Look for the report landmarks setting in the document presentation dialog and try unchecking it.  I don't know if that will help but you might as well try changing it.

Please have a look at the debug which I have posted here.

I'm not sure just What you have in mind.  Should NVDA give the
user more control of what is spoken?  Can't this already be done
by a combination of the dynamic content setting and land mark
settings in the browser? What do other screen-readers do better?
If you are talking about situations where pages refresh, JAWS, the
only other screen-reader I'm familiar with in current production
where this behavior can be regulated, allows you to turn page
refreshes off but it can't stop all page refreshes.  Firefox has a
setting that stops all refreshes and notifies the user when a page
wants to refresh, requiring manual permission.
This appears to me to be something the browser should be able to
be set to control.
We've seen discussion recently about an expanding  newer paradigm
that screen-readers should receive accessibility information from
the browser as the main means of access.  This would seem to me to
go along with the newer paradigm.

Hello,

Disabling scripts doesn't always help, because it may cause other
issues
on certain sites.

I honestly think NVDA should do something radical about solving the
dynamic content issue, either within the screen reader itself, or
through an add-on.

If other screen readers can handle it, I'm sure NVDA can too.

Sorry, I can't code... I'd love to help otherwise.
Ciao, and thanks for all the great work the community is doing all

Hi Sky

It is Gene from New Zealand. I noted that you said about NVDA and the teckie guy and what he said.

About 10 years ago a basic version of NVDA went into our library system here. it was rolled out to the rest of the country later on that year. Every year they have updated NVDA to the latest version of NVDA

You could not do this with a commercial version of a screen reader. I also told them about windows eyes free offer and they were not even interested. the lady or guy that pit onto the network when we got a award she had a cus who was visually impaired.

It covers from the top of New Zealand to pretty much the bottom of New Zealand at about 150 locations and NVDA is on about 750 computers throughout the network. If they are worried they can always lock it down and also stop portable access as well.

In my town here we have computers and i can go up to any one and there is a copy of NVDA on it.

The following link will show there is NVDA on there computers at http://www.aotearoapeoplesnetwork.info/faq/accessibility

The next link shows the locations where NVDA can be accessed throughout New Zealand at http://www.aotearoapeoplesnetwork.org/content/statistics

It looks as though the news article goes to another page now so will either find it or remove it the same with magnification.

I can also put the person in contact with them and who to talk to as well.

My website seems to be going up and down and am wondering weather to stay with them or get another or even a new domain name.

Actually i just googled the article so will link it up there. The article can be found at http://www2.nzherald.co.nz/stratford-press/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503390&objectid=10973253

It is the article that went into the local news paper way back then.

I would if you do show him show the links straight to those pages as I know on my page where it is it will not help if the site is going up and down.

if he is worried about security

as i said he can always lock it down but make sure he does not remove the shortcut to start it.

NVDA is also in 2 information centres here in Taranaki and also at a training provider here in town.

When you do look at the nvda user statistics for new zealand you will notice the update feature is turned off so will not show unless people have it on.

I will tidy up the page tomorrow that has the info on it so it is up to date.

Hope it helps.

Hello All. However, the tech at the library looked at it, and he told the group that it was less secure, and they commented that it was better for home use, rather than in corporate environments. Would NV Access staffers like to comment on this issue, and what can be done to address this issue? Because they were going to settle on the Window-Eyes for office option back when it was being updated, but as we all know it got discontinued and they did look at Window-Eyes as an option and they were more in favour of it due to it not being Open Source. They also did have JAWS for a time but got rid of it due to lack of training and they would have had to spend money to get somebody from FS to train them on it.  Any suggestions you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Sky.

This is the version merged in snap
nvda_snapshot_master-14578,d63f4ed4.exe

See below for the demo. its been ticketed by somebody else saying Tamil string or character mutes nvda or something similar. But it seems this is also the case with English espeak. Prior to this snap this crash does not happen.
I mention it here as everyone seems busy with the next release and if this is an espeak issue it may need to be rolled back unless its an easy fix. I don't want to raise an issue as one exists, but I thought I'd mention it here where lots of folk are.

Don't worry when it freezes a restart of nvda will restore things if you are using a snapshot. Obviously prior releases will not get stuck. Nvda actually keeps working, its just that espeak is stuck scratching its head.

So if you used a snapshot build to read my last message I'm sorry about you having to restart nvda.
It seems to be the two characters together that does the damage then. This is on a ticket raised by somebody else, but I was rather surprised to see it mute espeak on these English machines. I suppose its because it tries to say something it cannot say?
Weird.

And have you switched on screenreader support in Sharepoint web interface?

we have recently implemented a share point solution at work. My biggest problem is that NVDA is rather sluggish when working in Microsoft Office 2016. I’ve sent a log file about it, and it mainly happens when arrowing around in Word.

Here is more information. It appears the site allows use of both Flash and HTML5. I'd have to do more testing to find out which is the default. But I got a Flash stream when I used Firefox. Because I tested with XP, where browser versions aren't current, such as the ESR Firefox version, I'm not sure what stream others might get, but the button appears to work properly. I stayed in browse mode in Firefox and I used the space bar. You may have a problem where, for some reason, whatever format is being used with your browser on the site isn't being played by your system. Using a different browser may result in a different format being played or perhaps the other browser will play the format that isn't being played now.

What browser are you using and are you using a current or reasonably current version? This is an HTML5 stream.

Because you discussed your guess that the button wasn't working or that something else had to be worked with, I didn't try activating the button in the most common way. I moved to the button, turned browse mode off, then I pressed enter on the button. The video played. I used Chrome for the test. Did you test with more than one browser? You should always test with at least two browsers when trouble shooting a problem where a web site doesn't do something or do it properly.

Hi friends. Ken here. I have recently found a new cartoons website and I’d love to watch them. There is a problem and I’m pretty sure it’s asn NVDA issue. On videos instead of it playing automaticly there is a start playback button. I hit it with enter, space bar and even move the mouse to focuse on it and nothing happens. I have noticed the same thing on submittion buttons on CD baby and a few other sites. It is as if there is something inside the button that NVDA can’t quite see. Can anyone on list take a look at www.b99.tv, search for the flintstones and pick any or the 169 search results and find out what is inside that button that NVDA can’t seem to focuse on and activate it. It identifies it as a button and as a playback button but can’t activate it.

It should not have it checked as it did not exist in earlier versions at all. Might give it a try if somebody knows if the new release is around as a portable app so I don't have to upset my current working version.

Maybe it only works properly first time when you start with a brand new profile, I don't know, I am only guessing.

I think this is the main problem. some get it to work while others say only its menus do not also of course the show stopper for me is add ons as well.

Hi!
I just upgraded to beta 14 of Firefox 57 to get a first-hand impression of
the slowness, or performance issue, that seems to be plaguing early
adopters. While I agree that it seems to be slower where page loading and
general responsiveness are concerned, I also find that stability and
reliability are great, including complex web pages. It takes some getting
used to but isn't altogether an unpleasant experience as it is quite
deterministic.
Greetings,
Felix

Or there is another possibility.  Your browser may be asking you to allow Flash content.  As I recall, now both Firefox and Chrome ask for approval to run flash content every time it is encountered.  It's a security measure.
