Re: nvda start at start up sometimes turning off in win 10?

Kevin Cussick

I think this was at the log on screen. anyway tested on my machine with the latest stable version of windows 10 and the system is 64 bit and it worked it did not change anything.

On 24/11/2017 09:46, Brian's Mail list account via Groups.I wrote:
I have just been reading on the user list that a couple of people say that the new rc somehow turns off the start at start up checkbox when updating a system.
I cannot test this as it seems to be only on windows 10. I'm thinking it might possibly be that new function mentioned where the system cannot write to certain folders if a windows setting is left on to protect parts of windows. I've no idea how this could occur as to me the result should be the opposite!

Yes, and you can specify options. The usual way is through Run dialog (this dialog's receiving some needed tweaks next year), but you can launch NVDA via PowerShell, Command Prompt, and if adventurous (and if you know the exact executable name for the variant you need to use), Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

The command line options (in a typical Unix-style help message/man page):

NVDA: NonVisual Desktop Access, free and open-source screen reader for Microsoft Windows

Usage:
nvda {-m | -r } [-f filename] [-l loglevel] [--disable-addons | --debug-logging]
... and additional switches (one add-on participates in providing extra switches)

Or:
Fullpathtonvda (e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\NVDA\nvda.exe)

Options:

-m - minimal (no startup sound)
-r - restart NVDA
-f filename - file name for the log file
-l loglevel - logging level
--disable-addons - disables all add-ons
--debug-logging - turns debug logging on for the session

I might be forgetting important ones or may have messed up some. As for add-ons that participate in providing additional command-line switches, StationPlaylist Studio add-on adds several switches related to add-on configuration.

Re: Skype and NVDA

John Isige

You can still get skype 7.X. If you go to skype.com and then pick
download, right above where it says "get skype" or whatever, in other
words the actual download link, there's a thing that just says
"clickable" on some browsers, in the latest Firefox for me it's just a
blank line. Hit enter on that and a menu will drop down and you get five
options, and one of them is called "get classic skype".

Not that I'm trying to get people not to use the new skype, but I didn't
find it all that exciting myself. I could get to most things with tab,
but there seems to be no documentation for one thing. As an example I
searched for accessibility for skype and got the documentation about the
accessibility option you can check, but I don't even see a way to get
into settings in Skype 8. So I'm pretty sure the available documentation
is still for Skype 7.

This morning I booted my system and heard the E-speak welcome message at the login screen and nothing after that. I have NVDA set to start after boot up but it didn't work. I went into settings and it wasn't checked to start after boot up. Is this normal for your settings to change? Thanks.

Re: installing the new beta of NVDA

Well the only known issues I've seen on my machine was that one may need to rename or move a dictionary file for espeak. Otherwise it should work given that your machine is at least running windows7sp1 or later.

it may take a little longer to install, but that is all.

as I say mine did not restart due to an error in writing the log, but an esc and then a manual run seemed Ok and it started every time on start up after that.

Its quite a radical update this time given the removal of a lot of bloat from catering for xp etc.

Re: can't upgrade to the nvda 2017.4 rc

In general, people don't have problems sending messages to the list.  I seldom see messages where people complain of their message not reaching the list.  One way to determine what makes sense on a list, as far as how to do things is to ask yourself, what would happen if members in general did what I do or am thinking of doing.  If members in general answered every message with the same information in a thread, the list would be almost all repetitive messages and be unuseable.  If someone does have problems sending or receiving mail, if they discuss it on list, solutions may be found.  But sending repetitive messages to every person who comments on a topic isn't the solution.

Unless of course as I often find, messages never get to the list or at least
not always and sometimes hoot of order.
I sympathise with this as it happens a lot with my isp.

Please don't send repetitive messages with the same information to every
answer in a thread you are participating in.   I have now counted four or
five messages saying you can't remove it and three saying Microsoft
Disability removed it.  If people are following the thread, they will see
the first message.  Sending the same information because you believe people
won't see the first one is clutter.

I got rid of it with help from someone at the Microsoft disability line.

Well I think its better to just reformat.

Whoever loaded this should be really told off for doing so.

Even its users have had issues uninstalling, upgrading etc.

Worse some have reported that it has taken over their system etc, etc, etc.

I would never used best by again, reformat the computer and be done with it
or even just get another one which is not best buy.

Hi all,

NVDA 2017.4rc2 has just been released for testing.

Changes from RC1 include:

• The message shown in NVDA’s About dialog is again correctly shown in the user’s configured language.
• It is again possible to connect to Handy Tech Braille Star 40 devices using bluetooth.
• Fixed an issue where overriding handy tech display gestures resulted in warnings about malformed input gesture identifiers.

Running nvda with command line switches?

Norman <lists@...>

Hello.

Is it possible to run nvda from the command line with different options?

For example, what i'm thinking is to have a script that launches nvda and automatically brings up nvda remote.

Anyone have any thoughts for me?
