It may be the unregistered dlls problem
again. Others can comment further and I don't know if it could cause such
problems but it causes problems when office is removed so that's my
guess.
I bet you can't use Internet Explorer, Firefox, or

I think its pretty obvious that the calculation could be done fairly easily, but the question is, if it was just a part of what you get now, would that be OK? If you want a separate function key then there seems to be a great demand for non clashing keys just now and its getting harder to find them as we go onward.

I don't really understand Chess but have blind friends who do. Are you saying you would like this to be self voicing completely or just so it can speak via nvda. I suppose you would need to really talk with one of the developers at NV Access in the latter case as obviously any code written would need to be using one of the supported APIs nvda can see, or trying to find controls would be hard. However does it say the moves and what the outcomes are already? If so it might be better to use the self voicing route and let those using it with nvda simply use a voice off profile when the exe file is running.

I wrote the program so that a sighted person could play with a regular chessboard, across the room from the computer, without using the mouse or keyboard (although it is not entirely hands free). I did not intend this application for blind people, but have discovered there is interest in the blind community. ChessSpeak was developed without my awareness of NVDA. One user told me he is using NVDA and that led me to this group. How can I make ChessSpeak more friendly to blind people? What are some very general, and then some specific guidelines? I have read the Developers' Guide ( https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/developerGuide.html ) and understand it in a general way, although my Python skills are not strong. If anyone could offer me specific suggestions or help for my application I would appreciated it. If anyone wants to develop the NVDA linkage to ChessSpeak that would be wonderful.

Re: Very frustrating error in Outlook 2016
Brian's Mail list account
It reminds me of when a program forgets to tell nvda its done something. If as you say moving the focus away and back fixes it, then it could be a problem with Outlook itself or nvda simply not getting the event, but that seems odd as if that was the case why do the 200 work in the first place. When you go to the message and come back and it reads it, is the 200+ moved as well?

You put a few different questions here. I will try to answer them: 1. The threshold is at the nth item not related to a position on the screen. For example, if the 124th item is the last one from the beginning that NVDA does not speak, then the 125th one is spoken. If I am arrowing down the list, this 124th item would be at the bottom of the screen. However, when reading from the spoken items backwards up towards the beginning of the list, the 125th item would be at the top of the screen. An up-arrow to the silent 124th item would keep the 124th item at the top of the screen. So, the position on the screen is not related to the problem. 2. If the item is not spoken, I can press tab once and then when I press shift + tab back onto the silent item, NVDA does speak out its details. 3. Even when the message is silent after pressing the arrow key, it will open when I press the enter key and NVDA will read the body of the message correctly in the usual way. This means that the cursor is still active on the item and all windows controls such as up and down arrows, tabs etc. are functioning. It's just that NVDA is silent on that particular list item details. In this case it does look like there is no data coming to nvda about any scrolling or highlighting of a message. If you use nvda/b does this reveal the missing text and can it be gotten to in one of the navigation modes, as to me at least if it can actually be seen by nvda, then the problem seems to be that something is stopping nvda from knowing its actually at the point that you need to read the info. NVDA is not missing part of the screen. It is reading the screen all around the list. The problem is consistent with NVDA only reading the last 200 items in a list that exceeds 200 messages in length. As only 40 messages at most can be displayed on the screen, there is no way that this problem relates to screen capture! When I remove enough emails from the list so that 200 messages or less are now contained in the list, all the messages are read when moving the up or down arrow on the list. To make sure that the problem is not specific to any individual messages, I deliberately removed messages from the bottom of the list. When, for example, 20 messages were removed from the bottom of a list of 450 messages, the first messages spoken moved up from number 250 to number 230. It is as if NVDA has a frame of maximum 200 list items and positions this frame at the bottom of the list rather than at the beginning. This holds true even after I reverse the sort order of the messages in the list. I have attached a more precise log file that shows what is happening. Here’s the story: I prefer to display messages in the various folders as a simple list and Outlook defaults to showing them in groups. So, I have learnt to turn off “show in groups” whenever I come across it. Since Office 365 online, I find that when I go to the “Sent Items” folder with groups turned off, I can see only the message that is under the cursor. I would expect to hear the next message in the list after pressing down-arrow as in the Inbox and most other folders. However, here there is silence, even though I press down or up-arrow many times. If I keep pressing down arrow until message 50 (more or less, it varies!) suddenly, I can hear all the messages listed. If I up-arrow back up the list, I cross a threshold at the same message where the voicing began and all is silent again. Down-arrow back down the list and I break back into voicing the messages at the same threshold of message 51. If I press “end” I will drop down to the last message in the Sent Items windows (about number 250, for example). I hear it fine. And repeating up-arrow voices all the prior messages as I reverse up the list until number 50 again when all goes silent. In the attached log. I positioned on the “Sent Items” folder with “Show in groups” unchecked. I then restarted NVDA to freshen the log. In the log, I have typed in a message bound by three asterisks (***) to make it easier to find where the error report starts. Back to my story: Then, with the refreshed NVDA, I pressed alt+v>a>b for the “Arrange By” View menu. I then press up-arrow twice to “Show in Groups” which was unchecked so I press space bar to check it. Now, when I press up-arrow or down-arrow, I hear the group title and then each of the messages that were not being voiced before. To test this I went back into the “arrange By menu and turn off “Show in groups” and, again, the messages in the top 50 are not being voiced. You will see the following error line if you look at my attached log: accRole failed: (-2147417848, 'The object invoked has disconnected from its clients.', (None, I carried out some further tests and found that, in fact, the list is only showing the last 200 messages in the list. When I have 250 messages, the first 50 messages are silent under NVDA, until I reach the 51st message. As I frequently have about 420 messages in my sent Items before archiving, I usually find that the 220th message is silent and then suddenly the 221st message is spoken! To relieve my frustration, I loaded JAWS 2016 which does not have any problem reading each message from top to bottom in the Sent Items list. Should I have to admit to all my NVDA critics that NVDA cannot do it and they had better use JAWS? Please help a Chess program developer
fredm73@...
I am the author of a free chess playing program, ChessSpeak. I have a YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NXo8GzIORQ) and a Users' Guide (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1IIazPm57vNei4w51fnxBpUzSRnuL58ncBn3xXhSCEik). This program allows for speech input from the player and replies with voice output. It has been used by many players over the past few years.
I have read the Developers' Guide (https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/developerGuide.html) and understand it in a general way, although my Python skills are not strong. If anyone could offer me specific suggestions or help for my application I would appreciated it. If anyone wants to develop the NVDA linkage to ChessSpeak that would be wonderful.

Yes most definitely!, turn on Narrator with CTRL+Windows+Enter, and go to any image, Press: Shift+Caps Lock+D. Narrator will describe the image, even if there is no text. Very powerful! Please email me off list if you want. I believe that Narrator uses some kind of service to do this image description. David Moore Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Re: setting up winamp
JM Casey <crystallogic@...>
Hi. You should use winamp v5.666 with Windows 10. When my friend built this machine for me, he had already installed winamp. However, he did it incorrectly. I did not ask him what procedure he used, but not only was the version not the latest build, but it somehow ended up being installed into the wrong directory; one that my user account was not supposed to modify with admin rights, so every time I tried to save settings, they would just revert back to their previous state. I had to uninstall and re-install the programme myself, and now it works great, though it does crash more in Windows 10 than it did in XP (not while playing though, thankfully). Make sure it installs into the program files\x86 folder. Then use Windows 10 file associations to set what you want Winamp to play. I have it set to all audio formats, but no video files (VLC is the master of all video players, after all).

I know that there has been lots of responses already but I too have often had difficulties installing various versions of Winamp. There are lots of versions out there and not all work well on Windows 10 at least. Some version when installed will not open mp3 files properly from File Explorer despite association and other weird issues Like freezing during the startup wizard when you select skins etc. Generally I have learnt to only use the version of that can be downloaded from www.nimite.com Essentially what I would do is in-install the version of Winamp sshe is using and download the version from Nimite. No guarantees of course but this is the way I have overcome Winamp difficulties of this sort in the past. David Griffith My Blind Access and Guide dog Blog

I was talking to a friend of mine earlier this morning and she said she's having trouble setting up winamp. She tried uninstalling and reinstalling it but some of her files won't play. Are there boxes she needs to check or uncheck?
Thanks so much for your help in advance.

Re: setting up winamp
JM Casey <crystallogic@...>
I have been reading the thread backwards (yes, I know) so haven’t seen all responses yet, but the only thing to keep in mind is to make sure you use the “classic” skin and not any of the “modern” ones that come with winamp. The programme will still work if you use a modern skin, but you will have trouble getting your screen-reader to say much that’s useful.

Re: setting up winamp
Gene
I'm sorry, but many of these commands are
wrong.
X plays the current track. C toggles between
play and pause. Z moves to the previous track and b moves to the next
track. Control z moves to the first track and control b moves to the last
track.
The movement arrow commands are
correct, that is left and right arrow move back and forward in a track.
Press and release to move by one increment, I think five seconds. Press
and hold to move quickly back and forward.
I don't have my Winamp set to
adjust volume so I can't conveniently check the up and down arrow
commands.
