Thanks! This is exactly what I was needing.

In Laptop layout, you can press NVDA + home or NVDA + end to switch between navigation modes. Once you are on screen review, keep the NVDA key pressed and just use your arrow keys to navigate and enter to activate something. If you want to navigate word by word, hold the ctrl key pressed and use left and right arrow keys. Sor for word by word navigation you press ctrl + NVDA + left and right keys after you chose screen review.

To compare, in laptop layout object navigation is activated when you hold down shift + NVDA. For object navigation you dont have to change the navigation mode like in screen review. Just hold shift + NVDA pressed anywhere and continue to navigate by arrow keys. Press m to drag the mouse on the object and left mouse click to activate it.

There is no setting to use the equivalent of the JAWS cursor with standard movement keys such as up and down arrow.  There is an equivalent to the JAWS cursor, screen review and you navigate mostly using the numpad in that mode.  It's somewhat similar to Window-eyes in that you can still use the arrow keys on the main keyboard and the main navigation commands for screen review are on the numpad.  This is for the desktop layout.  I don't know what the navigation commands are for the laptop layout.

After using screen review, you should return to object navigation.  If you do, certain review commands you may want to use won't work correctly. For example I don't like using the read current line command NVDA uses.  I use numpad 8 which reads the current object, which acts the same as read current line.

I started using NVDA recently, and I really was surprised at how similar the default keyboard layout is to that of JAWS. Im sure this wasnt done by accident. The only thing is, that navigation and focus does work a little differently. And of ourse, theres no JAWS cursor, but that particular JFW feature is growing less and less useful as times goes on (though I still use it a fair bit in certain older applications that dont have screen-reader support built in or any add-ons).

NVDAs web support is great, and while I happen to only have Office 2010 on this Windows 10 machine, Outlook and Word both function pretty much as well as they do with JFW. Others have reported issues with office 2016/365, but, well, this isnt unique to nVDA users so far as I can tell.

Yes the reading navigation keys.

I've been using JAWS for 20+ years. It's like my fingers have a mind of their own. Will be very difficult to change my habits from wanting to use the numpad keys for navigation.

Will definitely take some time.

Like using the arrow keys tab etc etc.

You would find it quite easy to pick up.

Depending if you install nvda to your pc you will have the choice of the desktop layout or a lap top layout for your keyboard.

If you install nvda to your pc it is the alt key + ctrl key + letter N to start nvda.

To get into your preferences is the nvda key + the letter N

To quit your copy of nvda is the nvda key + the letter Q

Where i refer to the nvda key this is a modifier key and can be the insert key the extended insert key or the caps lock key. You would use one of the with a key to turn off nvda. for example if the insert key is chosen you would use the insert key + letter Q to turn off nvda.

NVDA comes default with the e speak synth but you can use other free or paid synths.

The synth you are talking about is a commercial one and can come as a add on or a sapi 5 version  at a cost.

There are keys combo that are simular to jaws and plus you can change them if needed.

no, i dont think and its not important updating anything for me.

things to think about them and put my effort to achieve them!
updating and learning new technology is not important for me and is
not a goal in my life!

Anyway, about Win7, Really there're two things with NVDA, or for that mind,
even JAWS, which stand up as a challenge. First off, I don't think a 64 bit
driver ever was created. Secondly, I mention about getting this display
used, as the guy who sold it to me didn't have a male to female serial
cable, plus, even if he did, my Windows 10 machines don't have serial ports
anyway, so whoops, there went that idea.

Secondly, the company who makes the Alva, Optilec I think, isn't around
anymore, and, he didn't have a power cord. Fortunately, if you connect the
display via USB, then it will bus power itself. God forbid you ever go into
its setup menu and disable USB. LOL! I'm not about to be a guinea pig and
try it. LOL!

In NVDA, I've tried BRLTTY, but that doesn't work. I think I'd need a serial
connection for that to work, and plus, again, I'd need the 64 bit driver.

Anyway, so, yeah...

You mean your Alva Satalite does not work on win ten? I have an Alva Not
sure what it is. It works on 7. Not sure if it’s the one you have. Would
be good if it would work on ten. What if the old xp dies? I know a friend

do with audio files like convert old vhs video tapes to mp3.

Completely agreed. OK, I do have an XP machine still, but it's definitely
not my primary system, and I only use it mainly for old legacy stuff that
refuses to work on newer technology... like my Alva Satalite display. I'd
kill! to get that thing working on my Windows 10 machine, but every hack,
and every driver I've tried, it just won't do it.

With respect, This is a wrong perception. Updates nowadays are bringing
more security and more functionality. It is more than important to keep
everything uptodate. Support will stop after a while for what you are using
and it will be harder and harder to adapt to new technologies. If you keep
updating regularly, you will be used to learn new functions and it will be
very easy to adapt to new things. In 5 years screen readers will be much
much different than today. For those who keep staying behind, they will
loose the path. Please be aware of that.

Re: Some misstakes in new rc NVDA version

my language is persian, when i use internet, read my religious books
in english and also use windows, everythings are in english.
i wish to hear everything with US accent and this great feature is
available for me in espeak ng.
if usual espeak had this feature, maybe i used nvda 2016.1 forever!

I wouldn't go so far as to say "Go back to 2016.1". I actually liked
some of the espeak-NG improvements and it's only the latest version that
mangled things that shouldn't have been mangled. They did change the
pronunciations of "also" "because" and "muse" in a nice way, or at least
in a way that I know is more natural and that I could adjust to. It's
things like "for the" and "for a" and "percent" and the emphasis on the
i in words like "possible" and "necessarily" that annoy me, because
those words/phrases were all pronounced correctly as recently as 2017.3.
There are a couple teeny things that aren't in the version of espeak in
the Speech Player in Espeak addon that I miss from Espeak-NG. I hope
that the people now working on this synth will find what was changed to
effect these particular words and put the code back the way it was.

i love advantages of usual espeak with one feature of speech player in
espeak addon, because we can select to hear american sentences with US
accent!
but in old espeak, we did not have this freedom of selection between
UK and US accent and this feature, is the only advantage of espeak ng!
hope that my explanation be clear for you and i wish that you help me
in this regard!
for me who dont use addons, i wished that i had all these advantages
with espeak included in nvda and what do you think about returning to
nvda 2016.1 to avoide these issues?

I wonder if that is worth looking at for those experiencing problems

we put punctuation level none and nvda speaks some of them!

Re: Some misstakes in new rc NVDA version

Sharni-Lee Ward

I never understood how you could set it so that it would say sentences
with different accents on the fly. How ... would it know ... which
sentences ... were written... by Americans ...????

I hope
that the people now working on this synth will find what was changed to
effect these particular words and put the code back the way it was.

thanks extremely for your attention and your kind attitude towards me.
yes, the old espeak was very great in many cases, and many times i
wished that i use nvda 2016.1 without update forever to avoide
problems of espeak ng.
i love advantages of usual espeak with one feature of speech player in
espeak addon, because we can select to hear american sentences with US
accent!
but in old espeak, we did not have this freedom of selection between
UK and US accent and this feature, is the only advantage of espeak ng!
hope that my explanation be clear for you and i wish that you help me
in this regard!
for me who dont use addons, i wished that i had all these advantages
with espeak included in nvda and what do you think about returning to
nvda 2016.1 to avoide these issues?
God bless you and his infinite mercy i pray for you always!

Hi, quentin,

Thanks for diligent for responding and giving heads up into this matter.
However, I am thinking if we could be switch back to an old eSpeak
rather I am only suggesting what's best instead of making changes or
update on our synthesis. in this way could fix or resolve the issue
cause I am afraid to update and installed again for not letting our
setup will be messed up. For me, it is more feasible to use the old
eSpeak instead. For the meantime, I am just using my portable copy of
the old nvda into my flash drive which happened works well to do my
task. I am bit concern here cause some of us is heavily reliable with
use of nvda as their screen reader into our machine. Apologize for
making this possible suggestion here.

we put punctuation level none and nvda speaks some of them!

Re: Some misstakes in new rc NVDA version

the sapi5 version of espeak does not work for me in the way of my

using sapi5 version of espeak.

reading and writing, and the problems (most of which were perfectly fine in
the previous version of NVDA) are so jarring that I keep being yanked out of
my enjoyment of whatever story/post I'm reading. By the sounds of it, a lot
more languages have been scrambled than just English Great Britain.

Couldn't we get an NVDA 2017.4.1 with the old espeak from the previous
version put in? Until the issues with the current Espeak-NG are solved, it
seems the best solution to satisfy everyone. What's the point of a screen
reader if the synth isn't understandable to its users? I'm sure those who
have discovered this in non-English languages are having an even harder time
of it...

We changed from using eSpeak NG 1.49.1 in 2017.3 to using 1.49.2,
but
for
those not using the Next or Master snaps, the RC builds (or the
final
2017.4 when it comes out) are likely the first time they've tried
it.
So,
as Brian guessed, it's likely that the issues here are not specific
to
this
RC as such, but to the change in eSpeak version, since the RCs are a
bit
more widely distributed. It would be good to get confirmation from
Marco
though.

Quentin.

Your subject line refers to the new RC version.

Is this problem something new in the latest RC version and did not
exist
in
earlier (RC or otherwise) versions, or does the same problem also
exist

in
older (especially standard release) versions of NVDA?

Re: Normally, a horrible! idea, but can auto update be shut off?

hello.
i use xp and never dont recieve notification for update.
i think that nvda website detects my windows and checking for update
is desabled for me!
even if i use help and then check for update, nvda says no update
available and for this reason, i am sure that you dont recieve
notification on windows xp, unless you go to the website and want to
download and install nvda 2017.4 manually.
hope that help, God bless you!

This all said, I know that the directive was made you must have at

My guess is, it'll be smart enough to see that it can't update to
anything compatible, but, is that the case? Will it nag me every time
I load NVDA, or will it know to keep me back on 2017.3, and not offer
anything further? If it'll keep checking, then can I somehow in
preferences tell it not to? I'd normally highly discourage doing this,
but in my unique situation, it might be necessary.
Don't worry, I do! have plenty other systems running Windows 10, so
it's not like my only Windows machine is way out of date.

Re: Some misstakes in new rc NVDA version

Sharni-Lee Ward

For me, having espeak as a sapi5 voice wouldn't work because inflection doesn't apply to sapi voices the way it does with the normal espeak package or the Speech Player in Espeak addon. I always have inflection maxed out. I am currently using the Speech Player in Espeak addon because I do a lot of reading and writing, and the problems (most of which were perfectly fine in the previous version of NVDA) are so jarring that I keep being yanked out of my enjoyment of whatever story/post I'm reading. By the sounds of it, a lot more languages have been scrambled than just English Great Britain.

Couldn't we get an NVDA 2017.4.1 with the old espeak from the previous version put in? Until the issues with the current Espeak-NG are solved, it seems the best solution to satisfy everyone. What's the point of a screen reader if the synth isn't understandable to its users? I'm sure those who have discovered this in non-English languages are having an even harder time of it...

Re: Some misstakes in new rc NVDA version

hi quentin again.
thanks extremely for your attention and your kind attitude towards me.
yes, the old espeak was very great in many cases, and many times i
wished that i use nvda 2016.1 without update forever to avoide
problems of espeak ng.
i love advantages of usual espeak with one feature of speech player in
espeak addon, because we can select to hear american sentences with US
accent!
but in old espeak, we did not have this freedom of selection between
UK and US accent and this feature, is the only advantage of espeak ng!
hope that my explanation be clear for you and i wish that you help me
in this regard!
for me who dont use addons, i wished that i had all these advantages
with espeak included in nvda and what do you think about returning to
nvda 2016.1 to avoide these issues?
God bless you and his infinite mercy i pray for you always!

cause I am afraid to update and installed again for not letting our
setup will be messed up.

Gene,

You bring up something which poses a question I've had for a while now.

Is there really any advantage to using screen review over object nav, or vice versa?

I’m sure this wasn’t done by accident. The only thing is, that navigation and focus does work a little differently. And of ourse, ther’es no “JAWS cursor”, but that particular JFW feature is growing less and less useful as times goes on (though I still use it a fair bit in certain older applications that don’t have screen-reader support built in or any add-ons).

NVDA’s web support is great, and while I happen to only have Office 2010 on this Windows 10 machine, Outlook and Word both function pretty much as well as they do with JFW. Others have reported issues with office 2016/365, but, well, this isn’t unique to nVDA users so far as I can tell.

Yes the reading navigation keys.

I've been using JAWS for 20+ years. It's like my fingers have a mind of their own. Will be very difficult to change my habits from wanting to use the numpad keys for navigation.

Will definitely take some time.

Do you mean by keyboard navigation the usual?

Well the time has come that I can no longer afford to pay the Freedom Scientific SMA JAWS upgrades (Been using JAWS for over 20 years), so I'm turning to NVDA.

My first two questions:

Does NVDA use a keyboard navigation system similar to JAWS? If not, is there a way I can configure it to work this way?

Also can I configure NVDA to use the Eloquence module currently installed on my PC (Thanks to JAWS?) If not, is there a NVDA software synth available that's just as good to use?

Thanks for any help.

Gene, I'm sorry I missed your question. I tried deducing the level of comment by its contents, but I found it was too hard. Some posts have several hundreds of comments. Every top level comment might have a tree of a few dozen replies. And depending on the topic of the post, sometimes it is not clear at all whether the comment is a top level one or a reply. Also my brain gets tired of trying to deduce the level of the comment. Now since I get the offset of a comment directly, it is going to be much easier for my brain, since I would need to listen and only compare the number (offset being equal to the top-level comment offset).

The setting is in the voice settings dialog in preferences.  The shortcut command is control NVDA key v.

Hi!

I just wanted you to know, that I hear many messages in this thread in a language I do not understand.

Are you typing in another language? NVDA is reading your messages in a different language to me LOL!

The review cursor by default if you are using object navigation follows the system cursor.  But what I'm saying is if you only want to read the top level comments, then don't you have to move to every comment and measure the distance?  My question is how that is better than reading a few words of each comment to see if you want to continue.  But maybe you have to read enough of each comment that it is slower enough to matter.

Evidently, the speak position command has more functions than in the old version of NVDA I use.  So you are correct that to hear the numbers, you have to issue the command twice.

Also, the idea of being able to jump to the next occurrence of text starting a certain point from the left of the screen might be related to another feature NVDA should have.  If you have a page with two or three columns or more and you want to only read one column, you should be able to define a start point and an end point farther to the right.  Then you could read and only have that defineed column read.  ASAP had a read column feature in JAWS.  I seldo had to use it but I would imagine it was very useful to some people,  Consider one use with NVDA:

Suppose you got a poorly formatted PDF document where pages didn't decolumnize properly.  Rather than have decolumnization occur, if you could just have the page recognized with no decolumnization and set the columns yourself, you might be able to read such documents.

I am an NVDA newbie, so I don't know how or why this works, but it works for me. I tried it on both Reddit and Hacker News in Google Chrome and Firefox. I don't have to press any extra buttons to route the review cursor, perhaps the review cursor just follows the system cursor in my case.

After your email I tried pressing Insert+Delete only once, and it indeed speaks the horizontal offset of current object in (I assume) pixels. After pressing it twice it speaks the horizontal offset in percentage of the screen width. So either way can be used.

I like your idea about NVDA addon that would let you jump between paragraphs with the same offset. I might try to write such a plugin myself when I have some free time.

I haven't tried this but I don't see how using the cursor location feature would help much.  You would still have to move to the beginning of each comment and check the distance.  If that would save you time in not having to read any of the comment, I don't know but having to move to the next comment and check the distance of each comment would seem to be cumbersome and perhaps not much easier than reading a bit of each comment to see if it’s a reply.  but those who try this may explain that I'm wrong and why.

Perhaps what we need, if this can be done, is a feature or a plugin you can set to look for text that starts a certain distance from the left side of the screen and then be able to jump to the next text that starts at the same number of pixels from the left of the screen.  You could issue a next and a back command to move to these items.  So the idea may lead to a good solution if such a feature can be developed.

By the way, you don't have to issue the command twice.  It does the same thing if issued once or more times.

I've been playing with NVDA and just discovered a simple solution: press
Insert + Numpad Delete twice (Report review cursor location) and it will
tell you the distance from the left edge of the screen. The greater the
distance - the deeper the level of the comment.

I think in theory something can be done on the client side to make the
comments more readable for screenreader users.. You can write a browser
plugin that would modify a page to include the level of the comment
explicitly for example. But this is only in theory: my knowledge of
javascript/HTML/CSS is too poor to write it myself.

Re: problems with nvda 2017-4 the new update?

Quentin Christensen

Hi Rusty,

Welcome to the group!

If you've just updated NVDA, can I recommend rebooting the computer please?  Normally you shouldn't necessarily need to, but we've seen a few reports of various random problems this time around after people update NVDA and before rebooting the computer.

Do advise if it still happens after that (and particularly then, which browser you are using).

Regards

Quentin.

Hi folks, I just updated to the latest NVDA and I'm having some issues
but I'm not sure if it's user error.

Navigating by headings on google and amazon seems to be goofed up.
Yesterday it was fine, today, after the update there seems to be a
problem.

Is any one else having difficulty?

I just went to the NVDA page to find this email list, and navigating
by headings on that page is no problem. Was there a change at Google
or amazon, or an issue with NVDA or theoretically a problem with my
pc?

Thanks!
Rusty
