Error when selecting Download voices from NVDA Vocalizer menu

Gerardo Corripio

Am I the only one, that when activating the download Extra voices from THE NVDA Vocalizer menu that one gets when installing and activating the NVDA Vocalizer voice package, I get an error page? Hopefully this can be fixed in an update, because it'd save time in wanting to browse to see what other voices there are, especially trying the Premium ones.

Hi,
I wants had a copy of the Alex voice that worked with Anna VDA. It wasn't a full-fledged voice though. It could read a few things, but that's about it. Really wish someone would make one that was full-fledged. If it existed, I would download it in a heartbeat.

We don't know what link was given to Bible seeker by the person referenced in the first message.  If it wasn't to the site of the owner or the authorized distributor of the product, who knows what may be trying to install itself from the site or may have been added to the program?  The first question for anyone getting malware warnings in the ddiscussion is what site is being used?

If you have the latest version of Windows 10 you don't need to run the
malware program because there is built-in virus program called Windows
Defender Security. If your machine seems to be infected you need to keep
your virus definition up to date, then run offline to scan it. It will
restart your PC and then, it will boot for couple of minutes. Once, the
machine has been restarted you could check the history if the said
threats were removed, or deleted.

At this point, we don't know enough to form proper opinions or conclusions. One thing that should be checked is whether something is using more processor power than it should.  I don't recall what version of Windows you are running but once you tell us, people can tell you how to see how much processor power is being used by everything on your system in total.  If the number is excessively high, we can start looking at the amount of power individual programs use.  This problem may be the result of something using a lot of computer resources and whatever it is may be able to be removed or stopped if it isn't needed.

Yes, I sometimes use firefox, but the problem is the same.

Although I am not 100% sure, I would like to conclude that the problem
is caused by the type of processor and the speed on my machine.

Why, because on my other laptop which use intel (R(core(tm)I4 with 4GB

My new HP laptop which gives me this problem use intel (r) seleron
processor at the speed of 1.6 GHZ.

I have recently upgraded to nvda 2017.4, but the unresponsiveness
still persists.

May I know whether this may be due to my laptop's using intel seleron
processor at a speed of less than 2ghz?

Does the processor type and its speed have any impact on nvda's
functionality / dysfunctionality?

What processor and speed should one take into account when buying a
laptop so that nvda may respond positively?

I am frustrated, because this happens only with nvda and not with jaws.

I use jaws demo as I have no licence for it to do some work on my PC,
but it responds very well that I do not have the same problems as
those with nvda.

If the processor type and its speed are the cause of nvda'
unresponsiveness, why only it and not other screen reader like jaws?

Your urgent assistance in this regard is appreciated in advance.

Please, please, please help, I am getting frustrated everyday.

I solely rely on nvda as my jaws is only 40 minutes.

Hope you understand.

Re: nvda unresponsiveness

Why not try out the Resource Monitor AddOn which is found on the NVDA's AddOn page? This will be able to tell us the processor power, among other data. For instance on my HP425 Laptop this is what it has to say; sorry its in Spanish but...

Carga media de la CPU 50%, Núcleo 1: 71.5%, Núcleo 2: 28.6%. Física: 1.36gb de 1.75gb utilizada (78%). Virtual: 1.66gb de 3.49gb utilizada (47.6%). Física: 1.36gb de 1.75gb utilizada (78%). Virtual: 1.66gb de 3.49gb utilizada (47.6%). and my Laptop's general specs are (this is not reported by Resource Monitor just to let you know; this info is found by using the Review mode within the My Computer Properties under My Computer icon) its specs are Laptop HP 425: Procesador AMD Athlon II D.C. P320 (2.1GHz), Memoria de 2GB DDR3, Disco Duro de 320GB, Pantalla de 14", DVD±RW, Red Inalámbrica, Windows 7 as mentioned above, 32 Bytes. I'm using the NVDA Vocalizer voices, thus the importance of what synthesizer are you using? What AddOns etc?

Hope this helps some.

Hi Brian,
No need to bet. Its not a challenge, its for test at 1st, and work with after.
only testing would tell if it won't, and as I've said so far no one
said it didn't work.
It should work with any sound card happen to be working with the PC
before rebooting to safe boot. the idea of the patch is to load all
sound card drivers that already installed on that system, that's what
makes it working fine with all of what I have
or have access to of PC's and laptops.
and sure enough, there are no fix or reg hack works for everything,
but so far this is the best safe boot audio enabled reg patch of all
time.
BTW if it didn't work, you can control that audio silent PC via NVDA
remote auto connect, reboot it into safe mode and reboot it back to
normal after job done.

Good morning,

For what it is worth,

I had trouble removing avg as well and had to get sighted help.

Hi Gene,
That's looks good and simple.
If you like to change the number "0" at the end of the DropBox link
into "1" that would make it downloadable without having to log in to
dropbox, some people don't have a dropbox account.
also if you like to put a notice that it's not been tested with all
sound card drivers, so its better to test it if sighted person around.
BTW I have tested it with NVDA remote auto connect enabled, on the PC
needs troubleshooting, of course that needs a few arrow downs in the
boot page at the selection boot page to high lite the checked
"network" option before reboot into safe mode.
and that is 100% working tested a lot by me, sense the PC to be
controlled doesn't need working sound card for that.

How to access safe mode in Windows and exit it with the NVDA screen reader
by Hareth and co
What is safe mode?
Safe mode is a troubleshooting option for Windows that starts your computer
in a limited state. Only the basic files and drivers necessary to run
Windows are started. Safe mode is useful for troubleshooting problems with
programs and drivers that might not start correctly or that might prevent
Windows from starting correctly.

To use NVDA in safe mode

You will need to install a registry patch first. This file can be found at
https://www.dropbox.com/s/jr72u3sk7p0za2r/Activate_Sound_in_Win10_Safe_Mode.zip?dl=0

After it has been installed it will allow you to use NVDA in safe mode. This
has been tested on a Windows 7 and Windows 10 machine and with quite a few
different sound cards.

Directions to go into and out of safe mode in Windows

You can reboot in to safe mode by doing the following:
Press Windows plus R and type msconfig and hit Enter
Press Ctrl plus Tab to get to the "boot tab"
Tab to "safe boot" and check the check mark/check box.
Tab to "base video" and check it as well.
Tab to the OK button and press it. You should get a prompt to restart the
computer to apply the changes.
If you select "restart now" your PC should restart into safe mode.

Please note: When the registry patch has been installed, when you go into
safe mode, you will have sound and be able to use the NVDA screen reader.
Message you will get while in safe mode
To confirm you are in safe mode, you can use the NVDA key + letter B. Below
is the type of message you will get as an example on a Windows 10 machine.
Safe Mode Microsoft (R) Windows (R) (Build 16299.rs3_release.170928-1534)
Safe Mode

After finishing your PC job with safe mode, do the same steps above,
but this time uncheck the two check boxes above for both safe boot, and
base video; and press OK and restart. Your PC will restart to the normal
mode.

Just win8X is missing the confirmed test.
I believe for the best to put a notice
telling people to give it a try when they have a sighted company
around to make sure 100% it works for their PC , before they really
need to preform a task on it when problems happens with it.
My last name is "Al-hamdany" but you can leave it with the 1st only.
and it is a co thing after all. I just mixed the reg
code with the way to restart I was using sense I was sighted PC user
cause its faster to reboot than power of the computer and wait for it
to save stuff and sometimes it jams with something. Plus the standard
boot to the startup menu list is nut accessible
Anyway it served me big time with fixes I, I would never been able to
do without it.

Thanks again

nvda google chrome and spin button edit boxes in shopping sites

Lisa-Maree

Hello,
I have found that nvda does not read the number in spin button edit boxes in
google chrome, such as the ones found on shopping sites when ordering, so
that you can't check how many of each item you have ordered.

Is there a work around for this, or is this just a glitch with google
chrome?
Thanks,

You need to use screen navigation to get to the items as whoever wrote the
software seems to have taken a holiday on that part. Before you decide to
delete though, have a look at the log, which you can read from inside the
software and see exactly what it found. If its just a possibly unwanted bit
of software it might actually be something you want to keep, like a password
finder etc. Many of these tools are seen as malicious when they are not
really.
Also if its cookies be sure no log in or config details are not in that
cookie before you allow it to be deleted.

I don't know what anti virus program you are using, but with
many--particularly McAfee and Symantec products, they give a lot of
false positives. I remember when people running NVDA had all sorts of
problems with Symantec which kept eating up NVDA whenever it updated.

Yes indeed HP laptops if purchased from one of the big stores nearly always come with clutter. They have lots of junk, erm useful demos of expensive software on them and the first job really is to look at what is on there and remove all the unwanted stuff. However do be careful with demos of Microsoft Offiice as uninstalling these has a history of screwing up the registry for screenreader users.

Why, because on my other laptop which use intel (R(core(tm)I4 with 4GB

My new HP laptop which gives me this problem use intel (r) seleron
