Hi

it is just as easy to find the link then use the applications key then if using mozilla fire fox arrow down to save link as then press the enter key.

it will then give you the option to save it to where you want then save it to your pc. If internet exploder it will be save target as etc.

That is the way i usually do it on all files it may depend if you press the enter key on it wheather it gives you the option to open or save as well.

This may be on other websites.

I don't remember what happens if the download link has a 0 at the end.  A page comes up and there is some way to download.  But that isn't the main point.  If you change the 0 to a 1, following the link causes a download to begin without showing any page, as a standard download link does.  1 should be used to avoid confusion.

programs and drivers that might not start correctly or that might prevent
Windows from starting correctly.

To use NVDA in safe mode

You will need to install a registry patch first. This file can be found at
https://www.dropbox.com/s/jr72u3sk7p0za2r/Activate_Sound_in_Win10_Safe_Mode.zip?dl=0


After it has been installed it will allow you to use NVDA in safe mode. This
has been tested on a Windows 7 and Windows 10 machine and with quite a few
different sound cards.

Directions to go into and out of safe mode in Windows

You can reboot in to safe mode by doing the following:
Press Windows plus R and type msconfig and hit Enter
Press Ctrl plus Tab to get to the "boot tab"
Tab to "safe boot" and check the check mark/check box.
Tab to "base video" and check it as well.
Tab to the OK button and press it. You should get a prompt to restart the
computer to apply the changes.
If you select "restart now" your PC should restart into safe mode.

Please note: When the registry patch has been installed, when you go into
safe mode,  you will have sound and be able to use the NVDA screen reader.
Message you will get while in safe mode
To confirm you are in safe mode, you can use the NVDA key + letter B. Below
is the type of message you will get as an example on a Windows 10 machine.

After finishing your PC job with safe mode, do the same steps above,

Hi Gene,
That's looks good and simple.
If you like to change the number "0" at the end of the DropBox link
into "1" that would  make it downloadable without having to log in to
dropbox, some people don't have a dropbox account.
also if you like to put a notice that it's not been tested with all
sound card drivers, so its better to test it if sighted person around.
BTW I have tested it with NVDA remote auto connect enabled, on the PC
needs troubleshooting, of course that needs a few arrow downs in the
boot page at the selection boot page to high lite the checked
"network" option before reboot into safe mode.
and that is 100% working tested a lot by me, sense the PC to be
controlled doesn't need working sound card for that.

How to access safe mode in Windows and exit it with the NVDA screen reader

What is safe mode?
Safe mode is a troubleshooting option for Windows that starts your computer
in a limited state. Only the basic files and drivers necessary to run
Windows are started. Safe mode is useful for troubleshooting problems with
programs and drivers that might not start correctly or that might prevent
Windows from starting correctly.

To use NVDA in safe mode

You will need to install a registry patch first. This file can be found at
https://www.dropbox.com/s/jr72u3sk7p0za2r/Activate_Sound_in_Win10_Safe_Mode.zip?dl=0


After it has been installed it will allow you to use NVDA in safe mode. This
has been tested on a Windows 7 and Windows 10 machine and with quite a few
different sound cards.

Directions to go into and out of safe mode in Windows

You can reboot in to safe mode by doing the following:
Press Windows plus R and type msconfig and hit Enter
Press Ctrl plus Tab to get to the "boot tab"
Tab to "safe boot" and check the check mark/check box.
Tab to "base video" and check it as well.
Tab to the OK button and press it. You should get a prompt to restart the
computer to apply the changes.
If you select "restart now" your PC should restart into safe mode.

Please note: When the registry patch has been installed, when you go into
safe mode,  you will have sound and be able to use the NVDA screen reader.
Message you will get while in safe mode
To confirm you are in safe mode, you can use the NVDA key + letter B. Below
is the type of message you will get as an example on a Windows 10 machine.
Safe Mode Microsoft (R) Windows (R) (Build 16299.rs3_release.170928-1534)
Safe Mode



After finishing your PC job with safe mode, do the same steps above,
but this time uncheck the two check boxes above for both safe boot, and
base video;  and press OK and restart. Your PC will restart to the normal
mode.

I am not running windows 10, but will be getting a new computer for Xmas.  Since it looks like most of you are running Windows Defender, I am considering doing the same thing with my new computer.  One question, are you able to access the options and settings in windows 10 for Windows Defender?
That is one of the main problems I have with other virus and malware programs, so I was hoping it was accessible in Windows Defender.

I don't know what anti virus program you are using, but with
many--particularly McAfee and Symantec products, they give a lot of
false positives.  I remember when people running NVDA had all sorts of
problems with Symantec which kept eating up NVDA whenever it updated.

On the you tube web page, there's a couple of sliders for the player. 
the first one is for moving backward and forward through the file you
are watching, and the second one is the one for increasing and
decreasing the volume. When you land on these sliders, NVDA will go into
browse mode initially but you can tab through the controls until you
find the volume slider and adjust it to your liking. Hope this helps.

Funny you should bring this up. I found that some web pages even in espeak are switching languages for some texts and links when its not appropriate at all. Really irritating and cannot decide if its actually the browser or nvda or the web site.
It will go away in miy case if I turn all refs to automatic language switching off in the dialogues. If you have any  personal configs set up as a profile do not forget to check those too.

Hi,

Perhaps either the .chm or .html versions would be best because they are what we as blind users are most familiar with. If I had to choose one over the other though, the .chm file version was good for me for the longest time and it's more of a preference thing than anything else.  you get use to the .html version eventually.

Subject: [nvda] iPhone's Siri Male US English voice for use with NVDA?

I'm looking for the Siri Male iPhone voice (or its equivalent) on
Tiflotecnia's Vocalizer Voices page, to use especially for reading, with
NVDA, but it's not there. Might it be that's not been added yet? It'd be
a dream come true if I could have it. Thanks for info.

I have never been able to get WinHelp to work with screen readers. Having said that, WinHelp being a legacy format from the old XP days I have never actually tried using it with NVDA.
Again, PDF is another struggling point, at least for me. Converting into a plaintext or HTML format is possible, but it’s nice to be able to just open a document and read it straight away.
HTML help: I tend to prefer this option, though there are two options, packed as a .CHM (compiled HTML format) file, which seems to be the current Windows favourite, or as a single or multiple page folder or zip file etc. I personally had nothing against CHM’s until very recently, when some CHM’s I made refused to open the web pages on a friend’s machine, and when I switched to a 64-bit machine and all NVDA could say while navigating the contents tree was “Unknown, Unknown, Unknown”. Needless to say, that has unfortunately well and truly put me off CHM’s and has had me resorting to decompiling those into multiple page standard webpages and looking at the contents and index pages in source form. Again, not the best way to view help documentation in my opinion.
Obviously depending on machine, Windows version and, um, bitness? Screen reader version, confidence etc, different people will have different methods of dealing with these situations. But personally for me, the way I write help files now are as either a single document, or if it’s a big project, a folder with multiple HTML files, with the main file being called index which contains a table of contents.

My team hasn’t told me which help format we will be using for the online help. So, I thought I’d ask a little survey:



Which online help system do you prefer to use and a brief why, a.k.a. does one grant you more opportunities than another or is one more difficult with which to make a screen reader work?:

A) Win Help (chm): old-style windows help system with a content tree on the left, a large pane containing information filling the right and center areas, and a header across the top with forward, backward type buttons.

B) HTML Help: the design is similar to Win Help, but the whole thing runs in a web browser—whichever one is your default browswer.

C) PDF – Portable Document Format with proper tags.
