there is a lot of confusion when links are used
with 0 instead of 1. There are a lot of different knowledge and skill
levels when using the Internet. I see lots of confusion whenever people
send drop box links to e-mail lists of blind users with 0 used as the end
number. 1 should be used to avoid this confusion. I'm not discussing
what can be done to download if the number is 0. I'm discussing the result
of doing so.

Hi it is just as easy to find the link then use the applications key then if using mozilla fire fox arrow down to save link as then press the enter key. it will then give you the option to save it to where you want then save it to your pc. If internet exploder it will be save target as etc. That is the way i usually do it on all files it may depend if you press the enter key on it wheather it gives you the option to open or save as well. I just succeeded in converting a PDF file into CSV with the following steps: 1. Open the PDF file with Microsoft Word: Press the Application key and ignore the "Open with adobe" and go on down to "Open with " and press right-arrow and then down-arrow to "Word" and press Enter. 2. Let Word open and press "OK" on all announcements that appear. Then press control+Home to move to the top of the open document followed by control+shift+End to highlight everything. Then press control+c to copy all to the clipboard. 3. Open Excel. An empty worksheet should appear. Make sure you are in cell "A1". Then press control+v to paste the contents of the clipboard into the open worksheet. Make sure the file looks right to you at this stage just in case you need to correct anything. 4. Press the following sequence of keystrokes (one after the other): alt>f>a>o The traditional "Save As" dialog will appear. Change the type of file to "CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv)" and the job is done! Sorry if my instructions are too detailed. I don't know how familiar you are with keystroke control. I don't remember what happens if the download link
has a 0 at the end. A page comes up and there is some way to
download. But that isn't the main point. If you change the 0 to a 1,
following the link causes a download to begin without showing any page, as a
standard download link does. 1 should be used to avoid
confusion.

Re: turning up the volume in youtube
Gene
You don't have to work with these sliders and it's
easier and more efficient not to. From the top of the page, type the
letter b until you get to something like the pause button. That will mean
that you are in the player interface. Turn off browse mode with NVDA key
space.
use up and down arrow to raise and lower the
volume
. To jump forward or back in a playing track,
use right or left arrow.
Use main keyboard numbers 1 through nine to jump
from one percent of the file to various percents.
1 is ten percent. 2 is twenty percent,
etc. 0 starts play over from the start of the file and if the file has
finished, pressing 0 will start play at the beginning again. I haven't
tested to see if other numbers resume play, once over, from those
percents.

When you land on these sliders, NVDA will go into browse mode initially but you can tab through the controls until you find the volume slider and adjust it to your liking. Hope this helps. Re: Survey: Preferred Help Format
Damien Sykes <damien@...>
Hi,
I know how to use CHM. But it seems that the CHM viewer is deteriorating.
It’s not that we don’t know how to use it (granted there may be some who don’t),
but my friend can’t read content in CHM documents that I compile (the actual
HTML content is just showing a blank page for him on every item), and it seems
to be the 64-bit version of the viewer gives me a treeview of items that NVDA
reads as “unknown”. I find the index useful in large programming references and
such, but usually a table of contents suggests a recommended order to read
something in. And that’s fairly hard if all you have is a treeview with a bunch
of items that read as “unknown” and that can’t even differentiate whether an
item is opened, closed or on its own...I only ever had that problem since
switching to 64-bit Windows. On 32-bit, I could read CHM files with absolutely
no issues whatsoever.
Cheers.
Damien.

CHM not only has a contents treeview, it has a
search function and an index function as well. I run into a CHM help
system now and then and it is an advantage for blind people to know how to use
it.

disable object properties on braille display
Adriani Botez
Dear all,
does anyone know how to disable the object properties to be displayed on the braille display?
For example there is a link and on the braille display there appears lnk. I use the speech simoultanuously and I don’t need that information in braille as well. The same for example in outlook, when an e-mail has an attachment. I hear this information but I don’t want to read it on the display.
Thanks for suggestions.

Just a word of warning
Brian's Mail list account
I seem to be missing some posts to this list in my email, as I can see replies to some where the original is not there. Don't have time to go furtling about on the web site and it will probably get rectified soon so if anyone has asked me anything or I appear thick that either means I am thick or I did not see the original!

HTML however its done is far better, If the only difference is the way its stored we need hardly know about it. One thing to watch is not to provide an internal browser of the programs own making as these are notoriously inaccessible unless based on something like the old Mozilla code or IE. Brian bglists@... Having said that, WinHelp being a legacy format from the old XP days I have never actually tried using it with NVDA. Again, PDF is another struggling point, at least for me. Converting into a plaintext or HTML format is possible, but it’s nice to be able to just open a document and read it straight away. HTML help: I tend to prefer this option, though there are two options, packed as a .CHM (compiled HTML format) file, which seems to be the current Windows favourite, or as a single or multiple page folder or zip file etc. I personally had nothing against CHM’s until very recently, when some CHM’s I made refused to open the web pages on a friend’s machine, and when I switched to a 64-bit machine and all NVDA could say while navigating the contents tree was “Unknown, Unknown, Unknown”. Needless to say, that has unfortunately well and truly put me off CHM’s and has had me resorting to decompiling those into multiple page standard webpages and looking at the contents and index pages in source form. Again, not the best way to view help documentation in my opinion. Obviously depending on machine, Windows version and, um, bitness? Screen reader version, confidence etc, different people will have different methods of dealing with these situations. But personally for me, the way I write help files now are as either a single document, or if it’s a big project, a folder with multiple HTML files, with the main file being called index which contains a table of contents. So, I thought I’d ask a little survey: Which online help system do you prefer to use and a brief why, a.k.a. does one grant you more opportunities than another or is one more difficult with which to make a screen reader work?: A) Win Help (chm): old-style windows help system with a content tree on the left, a large pane containing information filling the right and center areas, and a header across the top with forward, backward type buttons. B) HTML Help: the design is similar to Win Help, but the whole thing runs in a web browser—whichever one is your default browswer. C) PDF – Portable Document Format with proper tags.
