Addon to solve Captcha?

George Zaynoun

Does such an addon to NVDA exists and if yes where to find and what browsers does it support?

Re: Screen Shade/curtain?

I think an addon to dim the screen would be nice. Does anyone know if an external program exists to dim the screen?

Does NVDA have a similar feature via an add-on or natively?

Recommendations of Win10 + NVDA Apps and Settings?

Kevin Chao

It's been  a while since i've used Win10 and  NVDA, so I wanted to tap the wisdom of this group.

In addition to setting the default browser, Cortona hotword/keyboard shortcuts, setting folder views to detailed view, adjusting for performance, etc.

For the best and most accessible experience with Win10 and NVDA, what are the  must get apps and must configure settings?
Thanks!!

Re: OT: selecting a new laptop is more difficult than before

This thread has been very relevant for me recently, as I was looking for a good business-grade Windows laptop. I tried the LeNovo ThinkPad via Amazon, but sent it back, and picked-up Dell XPS 9360 from Microsoft Store yesterday.

The 2 issues that I experienced are with the Realtek audio and media keys. Fortunately, it was possible to sort the former by turning off the sound effects/enhancements and have latter solved via BIOS set to use standard function keys.

I was unpleasantly surprised that these were issues on a vanilla Windows machine from Microsoft, but glad that it’s possible to set these normally.

This is my second XPS I had, first was in 2009, now again in 2017—very well built, great keyboard, light, fast.

Language community maintainer tutorial

Dear all,

What are your toughts about a kind of blog which shows how to create and maintain a language community? All existing maintainers could bring their input and we would create a sustainable platform. The topic would be very social oriented, for example inspirations for conducting surveys, provide user support through maillists, groups etc. It would be very important to have as many maintainers as possible who would show how they do it.

Its annoying as it is not apparently always the case, its as if there are

I'm not sure its the web site, more likely to be an issue in the way the
site is being handled I'd suggest.
Having said this, I've only encountered it twice and thought it was
something I had done, so never bothered to note the pages.
Might be worth going back to the set up you had before  when it worked, ie
browser nvda versions etc and see if it stops happening. at least then you
can narrow it down a bit. Brian

I know Mick is also taking a similar amount of leave and I'm not sure how much Reef is taking.  In any case, things will likely be quiet all round officially from us.

Golden Cursor add-on: December 15th snapshot posted

Hi all,

For members of NVDA users and add-ons lists: a copy of this message was sent to NVDA development list.

Golden Cursor add-on December 15th snapshot is now available for testing during this holiday season:

https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/goldenCursor.en.html

To test the development version, select development version link. For users, you won’t see noticeable differences except for the dialog where you can see list of saved mouse positions – it now includes the app name in its title. Also, the add-on title is now just Golden Cursor.

Technical: I’m basically rewriting major portions of the add-on to make it:

  • More pythonic.
  • Python 3 ready.
  • Remove dead code.
  • Remove unused dependencies.
  • A bit faster by optimizing the source code.

Currently, I’ve done:

  • Add-on name is now just “Golden Cursor”.
  • The saved positions list dialog now includes app name as part of its title.
  • Resolved file path error where the add-on won’t save positions database if the folder for storing it is gone somehow.
  • When trying to open saved positions for an app, the dialog won’t be initialized partially due to absence of positions database. From now on, this dialog won’t open if mouse positions for the app are not present at all.
  • Replaced mouse movement direction integers with global constants to make it more readable. Also, instead of these constants being 1-based, they are 0-based. This allows their transformation into enumerated type later.
  • Mouse restriction and pixel announcement are proper Boolean flags.
  • Mouse movement function is now named “moveMouse” instead of “move_mouse” to make it compliant with NVDA coding guidelines.
  • When trying to move the mouse, during mouse coordinate versus screen size comparison, chained comparisons are used instead of range function. The range function in Python 2 returns a list, not an iterator like what Python 3 version or xrange function does. This speeds up mouse movement routine significantly.
  • No more use of winsound or time modules. In case of winsound.MessageBeep, wx.Bell can be used, and things from time module isn’t used by the add-on at all.

As always, further pull requests should be done via GitHub. Comments and reviews are appreciated.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

When you are on the link, go into forms mode with NVDA key space.  Press enter on the link.  That will likely cause the link to function properly.  Once the new page has loaded, go into browse mode again with NVDA key space.  It's a toggle.

Re: The old NVDA won't start after an update problem again

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

No this is not. Indeed the log you saw was from the latest master snap but the latest stable does exactly the same. It was fine in 2017.3.
I think its the new code to replace lib files that cannot delete or rename files, while not actually causing a hard error gets slow in catching up and fails due to the delay.
Strange one. So far only two people have seen this, one is me, and both are on windows 7 machines with ssd drives, apart from that there seems to be nothing similar.
I can live with it, but its very strange indeed.

hello.
i think that this issuee is resolved in nvda 17.4
in which versions of nvda, did you have this problem?

On 12/14/17, Brian's Mail list account via Groups.Io
<bglists=blueyonder.co.uk@groups.io> wrote:
I am posting this here as I originally started an issue on Github about it
and wondered now if anyone else had seen the same thing.
Basically if you update nvda either portably or for an installed copy, be
it the release, release candidate or either snapshot branch, sometimes, but

not always, Nvda will not reboot automatically. It stops working, so you
cannot hear that an error box is on screen about nvda being unable to write

to the log file. It has however created a small log in the program files
folder wherever you had put it of course.
The problem in my mind is that it is not shutting down the old copy before

its starting the new one which of course results in the new copy trying to
rename the log file and start a new one, which it is unable to achieve hence

the problem.
I started to wonder what might cause this, and I think, looking at the log

of the temp copy doing the update its a problem with windows getting behind

processing file handling requests. Have a look at this update log. Those
of a disposition who hate watching paint dry should stop reading here!
