Ladies and gentlemen,

The next part in Welcome to NVDA 2018 tutorials set is now up on www.josephsl.net. This part concerns basic web browsing concepts and commands and completes the basics set in this series (and the first half of this set).

Changes from 2015:

• Completely redone with new examples and with use of Windows OneCore voices.
• Microsoft Edge (Windows 10 Version 1709) and Mozilla Firefox (version 58 beta) were used (see below for explanations). For the most part, Edge is used, but for some things, Firefox is better.
• Added a dedicated section on screen layout.
• Added an actual example of partially turning off browse mode (single letter navigation on/off) in web applications, specifically for embedded video player on YouTube website.
• Changes to first letter navigation sections, including reduced coverage for embedded objects (it was a dedicated section in 2015, but now one of the elements in 2018), long descriptions now part of graphics, and a comment on ability to move to read-only edit fields. Differences between web browsers and support for elements is also highlighted.
• Added coverage for the following elements and first letter commands: annotations (A), spelling errors (W). They won’t work on web browsers but will work while browse mode is engaged in Microsoft Word.
• Added a dedicated section on refreshing web content.
• Elements list has been expanded to cover new elements not only for web browsing (including the new form fields and buttons options), but also for Microsoft Word (comments and spelling errors) and Microsoft Excel (charts, formulas, cell comments and sheets). Element activation and movement examples are based on form fields.
• Examples of live regions are showcased.
• Added a segment on interacting with online math content (requires properly formatted MathML content and installation of MathPlayer from Design Science).

Again each topic is its own mp3 file. Combined, they run for over two hours, with the tour of first letter navigation commands taking 65 minutes to traverse (spread over two segments). Because of the length of this part, I didn’t have time to demonstrate reading PDF files in Microsoft Edge nor dealing with a more realistic web application (I wanted to use Google Docs for this but it didn’t work out in the end due to time and complexity involved).

A bit of explanation as to why I used two web browsers: I did it for three important reasons:

1. To highlight latest developments in web browsing and how far browsers have come.
2. To demonstrate the fact that different web browsers display the same website differently.
3. To showcase what works and doesn’t work for each browser, mostly to highlight strengths and current limitations with Microsoft Edge.

In the first place, the hotkey for the dropbox add on is NVDA + Alt + D and not F. Second, dropbox not found may just mean it's icon isn't showing in the system tray and you need to go to settings, personalization, then choose which icons appear in the system tray and make sure dropbox is turned on. This should fix it.

I have accidently done something to the number pad on my keyboard (desktop).
When I hit the / on the numb pad it turns off the numb lock. So, if I want
to type a date I type 1/ and then the numb lock is off and I can't type the
rest of the date without turning the numb lock back on. It was probably some
kind of accidental multiple key press on the numb pad as this is when it
started.

I currently have an add-on that does not work correctly in the latest version.
I needed to have the previous version. How can I get this version?
How can I get a GithUb Add-on's page?

Well I reported this on Dropbox36, and its now on version 40.xx. Unfortunately this is not the only problem. They seem to have changed a lot of their web site as well making it quite hard to navigate for unexplained reasons with nvda.
Maybe somebody with the knowledge might like to look at this. I have in the past found there tech help quite good, but they seem, increasingly not to understand where a blind user has issues, which is a little sad.

It solves two problems:

1. In browsers you can jump to paragraphs with the same horizontal offset.
For example, it can be useful to read first-level comments on web-pages that
present a hierarchical trees of comments, like reddit.
Now you can simply find the first comment and press NVDA+Alt+DownArrow to go
to the next first-level comment.

2. While editing source code in many programming languages, it allows you to
navigate by the indentation level. For example, you can move to
previous/next lines with the same indentation level by pressing
NVDA+Alt+Up or DownArrow. You can also jump to a parent line or to first
child.


Please let me know if anyone finds it useful, or if you have any
suggestions.

that they are useful, but that they belong in NVDA. I believe that it
is the responsibility of developers to label their graphics and
controls, draw and class their windows and controls properly, and
build keyboard/touchscreen support for their apps properly. This is
increasingly required by law, imposed by societal change, taught as
programming best practice, and demonstrably beneficial beyond the
needs of disability communities. Unfortunately, it's not all there
yet, but within the next three years, it will become legally and
socially inacceptable to build software without regard for
accessibility standards, just as you wouldn't build out with no regard
for UI, performance, security, and other common standards and best
practices. I believe the development philosophy of NVDA is based on
this. A screen reader should read the screen, conveying the
information already provided in accessible format, doing as little
interpretation as possible.
